Unless you are a big account, they hand you from one account manager to another, and when they don't communicate to each other and something goes wrong, they tell you its your problem and not theirs!! We paid hundreds of dollars for one sample, which they don't even bother cutting for you!! They make you pay the full amount upfront and then when you are done they will send you additional invoices even if it didn't turn out right and then if you don't pay they threaten you with debt collectors!! DONT GO TO CARBON8, there are a bunch of good printers out there! Go somewhere else!!

Technically speaking, the trade died, and although there are a few letterpress tradesmen still hanging around telling stories, for the most part it is a thing of the past. High-speed offset litho whirred in, and printers retrained or got out of the industry entirely. But then the strange gentrified world of darlinghurst and surry hills produced this thing we call "hipsters" ... or was it the other way around? Bit of a chicken & egg scenario there ... but essentially ... everything low-fi, old tech, steam punk and retro has had an incredible resurgence amongst the inner city trendoids. I'm not telling you anything new here. And look, I know I'm not immune to the fashionable allure of retro heath robinson typeathings, so I can't really separate myself from this, critically. But I'm also a historian who spends a lot of time researching the printing industry. So you can imagine how weird it was to find myself inside an honest-to-goodness - functional letterpress business. Boom! It's a gorgeous place - attractively laid out, but presented in a way that you can see the presses at work. The men and women that run these machines are not tradespersons, they're just artistically minded people who were lucky enough to get jobs running letterpress and embossing machines. They do a good job, too. The Distillery still use old Heidelberg Cylinder presses, and they have an old Ludlow machine. (That's a typesetting machine used for large-type ... like for posters or headers.) Unlike letterpress techniques in the past - at the Distillery, the raised plates are often made of plastic, not metal, and the system for producing the plates is more-or-less computerised. I don't fully understand that side of things. But the actual printing method is proper letterpress, using thick cotton stock, and indenting the paper in that satisfying way that old-school letterpress printers would never dare do. You can get expensive luxury printing done here: wedding invitations, business cards, stationery, poster prints, and so forth.... It's not cheap, but what the hell, it's letterpress. And it's beautiful.

I rang Vertifix and from our first conversation, I knew that Wayne knew what he was talking about and was completely on the same page about the type of look and feel I wanted to go for. He even had the envelopes on hand to suit the size of the invitations and in the colours and finish I wanted. I ventured out to see him the next day, and I showed him the 3/4 finished artwork I wanted to get printed and he had his crafty graphic designer Jorge make them print ready at no cost (just checking it over to see it was ok for print and PDFing it for me) and then Jorge made little additional stationary elements with the same design look and feel for a small fee, which I also got printed with them. They were all done on the same day on which I asked for them, and as promised, they looked sublime! Super friendly, extremely efficient and fast, with fantastic knowledge and customer service, the guys here really blew me away. I felt like I could trust them since they were so obliging and ready to help me out with all aspects of the job. Let's face it - most print jobs are important, right? You're trying to make an impression with something be it a report or presentation, marketing materials or personal invitations etc... This cute little unknow printers is directly across from Broadway shopping centre. Its run by 4 university friends who have a passion for graphics and paper. What's so wonderful is they're really care and they're willing to go beyond the call of duty all the time! They get my tick of approval - their costs are fair and their service excellent.

Which was a first for 'self-service' do it myself copying (which I am hopeless at! eeek - technology and me don't go well). Service with a smile is the hallmark of any passionate business. And I found On Time Printing for my stack of photocopies a nice find. And in Crows Nest too - my local village shopping precinct. The humongous office franchises like Officeworks may be cheaper - and I have enjoyed doing business with Officeworks but now they have closed down their Artarmon operation I was left high and dry. Pal my husband suggested I shop locally and try out his fave photocopying haunt On Time. In an effort to try to shrink my ecological footprint and not drive to try to save $2 and also to support small local businesses I'm recommending and going back to On Time Printing.
