For the entire time we have lived in bakersfield, our mechanic was greg at advanced auto. He passed away and his friend mark took over the business. great group of guys, trustworthy and skilled. Fast forward to this year and I found out the business was sold. Welp, time for the dreadful task of finding a new mechanic. Luckily , before they closed greg and mark referred us to Gill's transmission services. I gave Gill a call and he recommended Fruitvale automotive. I made an appointment for my wife's car. Fast forward today and I was able to drop it off at 8. Parking can be a little tight. Shane called me back at 10:30 and the car was ready to go. He let me know the hood latch system was able to be fixed, saving us a few hundred dollars. They also were able to refill the freon so my wife has an ice cold AC before it gets too hot. I would give this place ZERO stars, if I could. I took my 2005 Toyota Sequoia here for the first time. Easter week is their busiest week, so I had to wait a week just for Shane to look at it. He had it for almost 24 hours and I decided to call him, even though he was so incredibly rude on the phone the last time we spoke. He told me that I needed to replace or rebuild my entire engine, even though I had plenty of oil, which he couldn't explain and when I asked what caused my engine to go out he said nobody will be able to determine why...well, it turns out it was just a loose spark plug and I just needed to replace them, along with 2 ignition coils. Thankfully, Shane doesn't charge for his lazy diagnosis, and now I know why and I'm just so glad I didn't waste hard earned money here. If you didn't want to do the work, Shane, just say so. And hire a receptionist if you don't have time to just be polite when answering the phone. If you need a good, reliable mechanic who's gonna be honest and treat you well, check out McWilliams & Walden on E. Brundage. They actually took the time to look at my motor and they were able to determine the real cause and they charged me a fair price. Shame on you, Shane. So, my family and I are still new to Bakersfield, and we weren't sure where to go for a good, honest, trustworthy mechanic. So, I asked the women at my church where they would recommend we go for a good, reliable, trustworthy mechanic. A couple of them recommended Fruitvale Automotive. I am big on reviews, so of course, I read them, and I was shocked at all the positive feedback. I prayed that I would have a positive experience, and then I went in and was warmly greeted by the notorious Shane I read about in the reviews. He explained that they are by appointments only but offered to come out and run a test to see why my check engine light was on to ensure it wasn't anything that needed to be addressed immediately. He said if it wasn't, he would schedule me an appointment. To my surprise, he said the problem wasn't an issue and that he would reset the check engine light and if it comes back on to come back. He then told me I'm safe to drive from Bakersfield to New York. Needless to say, I'm good to go to Los Angeles tomorrow. They are by appointment and I'm glad they do as it made the my first time for a quick turn around on the truck. I had overheating issues and potentially other potentially other major issues related to the engine and luckily it was only the radiator that was having issues. I went ahead with the replacement and also asked them if they can do the struts after giving me a update of their findings and they had no issues at all with that request. I've heard good things about Fruitvale Automotive. I called to see if they could adjust the valves in my Honda accord and they said they do not do that. Just found it odd that they are mechanics, but don't do valve adjustments. Perhaps Honda engines just aren't what they work on there. I don't know. Let me just start by saying: please come here. BACKSTORY: I moved to Bakersfield 6 months ago and was worried as I was moving away from my mechanic that had known me since I was a child back in Palmdale. For me, it's really hard to trust people-- especially any mechanic that isn't the one I already knew. As a chick I'm always terrified of being up-charged and sold something I don't actually need. WHAT HAPPENED: On 1/6 I was down in West Hollywood for a concert and started my car to my power steering locking and not working. I was terrified. After a while it started to drive fine and I was able to get home. It did it again this morning, therefore I knew I had to bring it to a mechanic. I researched high and low and came across reviews to this shop. I swung by right when they opened and they said they were packed but they'd try to diagnose it and see what's wrong and then perhaps fix it tomorrow. I was worried it could be a lot of things that ranged from $500-$600. I come back by, and they tell me it's only a small plastic piece that had no bearing in it and was far cheaper than I expected to shell out... and that they could replace it the same day. I asked them so many other questions about things wrong with my vehicle, and they were so patient and let me know what I actually needed versus what I actually didn't. I drove away almost crying happy tears because I wasn't getting ripped off and it felt like they actually cared about me. Try to book an appointment. Once again, they prove service as it should be. My 2009 Chevy Tahoe was overheating. They fixed it within a reasonable time frame treated me with respect. Then they found