I recently visited Fry the Coop, a friend had highly recommended this spot. It was a Monday afternoon and it wasn't crowded. A few patrons were at a couple tables and a couple we're waiting for their take out orders. I ordered the chicken tenders which came with fries and I also ordered the mac n cheese. Our server let me know that they were out of mac n cheese. This is odd to me because the restaurant was going to be open another 7 + hours and didn't have what I would consider to be a fan favorite. So I just ordered the chicken tenders that came with fries. My friend ordered the same as well. The server put in our order. The server comes back a few minutes later to inform us there are no fries either. The other options were potato salad or coleslaw. Now I'm baffled at the fact that they didn't have mac n cheese and fries. How do you not have those items during lunch hour? I had the mild chicken tenders, they were ok. Nothing to write home about. The potato salad and coleslaw were not great. The atmosphere had a cool vibe that was the only thing this spot had going for them and the fact that I like Pipeworks beer and thought it was cool they had a beer called Chicken vs Unicorn. I would not go back, so many other spots in the area that have a cool vibe and there service and food are better. read more

We did a to go order from here so I'm sure the food is even better if you dine in. We both had Nashville chicken sandwiches and a side of seasoned fries and Mac and cheese. Both Sandwiches were really good one medium and one mild and held up well on the ride home. They had a good amount of pickles and the slaw didn't make them soggy. The fries actually stayed warm from the restaurant to the house but I'm sure they are best eaten hot the restaurant. The Mac and cheese has me ruined I will have cravings for this. Hmmm... I wish I had like this place more, the menu looks fantastic and I was very excited for it. I had the Nashville sandwich and cooped it up, I wish I had gotten a spicier heat level. The chicken was juicy and coleslaw inside was ok. The bun was good. My friend had the spicy butter sandwich and I think i'll try that one next time. Got COVID takeout from here with my bf. We got the Nashville chicken sandwich (country heat level because i can't handle the heat), spicy butter chicken sandwich (medium heat level), and a side of seasoned fries. I thought both sandwiches were pretty small... My bf was disappointed how small his was because he has a big appetite. I ended up being satisfied with my size of sandwich and it filled me up. My bf said he could easily eat another one so sad about that and the price that matched the small sandwich. Straight to the point menu consists of four different sandwiches, chicken tenders, chicken & waffles and some sides. I would go with the Nashville Hot/ fried chicken, coop slaw, special sauce, bread & butter pickles on a brioche bun! You also pick the Heat Level.. be VERY careful because this is one of the only places where when they say HOT it's actually HOT. Prepare to start sweating; I couldn't imagine the "Insanity" to be honest. The Mac & Cheese is good but very small portion & I would skip the fries. A bit pricey but worth it. I have been here plenty of times by now. I have enjoyed each and every time very much! I always get the same thing, the nashville chicken sandwich; I do change up the spice level frequently though. When this place says its "hot", its freaking hot. so beware! But if you are up for the spice, its an awesome chicken sandwich, probably one of the best I have had. Among the best Nashville hot chicken sandwiches! I love chicken sandwiches and have tried all the heavy-hitters like Chic-Fil-A, PDQ, Boxcar Betty's, The Budlong, and many more local spots. This one is in my top 3 without a doubt. They have a few Chicagoland area locations, but I went to the Noble Square location near Chicago Ave & Ashland. I did not order ahead and did have to wait about 10 min for my order, but was not in a hurry and enjoyed the atmosphere of the place, despite there being no seating due to the pandemic. Looks like it will be a cool spot to eat (and drink - they have a bar), once everything opens back up fully. I got my sandwich and coleslaw and rushed home to eat it. I ordered the Nashville fried chicken sandwich ($10.50) and a side of coleslaw ($2.49). The