We stopped by Frog and the Bull this evening for a quick bite after an event close by... totally picked the place off of Yelp and my confidence in my fellow Yelpers to be on point. We were not disappointed! Frog and the Bull is a modest sized place in a strip mall, nice vibe, folks having a good time at the bar. Destiny was our waitress, she did a great job, attentive but not intrusive. Thanks Destiny! We started the meal with the brussels sprouts on the recommendation of Destiny. What a winner that dish is! Sprouts, apples, Manchego cheese, sherry vinegarette reduction and some awesome bacon bits... heaven on a plate! For entrees, we opted for the pepper-crusted filet, medium rare, and the fish and chips. Both plates were good. The filet was cooked perfectly, spot on temperature, and the pepper-crust was a bit overpowering. Not bad, interesting. We're more purists when it comes to meat, so the filet itself would likely have been even more delicious. The sides of asparagus and pasta were okay, a Basque-style potato on the side would have outshined the pasta. The fish and chips were good. The fish was fresh, nice batter, served piping hot as it should be. The fish portion was modest, especially given the price tag. At that price point ($25), the fish serving should have been twice the size. The initial serving of "chips" were room temperature at best, but that was quickly remedied by Destiny when brought to her attention. The truffle fries are darn good when hot! All in all, a good meal. A 4-star experience. The above observations are intended to suggest options for improvements, not criticize. The "Frog" portion of the restaurant's name is an homage by the owner (a former Navy Seal) to his fallen Navy brethren. (Note the Navy Seal Trident above the entrance to the kitchen). UPDATE: I'm so saddened by the changes here in the past 3 months. This isn't the restaurant we looked forward to taking our family to. Did they change ownership? The Spanish roots are gone. Reduced Tapas menu. Where's the Lamb lollipops, meatballs, etc we used to love? Overcooked Salmon. Where's the pride in ownership? Dirty windows. Only 1 outdoor heater working. Rotting deck. Paper towel dispenser barely hanging on the wall (husband reported in men's room). Owner working on his business at a table in the dining room. The pizza may keep them afloat, but idk. This isn't about staff not caring. (They were friendly as always). I hope the owner wakes up and brings back the passion and vision that was present when they opened a few years ago. read more

I was really excited to try this place! We went for happy hour which goes from 5-6pm. We came specifically for the BOGO tapas and BOGO wine glass Wednesday. When we arrived, we asked for the wine deal and were told it's no longer available. Confused, I pointed to the website which listed today's date and the BOGO glass deal. I was told by the server that the manager has since changed removed that special, and he asked the bartender already who said they wouldn't offer it. Really disappointing as we were very excited to try the champagne they offer by the glass. When we went to order our tapas, we were told that deal had changed as well and instead of BOGO it was buy one get one 50% off. This time, I pointed to the happy hour menu provided to us, at the table, and were told again that offer is no longer available. We ordered tapas anyways because we were starving, and the chicken wings arrived overcooked, the beef tenderloin "tips" were small chunks of beef well done (not at all what I expected for a steakhouse), and the truffle fries were dry (I've never had dry fries, this was a first). When the bill came, I noticed that the margarita cocktail that I switched to given the wine offer wasn't available was charged at full price as well ($5 on happy hour, charged $11, which is a very large difference). Really disappointed by this experience and our food, especially given the every day prices were not inexpensive by any means. They have a modern take on Spanish tapas favorites as well as a good mix of American favorites. Gambas we're very good. This is such a great little find! This restaurant is very classy, with upscale amenities in a very laid-back atmosphere. The staff is excellent but the food is really what shines. They have the most gorgeous charcuterie boards, and the prime rib is not to be missed. Truly delicious and exceptional. They have an impressive wine list and great drink specials, as well. This is a great date night locale a mind you'll get amazing food at reasonable prices. I was a bit apprehensive about trying this place because it had mixed reviews. However, I decided to give it a shot on Valentine's Day, and am I glad I did! I REALLY enjoyed it. While looking at their website and menu online, I was a little confused. I couldn't really tell if they were a Tapas Bar, a Steakhouse, Fine Dining, or Sports Bar. However, when I got there, I