Freud Bar has a cool subterranean, urban vibe and has acquired itself a following of loyal drinkers. The cocktails are good in a distinctly disco way. When I was handed close to a pint of yellowy sweet cocktail I quickly decided that I too liked Freud Bar. Getting a seat is a trial, but if you are quick on your feet it is possible to snaffle one as someone gets up. I have this problem where I spend far, far too much money when I really like a bar. Needless to say, in this bar I spent far, far too much money. Despite being on a main road it's difficult to spot this place because it's not on street level and there's no sound of the bar from the street either. It's below an antique shop, or something, and you have to practically abseil down the steep steps to get to it. The girls I was with were wearing high heels and I'm sure I glimpsed one of them crossing their heart before attempting the decent. Inside is small and kooky and you can tell most of the people in there are regulars because of how comfortable they are to share tables with strangers, perch on steps or sit on the floor. I got the impression that many of the people in there felt like it was 'their' place but still felt welcome to join them. It wasn't like a 'locals only' kinda thing. My only, very slight and niggly, criticism of this place is that it was too bright. The atmosphere was great, but could have been helped along a little by dimming those lights to ease the pressure on drunken eyes. Nice bar, went during a rainy night last week. When a friend and myself finally made it, I could see a sigh of disappointment from my friend because he had thought the place was closed judging by the street level store above the bar. It was my first time, but reading the reviews on Yelp, I saw a staircase and began walking down. He soon followed, and was relieved to get out of the rain. The bar area was funky, urban hipster types, the art crowd, and maybe a couple anarchist lurking about in the corner. What I liked was the chill vibe, the extensive cocktail menu, and the mojitos. We chose to sit up the stairs by the piano, on a couple stools. It was a great spot to chat and catch up with an old friend that I hadn't seen in ages. Pretty good cocktails made with fresh ingredients for a reasonable price (£7-9). We came on a Thursday at 630 and got a table. We left at 8 and it was filling up but not obnoxiously crowded. The vibe was decidedly art-hipster, by way of music, staff and photography exhibit currently on display, but crowd was normal Central London post-work friends and a few dating couples. Down a dingy stairwell, to a crowded underground dungeon is where you'll find Freud. I love the extensive cocktail list, the inventive bartenders, and best of all, the prices for such a central place! This is one of the first places I took my now-husband when we started dating and despite me drunkenly spilling my chocolate-something in a martini glass on him, we're still together - such is the power of a good cocktail ;) It's the kind of place that makes you feel like you know about some cool bar that others haven't heard of, even though it's clearly a popular spot. First time i stumbled upon Freud's was when a friend dragged me down the basement stairs of some antique shop. I wondered what she was up to but was impressed with the tiny bar which was absolutely heaving with people. Firstly, the place is so 1960's Parisian, i wanted a beret and Gauloise cigarettes whilst Nouvelle Vogue played on. It's got great character and atmosphere and attracts a really friendly crowd. Then there is the bar itself which serves amazing cocktails, perfectly mixed by the skilled staff. Their Long Island is amazing, as are their mojito's Mmm, just writing this makes me want to go there now and just chill. It's a brilliant place to take friends and visitors to London but get there early as it really does fill up and it can only seat so many. read more

So last night me and 5 companions hopped into a taxi and said "Take us to Freud Bar" to which our drive obliged. We walked down those stairs and stepped into a hipper, more laid back world than the one we just left. Themed as some kind of post apocalyptic basement, with a rude bar tender and hard of hearing floor staff. The mojito I ordered was basically fine, nothing to write home about, but amongst the smallest I've probably ever had from any bar anywhere. Not a fan. Well i think everything has been said, Freud bar is definately offers some of the finest cocktails in London! the interior is great too, well of what is there really, the intitre place has a really nice urban feeling with its grey industrial walls and no windows. The cocktails are great all of them are around 6 pounds 6,50 so thats good too, and they are extraordinary delicious!! Medium sized underground concrete bar with an impressively large cocktail menu, but with great value prices that will keep you coming back again and again! Fairly busy, but the staff work quickly and are happy to serve. Cocktails vary in price from £6.50 - £8, so are on par with happy hours at local places. With over 40 items on the menu, we were almost stuck for choice! Definitely a go to in the area, especially if it's past Happy Hour times at other places (after 8 or so) Only other point to make, as another reviewer has said - the toilets were pretty gross on our visit unfortunately! read more

