The Frutteria Latini Carlo e Maria is one of two major fruit and vegetable stands in the Mercati d'Autores at Piazza Alessandria.
(Mercati d'Autores means a certain legal kind of farmers market. Mercato Nomentano is the exact name of this market.)
The competing big fruit and vegetable place fills both sides of one aisle.
Carlo and Maria Latini's place looks like it is just two stands next to each other, but they have spillover places and storage in the back that you notice on closer examination.
Our landlady strongly recommended the Latini stand over the competition, and because she and Maria go way back, to do our business with Maria. You could probably go with whoever you see at the stands (plural since they have two right next to each other one for fruit and one for vegetables).
The merchandise at Carlo e Maria's place is to die for.
All the produce was excellent ...
But I will point out one subtle plus it is possible to miss.
At the back of one stand, they have farmer's eggs that have been laid the same day.
Not refrigerated.
Packed with flavor.
Just the eggs alone make Carlo e Maria's place a must visit if you are cooking.

One sad note.
I consider myself a good cook - but I cook in America where I get standard American mass produced supermarket groceries.
Those don't have too much flavor.
So my cooking tricks involve strong sauces and add-ons.
Tomato paste. Chipotle chiles. Barbecue Sauce. Curry etc.
Roman groceries need no help.
They are perfect just the way they are.
But this means you have to cook them right to catch them just at the peak of their flavor.
All the French cookbook tricks, and all the Larousse Gastronomique guides to professional culinary technique now totally apply.
These groceries are better than I ever will be as a cook.
The parts of the items I did not ruin had marvelous taste.
And my tricks of using flavor enhancers worked beautifully
Since Italian wine, Italian cold cuts and Italian tomato passata are amazing flavor enhancers.
There are enough wonders in any Italian supermarket or mercato to cover up the worst of your amateur first-week-in-the-kitchen newbie wreckage jobs.
But cooking with care, attention and thought will be highly rewarded
When you are working with magnificent ingredients like these. read more