found out they were all of the above. The atmosphere is sort of "mixed". It's a cross between fine dining, and upscale sports bar. There are large TV's on every wall, but the "Mood" is sort of "upscale". They had good music playing in the background, the tables had black tablecloths on them, and the chairs were comfortable. The staff were all well dressed and groomed, and very friendly. The Co-Owner (husband/wife team) was front and center and very accommodating. One of their featured items is their prime rib. My prime rib was big, good flavor, and cooked the way I like it. My wife had the Oso Bucco and it was tender and flavorful (and quite large). They have all sorts of craft cocktails, and the bartender was pretty awesome. The ONLY thing I got worried about was that we had a 6:30 reservation, but got there about 5:30 to have a few drinks before we sat for dinner. The owner's wife kept asking us if we just wanted to eat at the bar, and we told her "no", that we just wanted to have a couple of drinks before we were seated. When 6:30 came, they had gotten pretty busy. Most all of the tables were taken. I went to the young hostess and reminded her that we had a 6:30 reservation, that we had been there an hour, and not to forget us. She was so busy that she never even came to say anything to us, so I grabbed the owner's wife (Co-Owner) and told her we were ready. She immediately got us a table, and actually waited on us, herself. Could have been an issue if she hadn't been there. Everything else went smoothly. That's the predominant complaint I kept seeing online, was that the "service" was "Lacking". I think that they just have young women handling the seating, and they aren't quite as experienced in handling a crowd. Everything else was good. We came here for Valentine's Day. We started off with some bacon wrapped dates. It was pretty good. My husband ordered the strip and it was cooked to perfection. My daughter and I ordered the 24 oz ribeye to share which was paired with some baby carrots and potato wedges and was also cooked to perfection. We also had ordered the mashed potato ala cart because we were not aware one of the sides was potato. ( wished the server would have mentioned that knowing it was our first time here) so we could have tried a different side. The mashed potatoes was cold and just ok. We also ordered a bottle of red cab that was pretty decent and inexpensive. I would say our server was missing throughout the evening and forgot my daughters ice tea and never refilled our ice teas. First time here. Great food, interesting menu. Good selection of beer, wine, and quality drinks. I tried tbe burger, which was served on a Spanish bread. Not the italian ciabatta which has a harder crust, more like traditional spanish bread. The meat and the bacon were outstanding. The combination was unique and flavorful. The fries were some of the best I have had. My wife had a chorizo flatbread which was very good. Tasted like authentic Spanish chorizo. We had a great time and a great meal. First of all, this place has delicious food! We did the tapas which are the small appetizer plates and shared between 4 people. We order all but two of them. I couldn't really capture it in the picture, but the queso comes out flaming and goes out rather quickly. Just a really pleasing thing to see before you dig in. I was also very appreciative that the bartender went out of her way and stuffed blue cheese into my olives for my martini as that is not something that really is offered. That made my night, and my drink! The manager came to our table and chatted with us for a little bit. Very nice gentleman that you can tell cares about the happiness of his patrons. I really wanted to like this place because there aren't any tapas places around here. Overall, it's not amazing and I'd be very hesitant to come back. They need to hire better staff. They all look disappointed to be there and make a point of never checking on your table. At no point during our 10 plate meal did they ever remove an empty plate. When I asked for an extra cup of sauce 10 minutes before the kitchen closed, they declined. After finishing, it took 23 minutes for anyone to come bring us a check. The Good: Every tapas place consistently makes tasty patatas bravas. It's expected and it was good here. I wish the potatoes were crispy, but the spicy tomato sauce and mayonnaise could make a rock taste good. The queso carried the entire meal. Anything that was bland or cold, we shoved into a mouthwatering bite with the Queso. It comes out flaming as the name suggests, but our first bite tasted like isopropyl alcohol since not all of it burned away. The chew and flavor were great though! The star of the show was the chimichurri sauce and the side of pickled peppers. I would put these on everything if we didn't get a teaspoon of each. they refused to give us anymore. The Bad: Do NOT order the a la carte sides. The broccolini