After diligently following Frosted Betty on Twitter yet never able to catch the elusive cupcake truck, I finally caught up with the van in the 19th St. alley way on a strikingly blaring hot day. $7 and even a few tears later, I walked home, eternally no longer in search of the elusive cupcake truck. Now, I have to admit that a purchased cupcake tend to leave me with a bitter taste of disappointment. I'm not sure when $3.25 became an acceptable price to charge for a mini-muffin with a dollop of colored shortening, but I mark my words, that day is a cold one in hell. I don't mind indulging unusual amounts of money in food. In fact, I do it regularly. However, I expect that price to be justified. For example, a Crave cupcake costs me $3.25, but I understand that what I am paying for is more than a cupcake. It is an oversized cupcake for one, but I'm also paying for a cute little fondant emblem, a nice atmosphere with stylish cupcake stands and adorable vintage mixers, a prime location that must cost an awful lot, and a friendly staff that can also brew a decent cup of coffee. What am I getting with my $3.25 cupcake from Frosted Betty? A very small cupcake. That is all. I love to support small businesses but I expect them to be logical. If you are selling food out of a truck, it must be priced at a discount to that same food out of a brick and mortar place. Why? Because you have no overhead costs! All price aside, when I see a cupcake truck I expect friendly, cheery, "cupcake-like" service. What I received from Frosted Betty instead, was a somewhat grumpy man who couldn't be bothered to care that I actually CRIED after losing my cupcake. Ok, so I was having a bad week to begin with. The man hands me two cupcakes and I fumble with them as I try to pay him. Where the F am I supposed to put the cupcakes while I pay you, Mr. Frosted Betty? Maybe you should take payment first?! Anyway, its blistering hot out and my hands sweaty, one cupcake simply slides right out of my hand as I go to pay him. Plop, lands face down on the floor. In response to my devastation, the man hands me a napkin. A napkin. Yes, because that's obviously what I want. It's okay as I have a second cupcake. I take one bite out of second cupcake. I turn around for a moment and boom! All of the frosting slides right off the cupcake! It is too hot out for the kind of shortening frosting they are using and it turns into glop. I bend down to wipe up the frosting and BAM! My small remaining bit of unfrosted cupcake slides right off the wrapper and onto the floor. I let out a little whimper. Mr. Frosted Betty's response? "Wow, did she drop it again?" Really? Really? YOU HEARTLESS MAN! I walk away devastated and forever sworn off cupcake trucks. read more

Lately, I've been stalking the Frosted Betty cupcake truck at the City Hall Farmers Market. I noticed the truck on previous trips to the market, but I'm not a cupcake fiend, nor would I proclaim to be a sweet tooth (until I was called out on it recently) so when I saw the truck, I thought to myself, oh, cute cupcake truck, but nothing more. Like someone whom you acknowledge is attractive, but dismiss is not for you, in your reach, realm, those were my sentiments regarding Frosted Betty. Until I saw they had pistachio cardamom cupcakes. Oh, and salted caramel cupcakes too?! Instant crush and pursuit. So, like a woman obsessed, I planned and schemed to attend the City Hall Farmers Market each Wednesday to get my cupcake fix--particularly pistachio cardamom and salted caramel. On another occasion, I bought a maple bacon flavored cupcake for my friend, and his conclusion was the maple bacon cupcake is like breakfast. My friend said it was like bacon and pancakes rolled into one and "there ain't nuthin' wrong with that!" These are under the "specialty cupcake" category and will run you $3.25 each; their other "classic" cupcakes are $3. As noted by other reviewers, these cupcakes are not huge, but I find their size to be just right, they are moist enough that they don't crumble and the icing is a very good complement to the cake itself. Apparently, the cakes are not iced until you order them. I've observed the owner (?) assembling them after I placed my order. The guys who run this truck are nice and friendly, another plus. So, if you happen to be at the City Hall Farmers Market and see me loitering by the cupcake truck, don't be surprised. read more