an oil leak. Let me know it was $700 to fix but it wasn't an emergency to do it right now but to keep the oil topped off and my engine will be fine. They did one more thing. They greased my driver door. It was sounding like a hoop tie mobile from the 60's. It was embarrassing to close the door and they fixed it. Yeah I get it 2 min and a little grease BUT SERIOUSLY WHO DOES THAT ANYMORE!?!?!? I am always leery of taking a car in for a inspection. We recently purchased a used PT Cruiser to be used for a tow car and we wanted it inspected before we agreed to purchase it. When we couldn't get in the AAA approved inspection Center I called to ask if Fruitvale Auto did inspections and they did so I took it there. They said everything was ok. They also did the oil change and replaced all our wiper blades. Update. We have only put a few hundred miles on the car and we took it back to Fruitvale automotive. We left it there a couple of weeks and said we smelled burning rubber. It needed costly repairs after the inspection so we let them do it. We continued having problems but we have lost trust in them so we took it to the dealer and they said it needs 1000 dollars work on the air conditioner and soon we will need 600 dollars work in the clutch. We bought the car after they said they did a thorough inspection so we didn't buy a lemon. I don't know what they did on the inspection but they didn't catch any of the problems we now have on this car. We are out lots of money read more

The service was amazingly friendly and personal. They had to run several diagnostics on my car to find out what the problem was and it took them nearly all day to finally figure it out. The cost of repairs would have been more than the car was worth so he advised against any repairs but gave us another potential option that could help to fix the issue for 50$ that we could buy at any auto parts store. Had never been here before, went because my father had somewhat decent experiences, even though they claimed their gas gauge was fixed and it wasn't fixed properly. That should've been a sign not to go, against better judgement I took my vehicle into Shane, signed the document that stipulated a check up fee of $105, Shane called me the next day and said they checked the ventilation system, I'm unsure why because the issue I'm having is with the fuel sending unit not reading correctly. When he called he said they would check the fuel pump next, never mentioned anything about it being an additional charge. Then Whitney called on Friday morning saying they couldn't find an issue, and they checked the fuel sending unit and it's reading properly, and that I should just take it to Toyota and that he would call when the car was ready. Never called so I called around 430pm that day to see if I could pick it up before closing and he had forgot to call me sooner to tell me it was ready. Then when I checked out, they charged me $160, when I asked Whitney why it was more than what we had originally agreed upon, he said he wasn't sure of what kind of arrangement I made with Shane and would have to come back on Monday to discuss with him. I just stopped by and spoke to Shane and his excuse for charging me more (even though they didn't fix ANYTHING on my car) and he said, "ehh yeah, well that's why I called you." I let it go and just walked out because I feel like they're trying to take advantage of that fact that I'm a woman and think they can get away with charging me more, even though he never once mentioned anything about there being additional cost for anything. Unfortunate experience, and will never take my car there again. Be weary ladies! They claimed there was nothing wrong with my fuel sending unit and that it's reading accurately, but I've driven 75 miles and my gas gauge is still reading full. Sounds like a pretty apparent fuel sending unit issue that can easily be fixed by watching YouTube videos. read more

Shane is the man!!! I was in search for an automotive repair shop to address a chronic issue with my wife's Tahoe in which the radiator fan would ramp up full speed and remain on for minutes even after shutting the engine down. I had misdiagnosed the issue as being the coolant sensor and had replaced it multiple times over the course of a year and for the most part, the issue went away until recently. The issue then escalated to draining my battery and also shutting down my A/C so I imagined the issue was possibly electrical or even worse, a computer issue. I yelped shops and came across Fruitvale and saw all the great reviews stating how Shane and his people where honest people with integrity and a great shop for any repairs so I thought I'd give them a shot. Reviews were spot on!! I barely drove up to the shop and hadn't gotten out of my car when Shane approached me and told me my thermostat was bad. I challenged him quickly and asked if it wasn't the coolant sensor and he immediately and patiently explained why it wasn't and continued to advise what other symptoms my vehicle maybe experiencing which where also on point. Even better yet, after hearing my stories about how I had previously replaced the coolant sensor in my attempt to address the issue, he advised that I shouldn't waste my money on paying him or any other shop to do a job I could do on my own and encouraged me to tackle it on. I did just that and Shane saved me a couple hundred bucks in labor which I'm greatly appreciative of. Definitely recommend this shop to all.