and mashed potatoes come out cold and have zero seasoning on them. Luckily we had some salt and cheese from other dishes to help them. The lemon orzo has no lemon in it? You're better off ordering more patatas bravas instead of wasting your money on these sides. The ceviche... is weird and surprisingly bland. It comes with small pieces of fish with blueberries, capers, and onions smothered in vinegar. It's topped with a radish and coconut foam. For a plate with so much, the only thing I remember tasting was the vinegar. Just stick to the basics and throw cilantro, lime, and fish together. I'd pay for that. Lastly, the $22 grilled chicken was a let down. The skin was okay, but it came out lukewarm and was lacking any flavor. It had char marks but no grill taste. The menu said peri peri seasoning, but there was just a little sprinkled around the plate. Luckily, we threw the Queso and the remnants of peppers on each bite to get through it. Do not order this main. Overall, if we were in the area, we'd give this place a shot at the bar. Everyone says the *bar only* burgers are tasty and the cocktails looked good. If I could give negative five stars, I would. We arrived prior to our party and ordered from a man who later turned out to be the owner. Waited 15 minutes before asking about our drinks and it became clear he did not place the order. At dinner, two were served our entree's, after we were finished the third entree came and later the fourth. My spouse went up to tell the manager about the poor service, he preceded to berate her about how many hours they work and if you don't like it to leave. First, we were asked by the hostess where we would like to be seated and requested the cushioned seating against the wall, we sat for 5 mins, then were asked by the same hostess to move because they had a larger group coming. That never happened. As we sat at our new table, we waited, and we never saw this larger group never show up. So, let me share our horrible experience and break this down for you. We were waited on by a younger male, who didn't know the menu and didn't know to ask how we wanted our steaks cooked. luckily, we told the young waiter that we wanted med rare steaks. We ordered the lamb medallions, bacon dates for appetizers, and the $51 med rare ribeye, salmon, and med rare NY steak. One of the younger ladies that moved us, (now im wondering why we were actaully moved), came over and without asking if we wanted water refills, took our glasses as we held them, and filled our glasses with water. She didn't even say anything to us. How disrespectful. AFTER 48 MINS OF WAITING FOR OUR FOOD, My ribeye came out well done, and my daughter's salmon was FROZEN. LITERALLY FROZEN. We informed the male manager, who didn't appreciate being told these facts, so he got rude. My daughter told him that this is a huge HEALTH concern and violation. The manager didn't like this and kicked us out. We were TOLD TO LEAVE THE RESTAURANT DUE TO US BEING SERVED FROZEN FISH. The manager walked away from us, yelling at us to leave. We ended up leaving the restaurant and wrote this review. Read other reviews about the managers of the business. You will find that they are very disrespectful. See one previous review on the same day, in the same hour, having a similar experience. Everyone, just be ready for the manager to argue or challenge this review. As I was talking to him, he got argumentative, almost combative, stating, "we needed to hurry and get out of his restaurant," with no attempt at a professional approach as an owner should. We were quite disappointed when the food came out about how it looked. The queso flameado was good and the braised short rib tasted nice as well when combined with the natural gravy and mash potatoes that were on the side. Everything else was ok I guess. The queso probably was the best side we got...anything that I ate pretty much got dipped in the cheese to make it taste better. I heard their chicken sandwich was good but thought it was kind of dumb that it's "bar only". The only person that drinks at in my family is my dad and he asked if he could just buy alcohol at the bar and still get a sandwich for my brother but they said no but its whatever. The service was not very good. The staff kinda looked done for and just wanted to go home. The only time our waitress came around was to give us our food, refill our drinks, take our plates, and give us our check... she never asked if our food was alright or if we needed anything else. I love tapas. I was excited to see on social media that they were open for dine in during COVID-19. It's in west Austin, so it was a nice drive to get out of town for a worthy dinner. The menu is smaller than online but that makes sense. The owner came out to chat with us and shared how the business was doing--most businesses aren't doing well given the environment we're in right now. I'm glad I was able to come and support. It was a hot day and we were sat outside. I was a little worried but the fans and shade kept everything cool and it was actually nice sitting on the patio! Nice selection of albarino white wines and beers. The food was delicious and I could feel the love in each bite. It tasted authentic and complex. I really enjoyed the tuna carpaccio and the bone marrow! You have to get the dessert if you like chocolate moussed infused with brandy. read more

