In the site around the corner from Temple Meads, they're also a wood workshop and reclaimation yard - I picked up a very nice antique chest from here to use as a coffee table. They deliver and collect recycled wood from all around the city and like the Sofa Project they also help out people with social problems, so they're a social enterprise as well as being completely green.

They have a long list of services advertised on the front window - I needed some flyers when I used them, but they'll pretty much do anything of a commercial or private nature - even cashing in on the festive season with personalised christmas card printing.

It's obviously very important to recycle but what of the odd bits and bobs that the door collectors won't take for whatever reason? Well, this place takes EVERYTHING. As well as the obvious things like paper, glass and metal, you can also clear out the stuff that's always left in the bottom of your box, like plastic and cardboard. Going beyond that, they also, off the top of my head, take batteries, clothes, electrical appliances. There's even a special section for TVs and a gardening area where you can dump all the overgrown waste from your garden. A great way to unclutter your house and help the envorinment, all in one. NOTE: IT SHUTS AT 4.15PM IN WINTER, 6.45PM IN SUMMER.

It does get very busy on bank holiday weekends and sunny Sundays but even with a queue out to Barrow Road you won't have to wait too long because of said organisation. Hearing about Shoe Tappers through a friend, I promptly headed down there and was served by a very friendly shop keeper who cut me a key there and then. I was charged about £5 and six months down the line, my key remains as good as new. Shoe Tappers also provides shoe repairs, watch, battery and strap fitting/adjusting and leather bag repairs, to name but a few of its many charms.

Basically, when I was getting married I needed my trousers taking up, so I headed into the centre and was quoted around £15 for this simple alteration. I had a look at Yell.com and called this place who quoted half the price. The shop is a little ramshackle, but it's friendly, independent, cheap and they did a great job. One thing: make sure you know where it is before you set out. It's tucked away in Brislington (though near St Phillips) and one end of the road it's on isn't accessible by car.