I used to frequent this place as it was down the road from the bar i used to work at as a student. I stumbled across it again a little while ago and was reminded why i enjoyed drinking there so much. Good cocktails here and they have a varied selection. I don't like cocktails with the fake syrup/ have-a-sip-of-me-and-i'll-put-you-into-a-sugar-coma taste to them - They do a great Old Fashioned (which does take about 20minutes to make but is enjoyable as the staff are pretty chatty) The atmosphere is what you would call understated as is the decor, but worth going in for a drink if you're heading to theater. Why 3 stars? Its underground so it's dark and bathrooms are a little - er - basic and dingy, and it becomes a heaving pit of bodies during the weekends. I love this place, not so much a hidden bar as a bar that just happens to be in a basement, hard to miss to be honest. Amazing selection of cocktails and very reasonable prices for central London. I'd attempt to recommend some but each one I've tried is unique and great in it's own way. Go with an open mind to trying something you may not usually go for, you'll be surprised. Inside is quiet small but there is a section at the back to kinda perch yourself on if there's no seats left. Crowd generally very chilled and relaxed, probably quite a few regulars which is a vibe I appreciate. Bar staff are great, knowledgeable and don't mess about, you won't be standing there for 15 minutes being ignored like so many dreadfully staffed bars in this city. Perfect place for a date or with a small group of mates, not sure if they take table bookings but worth inquiring as it gets busy early. Just go, you won't be disappointed. read more

I've usually stuck to their house wine here, but I've heard great things about the cocktails from friends. The ambiance is fantastic as a super-trendy, Manhattan-esque basement bar, and the bartenders are super friendly. The cons: it's pretty tiny so if you don't arrive early, it's a battle to find a seat and everyone's packed in, but it's not a deal-killer. I'm so thankful to my friend for taking me here. Freud is awesome! I only came here a couple of times but it was the perfect stop for a casual, reasonably-priced cocktail with friends. It can get VERY crowded at night, and I wouldn't call it a warm, cozy place, but the drinks are worth it. Bit of a sleeping giant, Freuds. Alex James made it his own before he went all girly and concentrated more on cheese than getting smashed up in Soho. Nowadays it's probably more filled with foreign students than rock stars, but that's no bad thing if you're out on the prowl. It's got a good simple vibe, basement job, no David Collins interiors here. It's very chilled, great value cocktails and the bartenders are as friendly as you can be with multiple piercings. read more

