There's usually a rocky theme to the music and clientele but that shouldn't put you off if it's not your bag. I've got a smile on my face just writing about it! The selection of ales was a relatively familiar one, with a tasty exception in Golden Pippen, delicious. They had 5 others, including a couple that have to be brought up from the cellar in a jug (a few places locally do this and boast of doing this..not quite sure why it is such a big deal). Was surprised and happy to see Dark Star Hophead so far from home too. Quite a bit of food choice, including a selection of pies. I braved the game pie as it contained venison and pheasant, neither of which I had previously sampled. This was nice too. The pub really can do no wrong! It was seriously difficult tearing myself away from the Hollybush, to try some other local pubs.

The fairly cluttered layout identifies it as a historic pub, there are several designated areas so it won't get *too* loud even when busy [which it mostly is in the evenings]. Good food, wide variety of real ales and ciders on tap (large rather than particularly distinguished on my visit), good atmosphere. It's a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus station in Milford, a little remote and easy to miss (God bless Google Maps!). Very popular with the locals. There are several good pubs within a short radius (this one, the Strutt-on-Arms & the King Williams IV). Get a zig-zag ticket on the Sixes buses from Derby so you can hop on and off at the various stops of your crawl.

The inside is pleasant enough, the outside stylish and inviting. You can drink and eat by the river. It is larger than some other pubs on the "river front" along the main road in this small town. The bartender wasn't exactly friendly when I visited, but then you'll normally have pretty minimal exchange with him. It is certainly a likeable option.

However, sadly it seemed they were totally unprepared for the opening, which was actually the day before. The downstairs bar was not staffed but you could sit downstairs and enjoy the roaring open fire just like the good old days. The issue was groups of people were coming into the downstairs bar, taking seats and then standing at the bar to be served. At this point I found myself repeatedly having to inform them the bar was not staffed and they had to get their drinks from the bar upstairs. There was no signage telling customers of this situation and it was very strange, it was causing total confusion for a lot of customers. When I ordered my drinks at the upstairs bar I gave the man and women, who I assume were the new landlords a warm welcome, saying how much everyone was looking forward to finally getting the doors open. This was met with basically total indifference and a weak and begrudge smile, there was no response. I was left with a feeling that these new landlords really didn't want to be there and there was not one ounce of enthusiasm or customer engagement. My round, for a pint of larger and a pint of larger shandy came to £6.20, the same round thirty minutes later was £7. Even £7 is a good price but the change of price is worrying, maybe it was just getting used to the till. But I have to wonder what experience these new people have, where are their customer service skills, their interaction, the welcoming smile of the people behind the bar that encourages you to go back....or NOT Sadly we saw a lot of people on the night walk out after waiting a long time to be served, they simply walked over to the other pub thirty yards away. I can accept that new landlords have to settle in and find their feet in a new pub, but when they cant even get the basics right, like a sign saying THIS bar is NOT manned, and a warm welcoming smile with some polite conversation with customers that will support them in the future. You would expect on the second night of opening the landlords would want to make a good impression from the start, a nice smile, chit chat, some, a little ENTHUSIASM. Hundreds of pubs are shutting every year all around the UK and after years of waiting the Abbey has finally opened to a welcoming, enthusiastic and supportive customer base within the local and wider community. My partner and I will be going back in the hope it was just early doors teething problems which will be resolved, also in the hope the landlords manage to dig deep and find suitable and genuinely friendly personalities for their customers. They need to employ more staff, open the bar downstairs, get a grip of their drink prices and for God sake smile and put some effort into engaging with your customers in a warm and friendly manner. The Abbey is supposedly haunted by a friendly monk, lets hope its not now haunted by two unfriendly Landlords

The lady the behind the bar was very friendly and welcoming towards this German tourist, and I found it easy to talk to some of the patrons, too. The Samuel Smith beers are of very high quality, especially the Old Brewery Bitter (a cask-conditioned favorite) and the Pure Organic Lager; Samuel Smith have as many as four different lagers in their range, but this one is the best. You might also consider their various, mouth-watering fruit beers (bottled only). Darley is a picturesque little village, certainly worth a visit - and The Abbey Inn is the perfect place to unwind from a walk through Darley Park.

The draught beer was tasty but it didn't beat the people there. We met some amazing people that actually talked about our friends who were interns at our company before us. Very friendly staff and has a cozy atmosphere. Made friends with the landlady, Jackie, and I expect we'll see her again very soon. On a side note, though they don't offer any food, you can walk with your drink to the next door restaurant, Balti Tower. That's an entirely different review in itself, but that restaurant was also amazing, and I'm glad the two are affiliated with each other. At first we were skeptical judging by the very few people at the bar, but I wouldn't have wanted our first pub experience to be anywhere else but here. Cheers.

Sure, you'll get the usual array of GK ales, only a few of which can actually be recommended. However, there are usually many guest ales available on tap, too - plus, they're running their own beer festivals. The location itself is just splendid: The pub is subdivided into several discrete sections, with a larger room to the back. So, if you want it quiet, choose one of the two smaller "compartments" to the front of the pub. Beautiful old wood for décor, a bar each in the three areas - a small outside seating area, generally nice staff - What's not to like? If you can overcome your prejudices against "Greedy King", by all means drop by while in Nottingham.

It is a pub full of interesting,wood panelled, atmospheric rooms each with their own story to tell. Keeps a good range of real ales and food. Recently refurbished. Well worth a visit. A group of Carmelite Friars arrived in Nottingham in 1276 and readily obtained lands and property. They established a Friary (on what is now Friar Lane) and their lands extended to include the site of what is now The Bell Inn. By the accurate dating of the building, it's identification as a hostelry with stables, and it's location, it is reliably considered that the building was the guesthouse of the Friary. The Bell originally served as a refectory of the Carmelite monastery then sited on Beast market Hill, just below St James Street Junction. Henry VIII closed small monasteries in 1539 in an effort to tap a valuable source of income, and then it became a secular alehouse, taking it's name from the Angelus bell (Latin word meaning 'the noon-day bell') that hung outside the monks' refectory, which explains how The Bell got its name. Dendrochronology dating evidence from timbers in the Bell Inn gives a date for the building of c.1420. Hardys & Hansons, Greene King IPA 3.6% abv and Abbot Ale 5% abv, plus a wide selection of quality guest ales from an ever-changing selection.