chicken sandwich was fantastic, seriously a great quality piece of meat that was flavorful and not dry, plus the other toppings complemented the sandwich and were great additions. Spice level "medium - feel the heat" was accurate. Coleslaw was creamy-style which I prefer and was good but not out-of-this world. Staff was nice and the only issue I had was that they currently aren't accepting cash due to the pandemic, and that's my preferred way to pay for small expenses like lunches or dinners. Love the food at the Wells St. Market location, and I love the food here maybe even more. I've been here 3 times this year (mostly during the 'rona) and had a great meal each time, with chicken tenders and sammies that I love as much as my kids do. Get a honey fried chicken sandwich because it'll be one of the best decisions you'll ever make when craving chicken. Trust. Move on over Nashville! I found a new favorite! My friends know I'm a huge fan of Nashville Fried Chicken and a good spicy challenge. They came here and said I had to try the Crazy Nashville Fried Chicken Sandwich. So here I went... with my hubs as witness. You seat yourself after you order and the order is in the back of the restaurant. Past the bar. (I made the mistake of walking up to the bartender). The person taking my order was hilarious. She looks at me and wanted to make sure I was certain about my Crazy order. She gave me a sample of the seasoning on french fry and watched my reaction. When I gave her the thumbs up, she placed my order. Side note: I appreciated this cause there are people who might order the heat and not be able to handle said fire. Before walking away from the cashier, guess how many chickens are on the wall. There's a competition and I got it wrong. My order was the Nashville Fried Chicken sandwich, heat level crazy. My husband ordered the medium as a meal (fries and drink). And we added a side of mac and cheese. If you're able to handle ghost pepper and carolina reaper, this sandwich is for you. The heat level is hot but the spice doesn't over power the flavor of the chicken. The chicken had a nice crunch but not overly greasy like how some fried chicken can get. The sandwich is served on a pillowy bun topped with cool coleslaw, and pickles. Writing this review is making me hungry again.... French fries is french fries. Mac and cheese was good. This place came as a recommendation to me by a friend who has deemed himself a Chicago chicken expert. I must say, I think he's onto something... Their chicken is amazing, incredibly tender and flavorful. My fan favorites is their Spicy Butter Fried chicken sandwich. It is such a simple sandwich with no toppings other than honey butter which allows for the chicken to be the star of the show. It's a healthy portion size to allow you room for one of their yummy sides. You must get their seasoned fries, they are so delicious I would come here for them alone. I have also tried their chicken tenders and they are spectacular as well. The chicken stays moist while the coating is crunchy and well seasoned. I got the hot heat level which I will say was a bit beyond (a bit is being modest, it was HOT) my spice abilities. If you are questioning whether to get the medium or hot, I would say place it safe with the medium! All around, this place is great. I have ate in their charming little restaurant and I've ordered out and both experiences were wonderful. I'm very happy I've given them a try and they have expanded into the city! The first time I got food from here it was A+. The other day, I'd say B+. The chicken was just way overcooked (like, part of it was so tough I just couldn't eat it). But the first two times I had Fry the Coop (once from here and once in Elmhurst) that wasn't the case so I'm hopeful this was a one-off. Also the first time I asked for extra spicy butter with my sandwich, I didn't get it (or maybe they put it on the sandwich?) but this time I specified I wanted the butter on my sandwich as usual, but the extra I wanted on the side. And they gave it, and it's delicious. So yeah, bring your fat pants and ask for extra spicy butter. So, I'll stick with 4 stars and hope next time is better than the last but I definitely recommend this place. Since HBFC has been closed during the pandemic, it's nice to have options for my fried chicken sandwich cravings. read more

