One of the places I head to when I want to get away from it all is the Vienna Peace Pagoda -…read moreperfectly situated on the Danube. This is a pleasant bike ride or there's a special walking shortcut through the woods of the eastern Prater that takes you by a very old and isolated cemetery as well as a small Viennese farming community. I can't describe how to find this cool shortcut (you just have to know it) ... so prob it's best to go there by bike as I mostly do as well. The Vienna Peace Pagoda is the first one built in continental Europe dating from 1983. London followed a couple of years later with one on the south bank of the River Thames in Battersea. The Peace Pagoda movement began with Buddhist Michidatsu Fujii monks in Japan after the horrors of the second world war and has now spread all around the planet. Thanks to Vienna, Europe was one of the earliest continents to take part in the movement. Now to be honest if you are knowledgeable about Buddhism, this is not actually a pagoda but a stupa which are built as physical expressions of the Dharma. Most stupas are bell-shaped. The Vienna one contains a 3 metre statue of the Buddha. There are almost never many people here so it is a perfect place to feel away from some of the stress in life. This spot on the River Danube lives up to the concept of "Peace" inherent in its name. You can relax on a bench here and watch the flowing waters drift by. Hey and before you head back to civilization on your bicycle or hike on the shortcut through the Prater, you can grab some food and/or wine at nearby Lindmayer's. After all, the Lindmayer family did donate the land for the impressive Vienna Peace Pagoda.