We have been here twice and the pizza is fabulous. The rest of the menu is also wonderful. My grandson loves the wings. So, the food is great, but the fellow who seats us and waits on us (I'm thinking he is the owner) his terribly rude and non engaging. He acts like he doesn't want to be there and we are bothering him. This isn't a one time experience. We had the same experience with him both of our visits there. Elu looked like she was not wanting to be there although she answered questions on the food you could tell her knowledge of the menu was not there. She never once asked how the drink or food was and never refilled waters. I felt very rushed. She was polite though it all though so I gave her a 30% tip. What do you get when a retired navy seal (they call themselves Frogs) from Oahu, Hawaii moves to Austin (Texas = Bull) and opens up an Iberian (Spanish) restaurant in the hill country (Steiner Ranch)? You get Frog and The Bull. A man who pays homage to his roots & where he is now rooted makes me think he & his chef will pay close attention to his menu, and that he did. Each dish was paired so well with each wine, from the mushroom soup (white wine) to the dessert (port), not to mention the generous portions. It must be from the owners Hawaiian hospitality too. @feedmi_ and I especially enjoyed their white wines and I loved their final red! All of which are from regions of Spain. Sorry California and French wines - you won't be found here. It was a true Iberian evening, if I do say so myself. We had their 6-course dinner for a media event. It was so much food! We've been meaning to try this place so put the kids in AKR and went here around 5:30pm on December 28. We ate Iberian/Spanish often before we moved to Austin in 2016 and I will say that the food for us was excellent and we were quite pleased. I saw some other comments around the wine pricing but we saw options around $11 - $22 per glass and the bottles ran the usual gambit. We ordered some wine by the glass to experiment with their offerings. The wine was quite nice and we tried 5 dishes. Frog & The Bull is priced more up market but we are totally fine with that for a quality meal. What holds this back from a 5 star rating for me centers around a couple of factors: - The waiter couldn't quite articulate the portions of the dishes and a recommendation on how many so we settled on 5 (which was certainly enough). I'd expect a little better guidance with an environment that blends tapas and main course dishes since we like to try different things in this sort of setting. This isn't a huge issue, just something you expect to be more seamless for an establishment targeting the higher end. - We had to get their early due to our young kids and the place only had one other party dining due to the early dinner hour. The food all came basically around the same time(2 dishes then the other 3 within 5 minutes). It'd be nice to space it out more especially if you aren't busy. Had it been more spaced out, we would've stayed longer and ordered a bottle of wine (we just went to Sloan & Parker after since our meal was complete). I think the refinement of service is probably related to teething issues still being pretty new. I suspect that will improve over time and, again, we were very pleased with the quality of food. All in all, I recommend this place. It's nice to have more diverse options in our neighborhood saving us from having to head downtown all the time for something a bit more premium and different. read more

Horrible experience. Despite what the reviews say the establishment was loud, run by drunk and slurring bartenders. Our bartender was a female that had no clue what she was talking about in regards to wine and not to mention they were out of basically all the wine except for the most expensive glass??? Weird? Oh btw a glass of wine will run you 15-25 a GLASS!! we were only served there $25 glass of wine because "that's all they had" and it was less than enjoyable. Took about 20 min to get our check while she was stumbling around doing I'm not too sure what. The place was gloomy and unkept. Extremely overpriced. Service was less than poor. My friend got the grilled shrimp with the roasted brussel sprouts. We just discovered this place last minute before deciding to go and and was so happy we did. Everything was cooked exquisitely, yes exquisitely. We ate outside but I loved the indoor decor. With that being said, I've been thinking about this place ever since March.