Stopped by for lunch takeout, after waiting for months in anticipation. The folks were nice and the service was fast, which I appreciated. I got an order of medium tenders, to get a feel for the spice range, and some fries. I know, it's about the sandwiches, but I wasn't feeling a whole sandwich. The menu in the restaurant doesn't have prices at this point in time, but a plate of tenders runs around $13.00, which is a lot for three tenders unless they're exceptional. These were dry as a desert, with a fried-hard coating of what mostly tasted like cayenne pepper - definitely more than medium, and I'm someone who eats mapo tofu extra spicy. I think the heat was just a misstep, but the tenders had no actual flavor besides the cayenne. Not juicy, not delicious - just dry and hot, which is absolutely not worth $13.00, even with fries. The fries were better than the chicken, but still not worth a trip. It might be growing pains, or an undertrained lunch shift in the kitchen. But at the moment you can go to Popeyes and get more chicken of a much better quality for much less money, and I would recommend you do so rather than go to Fry The Coop. The staff is nice and this shouldn't reflect on them - but I give FTC Chicago Ave one star, because based on my experience there is not a single reason to eat there over fast food chicken. read more

Fry the coop is a pretty new, quiet spot on chicago ave. They have a full bar, with a whole lot of malort!! The menu is pretty small and simple, the chicken is the star. I went with the chicken and waffles. The waffles had pieces of bacon in it, which was great. I got medium, but I feel "hot" would have been perfect balance of spice and flavor. My roommate lives on the wild side and went with "crazy" which is not too spicy but not my taste. The syrup and honey butter were the best things on the plate to me, and covered everything in it for that sweet/savory goodness. I feel fry the coop is a nice quiet friendly spot to come watch the game, have some malort. The chicken is good, but prb just slightly better then average. They do use a dry rub which I'm indifferent about at this time. But I do know there are better options in chicago for hot chicken. The great deals on beer/shot combos and the fact I live pretty close will prb mean I will be back again! read more

We've been waiting for Fry the Coop to open for a while and were finally able to stop in for lunch earlier this month. We ate at the bar and the workers were super nice and friendly. My boyfriend and I split the Nashville Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Spicy Butter Fried Chicken Sandwich. I liked the Nashville better than the Spicy, but both were good. It just depends on if you prefer special sauce or spicy honey butter. I think splitting is a good idea, so you can try two different flavors and have some variety. The sandwiches are a good size and the chicken is moist. I don't enjoy things that are too spicy, so we got one mild and one medium. I thought the medium was pretty spicy. The flavor was good, but the heat builds up after a few bites. The mild wasn't really spicy at all. My boyfriend found the heat level descriptions to be accurate and helpful. We'll definitely be coming back. It's a fun restaurant with a full bar and nice servers. read more

I've always been a chicken sandwich fan, and recently have made a legitimate effort to try the best chicken sandwiches throughout Chicago. I can say, definitively, that fry the coop is the best chicken sandwich I have ever had the pleasure of eating. The exterior of the chicken is so crispy without being thick or bread-y, yet the chicken meat on the interior remains juicy/tender. I admittedly don't eat the spiciest levels (I tend to just go with medium), but the spice component of the chicken never overpowers the overall taste or flavor of the sandwich, and if anything accentuates it. The sides are tasty as well, and this location actually has a full bar with fair beer prices. I was also lucky enough to meet the owner, Joe, as he was serving behind the bar upon my first visit here, and he was very welcoming and engaging. I will continue to come back here, probably often. read more

Just opened up in West Town, and boy are we glad it is here. They have amazing food, great service, and the perfect casual atmosphere. They brought a mix of Nashville decor (neon signs) and West Town decor (old photos on the wall of Chicago Avenue). There is a full service bar, or you can order at the counter and they bring it to your table/wrap it up to go. We each got the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich and started with Mild, but will likely spice it up a bit more to medium next time. It was an amazing sandwich, juicy chicken, and great coleslaw/pickle topping on a fresh bun. We also got Mac n cheese (has some spice in there too), cheese fries, and potato salad. Went there last week with some friends. Most of us ordered the Nashville Chicken Sandwich - Medium and it was seasoned really well, not too spicy. The chicken was very juicy and breading not too thick. The sauce and coleslaw they add to the brioche bun also compliments the heat nicely. Had the Mac and cheese as a side, had a nice little spicy to it and was super cheesy. My brother had the chicken and waffles which definitely looked like the best dish if you didn't feel like a sandwich! I'll be coming back again for sure read more
