The War Memorial is in a small space between buildings called Veterans Mall just off Main Street near Bank Row. The Vietnam Veterans War Memorial is a polished black granite memorial which lists those who served during the war and those who The memorial reads, "This story shall the good man teach his son, from this day to the ending of the world. But we in it shall be remembered. We few, we harry few, we band of brothers for he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother. In grateful appreciation to all those who served worldwide during the Vietnam era." And it lists those who were killed in action and died in service with their military branch and an outline map of the Vietnam peninsula. The civil war memorial, "In honor of the men who enlisted from the Town of Greenfield Massachusetts to serve their country in the War for the Union 1861-1865." "Dedicated by citizens of Greenfield in Grateful Memory of those who served Town and Nation in Korean War. Those honored dead gave their lives." And finally, a very large World War II memorial. The covered bridge was built in 1972 to replace the 100-year-old covered bridge that had been destroyed by a fire set by vandals three years before on Halloween night in 1969. It is a single lane bridge and my Sprinter van would not fit. I parked illegally nearby, walked the bridge. Locals say that the bridge is haunted. I was here during the late afternoon hours when it was still light. I stood quietly on the bridge and listened. No ghosts appeared. One day while exploring Western MA, we drove through Conway and came upon this bridge spanning over…read morethe Deerfield River. This historic truss bridge built in 1882 is such a unique structure and the views from the bridge are incredible. For the past few summers we have made it a point to stop by this bridge to not only marvel in the views, but to swim under the bridge. On either end there are parking lots, and often the water is moving slow enough that swimming here is a blast. Last Fourth of July we parked one of our cars here and ended up tubing down the river. This was a great place to start and parking was great because it was off the road. In the end, we love traveling to this bridge especially when it is snowing. One of our other favorite parts of this area is that the train passes by the bridge and listening to it pass as you are spending the day swimming here is relaxing.

While historic, the building is cramped due to population growth over the past century, and the plexiglass barriers also make it feel closed in. There is ample free parking at the strip mall across the street. The buttons for the crosswalks are out of order, but cars stopped for me. There's plenty of room to park off to the side and the bridge has walkways on either side that span the length of the bridge. There are also pathways that take you down to the riverbank for more views! The river is incredibly beautiful, especially with the fall foliage - just wow! I could've quite happily stayed here all day! It's very easy to find - just plug the name into google maps and it will get you here (Apple Maps didn't work for me though).

This bridge located in Winchester is huge and also has some really unique features. My favorite was that both sides of the bridge had covered areas to walk, which you don't see in some of the smaller covered bridges. Overall, it's a unique little landmark hidden in the middle of nowhere and if you are a little bit of a nerd like me you'll probably enjoy it.

When in Worcester, this is one of those 'Roadside America' type stops you can make. Bancroft Tower…read morea giant 'folly' built to look like a castle. Located at the top of a steep hill, in a neighborhood, it's a pretty impressive site. There was snow on the ground when we visited and the pathways are not shoveled so if you go in winter, wear appropriate footwear. I'm not sure when the gates are unlocked to climb to the top, but there is a staircase and I bet the views from the top are stunning. A small parking area is across the street from the structure. A small sign limits parking to one hour and there is one trash can should you need it. There is also a sign that appears to be at a trailhead but with all the snow it's hard to tell. One word of caution: when we arrived there was one car in the parking area with two persons inside. When we got out of our car they got out of theirs. We walked toward the folly. They walked toward our vehicle. I took photos, but remained near the parking lot because suede shoes and snow do not make a good combination. After taking my photos, I turned around, they were just standing next to my car. As I stared at them, they turned and looked over the edge of the lot down the hill. I walked down the road a piece to get a different angle of the structure and always had my vehicle in view. They eventually got back in their car and drove away without visiting the folly or really even looking at it. After they left I walked over to see if there was anything they could actually be looking at down the hill and no, it was someone's home and a wooded hillside. Nothing there to attract attention. Just a situational awareness 'head up' to visitors. Otherwise, the folly really is lovely and it was decorated for the holidays too. It was a quick visit overall and we were on to the next stop. In summer it might make a good spot to family photos and perhaps a picnic if you bring a blanket to sit on.

The Glacial Potholes in Shelburne Falls, MA have been around since the last Ice Age, which is wild to think about. As the glaciers melted and pulled back, fast moving water and swirling stones basically acted like nature's power tools to carve out around fifty smooth, round potholes in the rock. Now they just sit there staring at you, looking like something left behind by an ancient race of aliens. You can see them by walking along a platform that gives you a great view of the holes, pools of water, and a waterfall. What an awesome example of natural beauty.

Kennedy memorial plaza was funded by the parishioners of the Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Holyoke and the memorial is located on front of the church. The memorial consists of a granite base and a bust of a youthful Kennedy. There are granite slabs flanking the memorial with quotes from his inaugural address and book "Profiles in Courage". Behind the memorial are granite blocks engraved with the names of recipients of the JFK award and the Grand Marshals of the St. Patrick's Day parade.