Let me start off by addressing a few other yelpers reviews. I don't understand why others have stated that the cupcakes are small, they are the same size as all of the other cupcakes out there and the same price $3 - $3.25. Unless they are talking about their "minis" which are priced $1.25 - $1.50. What makes this place different from the rest is that it was started by a young entrepreneur and her dad is always working the truck. Their best feature, they don't just do the regulars, chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, banana, lemon, carrot cake, strawberry and coconut almond, they have the fun and interesting stuff. Enter green tea, neopalitan, lychee, almond ricotta raspberry, maple bacon, peach cobler. Not to mention their cocktail cupcakes Mojito, Strawberry Daiquiri, Pina Colada, White Russian, Margarita, Baileys Irish Cream and Cosmopolitan. This list just names a few! I can't say that one cupcake place is better than another. I just have favorites at every place. What keeps me coming back to this place is the selection, my only criticism is I wish that they would let us know their cupcake schedule. They leaked some of it once and we were there in a heartbeat to try the Maple Bacon and oh man it was worth it. Tasted like a cupcake that is ok to eat for the best breakfast ever. No more scary solid frosting a la Sprinkles/CRAVE/Sugarbaby's. It's also not super sugary. Ran into "Betty" for a third time at the Firkin & Phoenix's "Tuscapalooza" benefiting victims of the tornadoes in Alabama. I am not a cupcake person and think that this is generally just a trend like bubble tea was a few years ago but I tell you what...The cupcakes are good and my appetite will capitalize on this trend as long as it is around. Most all of their cupcakes are pretty moist and full of sweet flavors. I would be careful of the mini's. Sure, it is a good idea as a food related gift but if you are not careful they may not last to delivery (because you will be munching on them on the way there). There is a variety of frosting which have a thicker consistency that icing. If anything they do a good job being creative with the frosting... Top Favorites in my three visits: - Maple Bacon (the Bacon frosting does the trick...amazing) - Almond Ricotta Raspberry (I like the ricotta part of this) - Lychee (reminds me of eating lychees in Asia when I was a kid) - Nutella filled cupcake (Nutella is awesome...to fill it up in what is already goodness is the next step in cupcake evolution) I have noticed trends in artisan cupcakes...which is OK. it is a way more cool trend than bubble tea or frozen yogurt. Continuing my cupcake review domination! red velvet - 3/5 The Frosted Betty Bake Shop stopped by last April at the Bayou Bash near the Sabine Street Lofts. After my mud bug and potato intake, dessert came at just the right time. Great weather, drinks, and a cupcake - it doesn't get much better. The cupcake was decent with the cake and icing being of equal rating. As Kristine mentioned, it was pretty small though. Pure heaven.... I became a fan of them on Facebook because they often post status updates as to where they will be and at what time. I saw on Facebook that they had arrived at 19th street so I drove right over to try them out. These cupcakes are FABULOUS! The texture of the cake is different than most, it has more of a cornbread consistency, it is more porous and crumbly. The icing is very light, has great flavor, but doesn't get that sugary "crust" like some icings can. I tried the Pistachio Cardamon as well as a vanilla cake with peanut butter icing (you can choose any icing you want for vanilla!) I was super impressed and this cupcake adventure may become a weekend tradition :) I'll admit - as other reviewers mentioned - if you buy cupcakes in the heat of the summer then take them home, if you are not careful the icing will fall off.... but it still tastes the same! read more

Other reviews have pointed out that the cupcakes are either $3 or $3.25. This is the going rate of "artisan" cupcakes these days, so price complaints seem silly. Cupcakes are $3, Lattes are $5, facts of life. However I get why others are saying they are expensive, after eating them, they don't feel like $3 of awesome cakey goodness -- they fall short, somehow. I grabbed an Almond Ricotta Raspberry, and a Pistachio Cardamom from the Frosted Betty truck when it was parked at the Houston Museum of Natural Science Skeletons and Spirits party on Friday. They had a short line, and cupcakes sounded like a good midnight snack. Almond Ricotta Raspberry: The cake was moist with an almond flavor, but it could have had a little more personality, or some raspberries or just a little more oomph. The icing was very rich, and too sweet. I like raspberry for it's tartness, but it tasted as though they'd tried to bury the tart with extra sugar. Pistachio Cardamom: Interesting flavor, lots more creative than standard "box" cupcake flavors. Both the cake and the icing had more personality, and the sweetness wasn't so overwhelming. I'd definitely recommend this flavor. Maple bacon sounds really good, but they didn't have that flavor available when I visited. Maybe if I run into the truck again I'll try that one. read more

Attempted to try the Mobile Bake Shop at the Haute Wheels Food Truck Festival today. The event wasn't even half over and after waiting 45 minutes in line, all Frosted Betty had left was 3 cake balls. They were ok, but pretty much melted and gooy. I would've like to try the cupcakes but they ran out. Seriously? How do you go to an event that is supposed to run from 12-7 and run out of your product by 3:30? Pretty poor planning. Oh, and we got ripped off as well. The cake balls were $1 each and giving them a $5 they forgot to give us change (and after waiting that long for really nothing, we were like whatever and walked off) I might give Frosted Betty another chance since the whole food truck festival was pretty much a disaster for all the trucks involved.... but my first impression of both product and service was pretty underwhelming. read more

