On the walls, behind the counter, next to you, behind you... everywhere you look... puppets! This cafe was my favorite find on a recent trip to St Malo where too many tourist traps abound. La Java is an original joint, the real deal where the owner runs his shop with a good dose of humor and booze. Sit down, relax and don't take anything too seriously. The drinks are cheap, the company friendly and the atmosphere is like nothing you'll ever see anywhere else. Enjoy the happy bric-a-brac and wisecracking that pervades this gem of a cafe. If you feel like chatting to the owner, why not sit at the bar on one of the swings? Uh, huh. Yep, they've got swings. Did I mention that I love this place?

Turns out it was fully booked ( who knew you had to book for lunch @a cafe?)so had to return an hour plus later... so worth the wait... the menu of the day (12€) was home made soup I had mushroom and hubs had a pea and ham; along with Croquet Monsieur ( mine traditional, hub's salmon + goat cheese ) and a most delicious green veggie salad. For the price and crowd size, I expected more. The staff seemed stretched thin, and the value just wasn't there. Good for a quick bite if you're nearby and patient, but temper your expectations.

They have dining in a small section upstairs and some seating downstairs, and they ask you to wait until you're called to come get your food so it doesn't hold up the line since it's a small entryway. He set a small table on the square while we waited and as it was my birthday he poured a glass of champagne for our enjoyment while we waited. Everything came out very quickly and the whole staff was quite friendly. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals! My tart was excellent, with just a little sweetness from golden raisins and red peppers. My wife's salad was beautiful and delicious as well. She especially enjoyed the toast and goat cheese that was on top of the salad. An excellent meal with a wonderful view. Highly recommend!
