My 1st impression of the shop was that it is quite small and as such I didn't really expect there to be to look at, but as soon as I walked in the door I realised I couldn't be more wrong, the shop is on 2 floors and is 1 of the biggest model/hobby shops I've ever been in and it is not a big name like model zone but the shop is bigger than any of there shops I've been in. As for what they sell there should definitely be something for every one as not only do they sell model railways but model kits, die cast cars and bikes, R.C. cars and boats etc, scalextric and even dolls houses as built or in kit form as well as plans to build them from scratch! Being interested in model railways that was the area of the shop I mainly looked at and that took up probably about 1 3rd of the upper floor so there was quite a selection although there 2nd hand section could be better but then again thats is probably down to how much stuff people sell to them and when. I went with my father and we had a good look round at everything they sell just to see what exactly they have and there website doesn't really show everything that they have so it is definitely worth paying a visit as you are bound to find something of interest even if you aren't into any of the hobbies there's a good chance you will find something interesting.

The Technical man in there, Joe, is extremely helpful, an absolute goldmine of knowledge and always willing to chat and help on just about any aspect of model rail. Being only a small town I am sure that many make use of this handy stationers. It's always nicer to go indie than big chain, and there is a Cartridge World about 10 minutes or so away, but I would choose Lidgett Hill every time. Why? The extra mile an indie store will always go to for their customers, there's always the personal touch! It's got all the usual things that you would hope for in a stationers, hoards of pens and such, papers of all varieties, folders and office supplies - no stone unturned they've pretty much covered everything. However, as you'll notice by their notices, they do offer more than the things you might expect as well! Given our recent bout of snow, which did seem relentless, they have compiled a special collection of 'snow day activities' for the children stuck at home during the impossible snow days! I realise that it's a bit of cheeky marketing, but it was pretty cute and innovative! Essentially, these kits were made up of colouring books, crayons, puzzles and so on. Still, better than the idiot box, right? All in all, it's a ok with me!

This place was a bit of a mixed bag. There are 2 aisles to the shop, (the divider dedicated to dated greetings cards), On the left, there is everything you'd expect from a stationers: pens, pencils, pads of paper, folders and display folders, pencil cases selotape etc. On the right of the counter , tucked in the corner is acryllics, sketch pads and paintbrushes. I have to be honest, and say that I thought their arts materials were pretty overpriced. The quality of the paint was a mid-range brand, but I felt they were asking for much more than it is worth, and indeed is priced in competing city centre shops and also student unions. They do have an interesting supply of goods though. They sell many different childrens colouring books, party bags, stamps, stickers of all sorts, and card making kits, but I did get a niggling feeling that perhaps the local community was not making the most of its stationers, but instead, opting for cheaper well-known establishments.

On the top floor you will find DVDs, games and CDs. The till here is usually quiet and the shop generally empty. Downstairs it is a whole different story. On the ground floor you will find stationery, office supplies and their vast selection of books. There is two sets of tills downstairs and the ones at the front of the store are exceptionally busy, often queueing into the book aisles. The staff are friendly and helpful but the store is somewhat disorganised, for instance they have shelves of books behind the smaller till, hard for a customer to reach. Their book prices are reasonable but I think a lot of their stationery and office supplies are expensive.

They have a special till for where you can order books and collect them when they are in. The staff are lovely and friendly and will help you find whatever you are looking for.The store is vast and very clean and tidy, it does get a bit jumbled after people have read through stuff and just put them back anyway but usually it is tidy and well stocked. They also have a small stock of pop and confectionary.

If this is your sort of thing though, Model Zone is a good compromise between cheap, knock-off memorabilia and the full-on, second-mortgage-requiring stuff you get in comic shops, with the added bonus of having loads of model making stuff thrown in. If you're not old enough to have yet rediscovered how cool things like train sets and Scalextric actually were, then this isn't the place for you - it's strictly dads and the old-at-heart only in here.

Man this shop is pokey!…read more Big Deal sell a good deal of stuff for such a small space, that is for sure. Their goods range mostly in music items and electrical goods, most especially amplifiers and guitars although there are a number of other items on sale here too. As a lot of the items have been part exchanged/are second hand it means they offer reasonably competetive prices on their goods. The main issue with this, though, is that when searching for musical items money isn't (and shouldn't be) the main factor. I'm not saying one should go crazy, but it doesn't matter how cheap their Takemine might be, that doesn't mean it is a better deal than a full price elsewhere. I'll elaborate. Unfortunately therein lies the problems with musical instruments - line up seven of exactly the same guitar from the same factory from the same day, and one will be miles above the others for sound quality. One will sing and you'll notice it compared to the others. There just aren't two guitars the same - you can test this yourself by annoying the salesmen in any guitar shop in Leeds and ask to play as many of the same brand and issue as they have! (In buying a guitar recently I did just this to weedle out the best one!) What I'm getting at is that Big Deal have a lot of great offers and some very nice prices, but be sure to test the item first and make sure it sings as well as it should. Unless you've naught the patience for all that, in which case, go enjoy a bargain!

If you need anything electrical from cables to speakers, turntables to laptops, guitars and lights they are likely to have it for a good price although this value seems to have decreased (i.e. prices have risen) since el crunchio. You get a three month guarantee with most items and part-exchanges are welcome. Many of my friends have happily purchased second-hand laptops from here (after a mass laptop theft) and all are happy with their purchases. Enjoy a tight-squeezed browse or just ask what you are after and the men will be glad to help.
