But today I…read morewalked into the store and was met by an older woman with a short blonde bob of sorts and a white sweater at the front desk- she immediately looked me up and down with a look of disdain, asking if I needed help with anything- making it evident she did not think I belonged there. She proceeded to follow me around the store for the entire duration of my visit, swooping in and telling me to "not touch" anytime I attempted to look at something. Mind you- she did not treat any of the other patrons in this fashion. She made the environment so hostile that I ended up just leaving and not buying anything. I can't say I'll be back- the treatment by this woman genuinely made me so uncomfortable.

The building itself is like a bizzaro museum. It is breathtaking. Seriously, this place is so freaking cool. There are three stories of eclectic architecture cobbled together from a couple of OLD buildings in Durham. It feels like you're in an old money crazy person's Victorian era fantasy world somewhere in Europe. There is a conservatory in the center of it all, with a tropical palm that towers the full three stories above a perfect little pond. I'm CERTAIN there are hidden passageways and secret doors in this place that undoubtedly lead to mysterious chambers where all manner of twisted and delightful treasures were once stored and insane rituals took place. This is the closest I've come to my dream house in real life. The antiques themselves are very high-end 200 year old Victorian stuff. There are $20,000 sideboards mixed in with $2,000 lamps. A lot of the stuff has obviously had damage restored, which seems reasonable considering the age, and the fact it is a hidden antique shop in Chapel Hill. Check this place out. Today, finally while driving past u saw that the open sign was on so I decided to make a quick stop and check it out. While I had a sort of strange and short experience I'll start with what I saw. Full of trinkets and a variety of items, it seems like a fantastic little spot to explore. The interior was not large, a small little shop likely food for a handful of people at a time, packed with things ranging from fun dishes, records, clothing, and random knickknacks. There was a little library outside along with larger pieces like statues and even some art pieces inside. Now I would love to go back and properly explore, get a better gauge of the pricing as well, but the reason I said "seems" earlier is that when I arrived, the lights were on, open sign was on, door was open. I walked in and there was some radio playing. But not a single person in sight, mind you it's a small space. I said "hello" a few times, stood there in plain view in case anybody walked out (last thing I wanted was to spook somebody on accident being behind a shelf or anything), and heard no response. I stood there a couple minutes, just looking around, but was a tad uncomfortable, not due to the place just the situation, and thus decided to leave and come back another time to more properly explore this space that seemed like a blend of an antique store and a child's playhouse. Although exploration is probably a good enough reason to visit a store like this, I found myself here while a few of the artists with works displayed were having a conversation about their work, the setup and displays. That was a pretty eye-opening experience: they're just like everyone else. Who'd have thought? For the detail and work involved in some of this work, the prices were consistent with the area. It's about a 40 minute drive from downtown Raleigh NC without traffic, but only 25 minutes from Chapel Hill or downtown Apex, NC. Any direction you drive to Pittsboro from you cross beautiful country side, forests, hills and rivers, and coming from the East, (Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, Fuquay Varina), you're in real luck, you get to cross over Jordan Lake twice. Pittsboro retains its small town USA feel, and the Joyful Jewel is just across the street from the historic Chatham County Courthouse which houses a historical museum open 2 - 3 times a week. But the Joyful Jewel is open 7 days a week. I have visited hundreds of times over the 12 years I have been living in central North Carolina because I so enjoy walking about the store, as if it were a museum, and taking in the colors, imagination, creativity and inspiration. Artists take turns in the store, so you get to meet an artist whose work is there. Mariah Wheeler is the owner, with her husband DG Chandler. Both are jewelers, but work in other forms as well. The affordability of art and fine crafts is one of the best discoveries for me, making a visit to the Joyful Jewel even better than a museum, since I may be able to take home the piece of art that really speaks to me. And if you're looking to learn more about local artists, Mariah is very well connected, not only to artist who paint, and potters, and glass artists, but also local writers, poets and musicians.