You get what you pay for - what you pay for is a top quality cocktail poured freestyle. None of this British law regulation crap. I will gladly pay £7 for a strong Long Island with lots of love. Recently went to Freud for a date, really cool industrial vibes basement bar. The list of cocktails is huge and really good value for London. I had a Long Island and a Moscow Mule, both very tasty. The bartenders were very knowledgeable and was fascinating to watch them do about 5 orders at once without skipping a beat. The music was good, but because of the acoustics of the basement mixed with a lot of voices it was a bit loud and hard to have a conversation across the table. The only real negative of the night was that the women's bathroom was completely flooded with toilet water and was to be honest, pretty gross. This low rating is on the quality of the drinks (the liquor and the preparation) only. If you are looking for that 'awesome mixologist' like I am, do not come here. It's not a bad place, it's just not a true cocktail bar. Cuervo gold anyone? If you are a cocktail snob you would likely walk out (I wish I did). The drink makers are no more experienced at making cocktails than a Starbucks barista is at making true espresso. I am speaking of course from one experience... But that was observing three (the only ones) behind the bar. All the same, so expect that is how it is. The drinks are made with as I like to say 'the cheap stuff'. Anyhoo... On a lighter note the atmosphere is simply amazing. They were friendly. The vibe was like a VERY COOL coffee shop. And the drinks are cheap (like their ingredients). It almost seems like a perfect discovery, except for all of its apparent discreetness, Freud's is clearly not a place for confidential revelations. There are too many people here, and frankly, in winter its just too cold. And the décor, contrary to some reviews here fails on account of pretentions and not because it actually manages grubby very well. A cute little cafe/bar tucked away below the footsteps of the bustling Shaftsbury ave tourists.. freud bar happened to be just what we were looking for, a quiet little place to stop and grab a drink. It's one of those moments where you think, thank god the tourists aren't all here... but I'm sure on a weekend it'll fill up quick. The cocktail menu was abundant, the music was fun, the decor is simple, and the men's bathroom is outside...... it's all just typically british. A very cool alternative to your usual west end cocktail joint. This place is essentially an industrial cellar with funky art on the walls and one hell of a barman. He had that special knack for having 5 different orders on the go at any one time, so even though there was quite a wait at the bar I still felt looked after. Two of my mates went for The Aztec which was a little too intense for me (who thought putting tequila and tabasco in the same glass was a good idea?!). One of them loved it but I think the other was jealous of my gin and elderflower based concoction. The list is extensive and cutely chalked up behind the bar, with drinks reasonably priced for the area. We got lucky and scored a table as others left, but otherwise there isn't that much seating. Plenty of concrete and hard edges decor-wise too so it's not really a place to get comfy for a whole evening. But with the fun vibe and 'in-the-know' factor, the 3 single guys I was with all agreed they'd prob use it as a date place. I reckon make it your after-dinner drinks stop to make eyes at each other before heading home ;) I loved it - just be sure to mind your step on the twisty staircase leading down from the street. It's 9 am and I'm sitting in a MacDonald's faux red leather chair admiring my Cornetto McFlurry ( which will contribute to 70% of my allowable sugar intake for the day) it's time to reminisce about my year in London. Freud was my first..bar in London. People may say it's cramped and small, I'd like to say it's more intimate...where I had a chance to meet my friend from the US and see her off. First impressions are everything and our meeting could have been dramatically different. Instead the people, music, the drinks and the inaudible but not distracting crowd chatter contributed to a great end to my friend's time in London and the start of my journey through this wonderful city. Some bars have this inexplicable "It" factor and Freud is definitely one. I'm all for poetic endings so I might fancy another drink here before I am one of the UK's departed. Thanks Freud. read more

We were finding this place pretty cool until it came to pay. The waiter had wandered out with the trash and we ended up stood about like lemons, in everyone's way. Took awkward ages! The Pimlico cocktail I had was quite tasty though and there is a nice laid back feel to the bar, which regularly shows art for your perusal. Freud Ltd is all about the future. Regular objects like the espresso maker become works of art as the entire concept of what an espresso maker should be is deconstructed and rebuilt. The result is slick designs in stainless steel, glass and ceramics whose lines have got them parts in the last James Bond film. The packaging too, is equally as sleek and absolutely anything in here would make an stunning present because the pieces are so timeless. It really isn't all that expensive either. I can't quite make my mind up about this bar. It's so close to my office I should be there far more often then I am. Despite the amazing cocktails, I find the actual physical experience of being in this bar quite unrelaxing. Compared to the London cocktail club just over the road in Grape street, there is barely any seating here, and you are constantly getting knocked by people trying to move past you, even if you're seated! It definitely has a hipster/'too cool for school' vibe which I normally soak right up, but to be honest I wouldn't go out of my way to arrange drinks here with friends or colleagues as better, more cosy and laidback bars exist close by. read more

