I have been coming here for years and always bring friends along! Now let's get something straight.... the thing to get is the Nashville hot chicken of course; however, those that know, know that Nashville check is very different. This comment is not to discourage anyone from coming (hence my 5 star review) but lets not hype something up for the sake of it. The chicken is in fact, very solid and if you want it spicy, it can get VERY spicy. I have honestly always had a pleasant experience coming here and always know what to expect! I have pretty much tried most things on their menu and various spice levels and its great every single time. The chicken is always crispy (but not too crispy to the point where it hurts your teeth...) and always juicy. It is a fast food place but it is certainly not your usual chains that sell chicken. I think that at the very least, if you really like spicy and chicken, to give this a try. but be warned...as someone who LOVES spice, it can in fact get real spicy, real quick. read more

I've been to this place many times and I've come to the conclusion that you should NOT get takeout. Food quality goes way down. I spent $17 on a sandwich and fries. Fries were dried out and they gave me fry scraps it seemed. On a different occasion I got the tenders for takeout and they were dry. The oven/heater that they store their food dries it out. My dine in experience is 5 stars but giving 3 stars because if you can't offer quality take out, don't offer it. read more

Although there was a strong craving for this restaurant, it was a last minute decision to visit. It's always very busy and parking is limited. We literally made it twenty minutes before closing. They no longer allow inside ordering but instead have a cut-out window. They are very organized and pretty fast considering your food is cooked to order. Love that special freshness. This is the best Nashville Spicy chicken Sandwich I ever had! I have been meaning to try Fry the coop for a while and I am so glad I got to today! The flavor, portion, and service were all great! I also thought the interior decoration was so neat. My boyfriend got the Nashville fried chicken sandwich in the hot flavor - the staff explained to us that the hot flavor is with the habanero and ghost pepper flavoring. The bun was so soft and buttery and the cole slow acted as the perfect agent to mitigate the heat from the flavoring. We are normally accustomed to hot, spicy food, but this was still delightfully painful. I would recommend it to people who have really high tolerance for spicy. We also got the Chicken and waffles in the medium flavor-- the staff told me most people get 'mild' or 'medium' flavor. The medium flavor was more bearable and tasteful for me. The waffle was made with bacon and sugar-which paired well with the spicy tenders that came with it. The chicken was juicy and we enjoyed every bite of it. The Nashville fried chicken sandwich from Fry the Coop is the best chicken sandwich I've ever had! It's also probably the largest chicken sandwich I've ever had. The coleslaw and pickle combo works so well with the juicy fried chicken. The brioche bun is perfectly soft, but not soggy despite the sauce on it. There was quite a bit of sauce dripping action going on when I first picked up the sandwich, but the whole thing held together surprisingly well with each bite. I went with the mild spice and it was just right for me- not spicy at all, just pure flavor. A lot of customers were here to pick up their orders to go, but I think this is more of a dine-in place, so you can eat the chicken while it's still hot. Another thing I like about here is that they have iced tea, in true Southern fashion, in addition to the usual sodas. It's the kind of spice that lingers in your mouth the whole time you eat. The coleslaw on the sandwich balanced out the heat. The cashier told me they put habaneros in the medium spice and ghost peppers and habaneros in the hot spice. The inside is nice and casual. I went in the evening and didn't have to wait to be seated. The young lady taking our order didn't seem enthused and kind of barked at us the the whole time during the order taking/questions. Never a smile or a thank you. But hey, maybe the food is great?! I ordered the Nashville Fried Chicken Sandwich with a mild spice level and I "Cooped it up" to add seasoned fries and a drink. I also added a side of macaroni salad. I thought the chicken sandwich was fantastic and it had the perfect amount of spice for me. The season fries definitely had more of a kick to them but they are tasty if you enjoy spicy. I tried Fry the Coop for the first time and enjoyed it. From the multiple spice levels for my Nashville chicken sandwich, I chose hot, which was perfect for me. It had just the right amount of kick to it to give me that Nashville hot chicken experience without overwhelming my taste buds. I knew from other reviewers descriptions that medium wouldn't cut it for me. Though I enjoy spicy foods, I see no reason to try any hotter on my next visit (which will happen). The chicken breast itself was big and moist on a nice brioche bun with tasty sauce and pickle. I had the pleasure of eating at Hattie B's in Nashville and had a "basket" meal there, which was worth the long wait. I would say Fry the Coop was my best chicken "sandwich" ever. I can't see myself eating at a Popeyes ever again. The seasoned fries were ok, and the Mac and cheese was very good and tasted almost identical to Panera's - same shaped Mac also. I'm pretty sure this is the best Nashville Hot Sandwich I've had. The buttery brioche bun, creamy cole slaw, heat from the spicy blend of cayenne, black pepper and who knows what. .. meld to create a perfect sandwich. I came in during their first month of business and they actually ran out of chicken, lol. The owner gracefully apologized and offered a credit for 2 sandwiches and an order of Chicken n' Waffles. That had to be a year ago. After finally making my way back, I wasn't sure they'd still honor my credit. They did without hesitation and now I've found my new go to for Nashville Hot. Their Chicken n' Waffles are in the running for best ever too. The bacon filled waffle alone is enough to trek to Oak Lawn. Now I didn't try the macaroni salad (or understand why any one would) so I can't attest to that being top notch, but I read a review saying it wasn't good. However I can say. ..if they open more convenient locations for Chicagoans, it'll be really tough for Roost and other Nashville Hot restaurants to compete. read more

So here's the thing... when this spot opened up in Oak Lawn a number of years ago, it was fantastic. Big, juicy flavorful chicken sandwiches that were cooked to perfection and served with fresh coleslaw on a buttery brioche bun. The fries were crisp and fresh, and the owner was on site - asking about your meal. "Nashville Hot Chicken" wasn't a thing in Chicago, and even much less of a thing in the south burbs. This was before Popeyes turned the industry upside down with their stellar chicken sandwich, which forced all the other fast food chains to raise up their chicken sandwich game. This was also before Raising Canes came to town with their juiced up chicken fingers and signature dipping sauce. And yet, Fry the Coop was right there, amidst this fried chicken revolution, opening new stores and riding the wave..... About 6 months ago we ordered carry-out from the Oak Lawn Fry the Coop, and it was definitely not up to par. Soggy fries... an unimpressive chicken breast that had been left in the fryer for waaayyy too long, and was 1/2 the size that it used to be. Maybe I just hit them on a bad day?!? It did leave a bad enough taste in my mouth (pun intended) for me to put them in the penalty box. After all, there are so many options now for really good fried chicken. Well today the office wanted Fry The Coop for lunch, and it had been some time, so we went back to see if they had turned it around. Unfortunately, I think it's gotten worse. This is compounded by the fact that they've significantly raised their prices. $11.99 for a chicken sandwich is crazy, but $11.99 for a dry, small overcooked chicken breast is terrible. Also, I know french fries don't travel well. The person that figures out how to deliver a hot french fry that retains some crispiness when being delivered is gonna make a fortune. Even worse are when the fries are so greasy that they basically gel together in the bag, forming a oily gelatinous mess. These were fries we were served from Fry The Coop today. So do yourself a favor and save your $$ and pick from one of the dozens of better fried chicken options when craving your next hot, oily hen! Seriously, the chicken rings from White Castles are better than the chicken I had today from Fry the Coop. read more