What I like about this place is that they frost the cupcake as you order it. The quality of the cupcake isn't necessarily the most moist I've ever had but the consistency of the actual frosting was light, creamy an delicious. Mmmhhmmm. Salted Caramel Icing. And that's about it. I got the Salted Caramel Chocolate, Pistacho Cardomom, Lemon and Strawberry Cupcakes. The frosting was overwhelmingly sweet and light- like it was beat into a froth and crystalized. Too thin and sugary for me. The cake itself was a non-event. The Pistachio Cardomom stood out because it was particularly heavy on the Cardomom- not a good thing. They are opening up a shop on Studemont and I know I'll be back just to support cupcakes . But I wasn't super impressed with the exception of the Salted Caramel Icing. read more

Love that Frosted Betty pops up around downtown and other convenient locations, so I never seem to have to go far for a cupcake craving. Like someone else said, I'm not sure why others have complained that the cupcakes are small. Yes, $3.25 seems on the high end for a single-serving of cake-product, but this is about the going rate when you compare to the competition. While I thoroughly enjoyed my cupcakes, I thought the Nutella one was a bit lacking in Nutella-goodness. Also, the cake here is better than the icing. I visited their tiny store front, connected with a clothing store. A very strange combination and they were very limited on their selection. Their salted caramel was boring and lacked creativity. Their pistachio had a nice flavor for the topping, but the cake itself was boring. They need to do much better in creativity, flavors, presentation, and options. I guess if you want to visit the store, morning would be the best time, as opposed to the early evening. read more

The cake balls were the real gems! Rich, sweet, creamy soft inside covered with crunchy chocolate shell. My favorite was the vanilla, but my coworker loved the chocolate balls. The "deconstructed" cupcake has it's unique charm. I enjoyed the loose flaky texture combined with the rich sweet creamy frosting. Like most food trucks at the event, most of their items ran out very quickly and the wait was dreadful. I am glad I had a taste, but not looking forward to stand in the long line again. read more

I ordered two cupcakes today while at a food truck event, the red velvet and the salted caramel. They were "deconstructed" cupcakes and perfect for the event but I'm not sure if this is how the cupcakes normally come. Each cupcake came in a individual cup and looked more like the child's dessert "dirt cup" than a cupcake. It was three layers of cupcake and two layers and a top layer of icing. I really liked the presentation for the event and the Salted Carmel was amazing, the red velvet just OK. While I'm giving Frosted Betty 3 stars I full heartedly want to visit their food truck again to sample from their menu further. read more

If you're hungry and tired and hot, any decent cupcake will make your day. Like a reviewer had mentioned earlier, I'd rather spend my $3 per cupcake at Frosted Betty than to support a cupcake chain like Sprinkles and have to wait in line for 30 minutes behind tweens sporting mini Dior purses and Ferragamo headbands, even though they're cupcakes taste SLIGHTLY , just SLIGHTLY better. I also found joy in the elusiveness of the truck (only there from 1-4 on a quiet Sunday afternoon in the Heights). The shop is opening soon in the same spot on Studewood and I can't wait to see it. read more

While at the Downtown Farmers market today we grabbed a couple of cupcakes (vanilla and chocolate) today from the moble unit of Frosted Betty Bake Shop. The cup cakes themselves were ok...nothing special if anything they were a little dry IMHO however the frosting was very good. I dont shop from cupcakes that often but I thought $3.00 each was a little high. For that price I expected a much larger caupcake than the ones you can make at home...thats $36.00 a dozen! I consider myself a connoisseur of cakes and the like. I really haven't come across any dessert item that didn't hold a special place in my heart, but cake is definitely my main squeeze. I was recently gifted a box of two Frosted Betty cupcakes; red velvet and carrot cake. The red velvet I ate immediately. The cake was very moist and the frosting was perfect. 5 stars easily!! The carrot cake I saved in the fridge (I don't really know the best way to keep cake items fresh i just assume everything goes in the fridge). The next night I dug into the carrot cupcake knowing full well that there was a very real possibility the cake would be stale and hard. It wasn't at all. The frosting had solidified a bit but otherwise the cupcake retained much of its freshness. I was delighted! read more

