There are exposed brick walls and some other characteristics you expect to find in these old buildings. It's next to a bar. The students are all friendly and many of them are interesting characters with crazy patches or mismatched neon color rash guards. One guy had a patch on his gi of Johnny Cash flipping the bird, which is the best possible patch if you ask me. I'm surprised there isn't a bar in the back of the gym or a brass band playing while we spar. Professor Matthias is an excellent teacher. I'd also imagine he'd be a great coach ringside as he is always very good at identifying opportunities for attack when we spar. He's also a really down to earth guy with some good stories. I wish I had the time to do bjj seriously again. It's frustrating to know that your skills are devolving while the bjj game keeps changing and evolving, but I guess that's just what happens when you get old. If I did have the time and inclination I would be proud to be a member here. You should check it out.

Being a girl, I have experienced some not so friendly training partners who have a thing about rolling with girls. This was not the case here. Everyone there was super nice, and I was glad to see another girl in the class! The instructor was super technical and thorough. He went over the technique in detail and then gave us plenty of drill time. After technique, he reviewed what he covered before it was time to roll. After a few rounds, he summarized the technique again, which I thought was awesome; repetition really helps new technique stick! What I loved the most was that before he dismissed class, he went around and asked everyone if they had any questions. He answered everyone's questions with patience, and did not rush, although it seemed another class was getting ready to start using the mats. Overall, I had a great time here and I will definitely check them out again whenever I go back and visit.

For the record, I'm from Houston and was visiting NOLA for a week. Additionally, I'm in my mid-40s, not as fit and trim as I once was, and wanted to take private lessons with someone who had years of experience. I've had some prior boxing experience, but had been 10+ years. I decided to train with Matt ('The Coach') because I wanted to focus on boxing technique, endurance and strength; Again, I made the best choice. Matt is one of the most intuitive people I've trained with. In about 5 to 10 minutes he knew everything from my personality to my taste in music. He has such a good sense/read of the person he is training, and of what they're capable, and oh man does he push you without using what I call shame tactics. These are the qualities to look for in a trainer because he will customize based off of your strengths and weaknesses. I trained with Matt for three days only, and while the warm-up was the same, everything the last 50-minutes was a surprise. Training with him makes one realize why boxing is called the "sweet science"; plus he's super smart, and a good conversationalist. The gym itself is pretty raw, meaning no A/C; however, it has everything you need to box (different types of bags, ring, etc.) and to train in boxing (weighted gloves, dumbbells, etc.). My recommendation is just go and train, with either Matt or Fred. I met Fred, the boxer, who looks intimidating, but is a friendly and approachable guy. I've already told a couple of friends who live in NOLA about my experience, and I plan on training here again when I return in October. This is an amazing opportunity (and price) for the training and experience they offer.

I decided to check out their facility after my first obstacle course race, Battle of Baton Rouge. I was unable to complete their last obstacle in the race. It was a rig. I wanted to come back and conquer every obstacle for their next race. Since joining Nola Muscle Park, I've finished every obstacle in the past two Battle races. Plus, I competed in UNAA, Ultimate Ninja Athlete Association. I advanced to regionals. I could not have improved so much without their coaching. They are great. She gave everyone a discount code to try a class free at their studio so I thought I'd give their studio a try. I made an account online and scheduling/ checking out was super easy. They do have a 2hr cancellation policy, after which they will charge you. Price wise, Barre Code is more affordable than its competitors, Barre3 and PureBarre. They have a new member package that is $89 for a month of unlimited classes which I think is superb and you can try a class for free using a discount code. Parking was tough on Harrison and the studio itself is on the second floor so it was a little hard to find. Once inside, the studio was immaculate, clean, and welcoming. The receptionist was very nice and helped me check in. They have spacious bathrooms, a childcare area, lockers, a changing room (which doubles as a mother's room!), and even a nice vanity for freshening up. Towel rental and bottles of water are available for purchase for $1. Kelley was there greeting students and even remembered meeting me. The class itself was great- high energy, challenging, and I'm confident that I will see results. There were around 10 people in my class and my instructor, Marissa, was very down to earth, encouraging, and attentive. There are 3 levels of class difficulty- Barre Code, TBC (total body conditioning), and HIIT. There are also 2 classes on the weekends - HIIT and Barre restore that focus on stretching and recovery.

Cleanliness is always a priority at this gym and it shows. They open pretty late on the weekends at 8am but otherwise the hours are late enough to accomodate most needs. The staff are all friendly and welcoming. I would recommend this gym to anyone looking for a good full-service gym.
