A modicum of caution kept me from doing so and only decreased my enjoyment of the place marginally. Mercado Hidalgo is that bustling market that sells pretty much every sort of (Mexico-adjacent) food one can imagine as well as a wide assortment of other things. It's picturesque, stimulating, and colorful and I'm not sure we have anything equivalent in the US. All the more reason to visit. I walked out with Mexican candy (a safe bet) and a brain full of images of this large place knowing that I'll settle - a bit sadly - for a state-side Shrimp Cocktail now that I'm back at home.
An amazing array of groceries, sweets, meals, clothes, and tchotchkes. Definitely worth a visit.
Hot sauce anyone? This array is jaw-dropping!

Great little spot our Airbnb host recommended for some authentic gorditas. I love the way these…read morerestaurants work -- you order some food, eat it, order more if you want it, wash, rinse, repeat. It makes for easy eating! There are great meat and meatless options here. I went with papas and nopales, while my husband went with chicken and beef. Also on the recommendation of our Airbnb host, we both tried the Boing! juice in mango and it was delicious. It's made with real fruit, so there's nothing artificial in it. Well worth a taste! Our food was made fresh and came out fairly quickly and was a perfect little meal to start the afternoon. We'll definitely come back during our next visit.