I can't agree that Freuds is one of London's best kept secrets as every time I've been there in the evening it's been jampacked with hipsters. This is a very cool bar with an excellent cocktail list, however they start at £5 and I've never been there when there's been any happy hour deals or anything, so it's pretty expensive getting a round in. The cocktails are wonderful though and the staff old hands with the shakers. Due to it being quite a snug basement bar there can be quite a wait to get drinks as it gets full very easily. Fun place, and interestingly set up - with walls that make you think you might be sitting in a cave. Nice bar with some decent bar staff struggling to plough through the numerous cocktails they have on order at any moment, owing to the bar being pretty rammed most evenings. When you enter the Freud bar you immediately feel good. The music is soo good there, cocktail are quite expensive but tasteful and people very open minded! One of those rare secret hide-outs in the middle of town, Freud is a truly excellent place to enjoy a cocktail or two (probably no more than that if you don't want to be bankrupt and in pain by the next morning!) Cocktails here are tasty, inventive and pretty strong, so a little goes a long way. The underground bar doubles up as a gallery, and you can usually buy the art should the whim so take you. A friend of mine purchased a painting on one memorable trip here, which certainly added something to an average night on the town. One warning: go early. A real find - fine cocktails, my kinda decor and a real nice atmosphere. Teeter down the iron staircase and duck into concrete heaven, punctuated with a bar and some seating; colour accents are provided by an array of glittering cocktails and the shiny happy - often trendy - people who populate Freuds. The miniature size of this place gives the impression of an uber busy bar, but we got served pretty quickly and certainly efficiently, and were presented with a couple of sterling cocktails. Tip for spring/summer drinking: a Moscow Mule, which tastes suitably sun drenched and retro in equal measure. Ask for olives, they're tasty and will helpfully bump up your bar bill so you can stick it on the plastic. Freuds is the kind of bar you tell your friends about (or Qype-type, or both) and it shows, as finding a seat on a Thursday was a bit of a struggle. It's refreshing to find somewhere where post-work drinking is a pleasure, not a trial. Repeat visits highly recommended. read more

One of London's worst-kept secrets. Everybody seems to know about Frued's these days, but it still manages to keep out the riff-raff without being too pretentious. A gloriously artsy basement cafe, Freud's transports you to 60s beatnic Paris, complete with the odd Serge Gainsbourg-alike holding court round a wobbly table. A huge chalkboard behind the bar lists miriad cocktails mixed to perfection by business-like bar staff. Tuaca-based tipples come highly recommended and will aid your ascent into the night via the notoriously difficult to negotiate wrought-iron stairs. read more

K...I braved this place again after a year of staying away due to shear fear, they have extremely steep stairs and my high heels had a fight with those mesh stairs and on that occasion the stairs won. A year on and near full momentum back in my arm I tried this place again. If I had to sum this place up i would say reasonable (not perfect) cocktails at a v reasonable price (£7 per drink just as good if not better than the posh £11 per drink places). The crowd seems a bit student(ish), lots of different languages, all a bit fun and not at all posh - not sure you will find a pretentious bone in anyones body and for this alone along with the non pretentious mixologists behind the bar guys it's worth a visit (or 2) I would sum the style as run-down fun, its definitley not a dress up place, but no one would say anything if you did. Great little basement bar, hidden away and found via a frankly rather perilous metal staircase. I'm a huge fan of this cave-like bar but do wonder how much I can claim to be as, I have to admit, I've never actually tried the cocktails. The wine is great though! And the surroundings are excellent so there you go. Just get there early as seats are at a premium. (One note - be wary of their card charges....I was once in there from 5-7 and, oddly, they started charging me for an under-£10 card charge after 6pm....hmmm.) read more

For Cocktails there is no better in place in London. I absolutely love this place and now being away from London I miss it. It is very hip and alternative little bar that at first is the kind of place you would walk straight past. It is however extremely popular and therefore it is hard to find a seat and takes a long time to get a drink so when you do order get a load of drinks in. Don't be surprised if you go in with a full wallet and come out with an empty one though as the cocktails don't come cheap. read more

Don't tell too many people about this place because it's so easy to overlook, not very big and generally has a pretty great crowd inside. It's not the best looking bar with exposed concrete walls, and fairly unappealing toilets, but it's the grungy side that many people like so much. They have some decently priced cocktails, not the largest serves but great to share with some friends. The rest of their prices are reasonable as well, though from memory all they have is bottled beer. I'm surprised more people can't find it since it's just on the edge of Covent Garden, but understandable since you need to walk down some stairs. read more