First off, I haven't reviewed in a while coz my husband and I got church-hitched in my home-country 20,000 miles away, so it's been crazy, but I'm back. Now I usually let more review-savvy Yelpers review for me, but in this instance, I feel I should give my 2 cents. After seeing the spot next to Oo La La have a sign for Frosted Betty- coming soon (I was told by the Frosted Betty's dad that if all goes well, they will be open in 10 days so woot!), and looking at their website and seeing SALTED CARAMEL (and green tea, whoa!) among their flavors, I was immediately hooked. I don't care if salted caramel is passe, but has anyone had a good salted caramel paleta? Coz I have, and it's great, period. So I like salted caramel, and Frosted Betty has a salted caramel cupcake, therefore I want to get a Frosted Betty cupcake in guess what flavor? Fast forward to today, the day before V day. Lo and behold, there is Frosted Betty in front of Oo La La, and they have salted caramel! I get one, cradle it to me protectively all the way home, have half (give the other half to my spousie), and I.am.in.heaven. It's like sea salt-chocolate with caramel. I'm lactose intolerant, and I usually don't eat cupcakes, but I made an exception, and as much as my stomach groaned for 5 hours after, my tastebuds thanked me over and over. Now if THIS had been gluten free AND vegan, I would have given it 5 stars, but as it is, it's good, and I'm picky about giving 5, so 4 stars it is. I also understand it's 3.25 a cupcake, and it's not Sprinkles or Crave, but it's still a pretty good cupcake. It's local and not a chain, and I will gladly support local as long as it's a good product. People who complain about this should watch Food Inc and see how supporting chains indirectly lead to big monster corporations like Monsanto who will crush smaller competitors. Also, supporting local gives back revenue to your area over more than a chain does. Bottom dollar isn't really the pair of shoes you got for a steal, it can also mean less jobs for your neighborhood. You've Got Mail is a classic example, but without the happy ending. Me? I will support the smaller, local person who works his butt off. So $3.25 it is. And if it's really too expensive for you, make your own cupcake. $3.25 will add up if you eat it everyday or even every other day, but if it's a treat, then that's all it will be. And a $3.25 treat is ok, IMO. And if you buy 2 cupcakes and it/frosting slips and falls, most people won't give you another one. Sorry, that's how it is. Maybe just be more careful? This was my first experience with a dessert gourmet truck. My friends and I are on a mission to try all of them in Houston. So far, I have been pleased with the different options. I was very excited to get a Nutella cupcake but it didn't satisfy my chocolate craving as much as I thought it would. My friend thought her cupcake was the best ever. I would still rather go to Crave or Sprinkles. However, I would never turn down the cupcake if offered. lol read more

My co-worker stood in line for cupcakes while I stood in the burger line food truck. They ran out of cupcakes so he brought me over bread pudding. Presentation was okay. It came in a small tin ramekin with a small serving of bread pudding soaked in cream. I was able to eat the whole thing in 3 bites. Surprisingly, it was dry, even though its soaked in some type of vanilla cream. It needs more moisture and should be served warm. Overall, it was just okay. read more

We tried Frosted Betty mobile shop at the Houston art crawl. We thought it would be the perfect opportunity to start the research for our wedding cupcakes. We ordered the Nutella flavor and were first informed that we could have either a chocolate or vanilla cupcake - that only the frosting was flavored. We opted for chocolate and kept our fingers crossed for a popping Nutella flavor icing. We were denied. It tasted like sweetened Crisco. The cake fell apart in our hands and we couldn't even break it in two. There was chocolate cake everywhere. It literally crumbled. The icing came off in one big blob and was impossible to wash off our hands. Its possible the mobile truck limits their capabilities but this was enough for me to cross them off my list of wedding possibilities and any future business. read more

Another adventure to the "farmers market" downtown H-town today, and on the menu today was dessert. We spotted the Frosted Betty-mobile and ordered right up. 3 bucks a cupcake wasn't the best deal but not a deal breaker either, so I ordered up the Salted Caramel...figured chocolate cake and a nice caramel frosting can't go wrong, right? Eh, I will say the plastic cupcake holder was designed for a wider cupcake so the spinning effect did well to dislodge the frosting on step #3 - that was the good part. The short walk later back at the office I pour a lovely Java Pura cup of coffee and dive right in...........................glad I had the coffee because I am not a baker, nor do I play one on TV, but I am sure that cupcakes are NOT supposed to be this dry, and the frosting I am assuming is just flavored whip-topping so that had kinda just melted (6 blocks and it is in the 70s today, melting icing?) So I will say that Betty's isn't all that and there are WAY better options for sweets (vending machine is one) but if you want to try these half of this cupcake is floating around in the trash in my office.
