As the restaurant that invented this dish, it is undoubtedly very popular, typically having a wait of ten to fifteen minutes during the lunch rush. This location has a very quaint outdoor patio that is often frequented by street musicians, resulting in an awesome and authentic vibe. Everything moves fast and efficiently here, so don't expect a period to chat with waiters or get a ton of attention. Order quick, get food quick and savor the moment. Now, when it comes to the food. I did not see a single brave soul attempt to eat a lomito with their hands: forks and knives were the tools required for this sandwich due to the sheer size. That in itself is a bit nuts since it defeats the general purpose of a sandwich, but who am I to judge. Locals and tourists alike love these beastly creations. The pork inside is tasty and tender, complimented perfectly by avocado. They even have a lager on draft. There is really nothing to complain about and without trying other lomito spots, I cannot fully compare. Personally, I cannot say that this sandwich blew my mind or will make me crave lomitos. It's a good dish that I can happily eat any day, but the struggle of not being able to enjoy both bread and filling in one bite was a bit distressing and I can't say that I'd rush here to get another one. read more

I read many best of lists before my trip to Santiago that claimed this is a must-stop eatery in Santiago, despite the name meaning "German fountain". It definitely felt like an authentic local place with many Chileans eating inside, including families and people just off work. The place is set up like a diner or soda fountain (hence the name), which I really liked. The service and food was not amazing, but it definitely felt authentic. I got a Churrasco sandwich, which was huge and very messy. I tried to eat it by picking it up, like a normal sandwich, but struggled. I noticed many locals eating it with a fork and knife, which was definitely the better option. I would recommend a stop at this place. The food was pretty good and there menu is filled with many local favorites. It's definitely not a place to go out and eat but perfect for a midday meal or late night snack! read more

This place is a "Santiago Institution" and truly legit. Discovered this sandwich Mecca through Anthony Bourdain who dined here for his tv show No Reservations. After dining at a bunch of really touristy spots in Santiago, Fuente was a breath of fresh air. We came here at 14:30 (2:30pm) on a Friday afternoon and this place was PACKED. Instructions for ordering for people who are clueless like me: 1) Scan the diner and look for people who are about finished and stand directly behind them. 2) Once the diners get up, swoop on their seats as fast as possible. 3) Order your sandwich & drinks 4) Stuff your face with food & drinks 5) Ask for the receipt 6) Pay at the cashier 7) Go back to your original seat and pay for tip in the tip box Here's what my hubs and I shared: Lomito completo: pork tenderloin with homemade sauerkraut + tomatoes + copious amounts of mayo - The pork was tender / juicy & thinly sliced - Sauerkraut was delicious (I'm normally not a fan, but it was the perfect complement to the richness of the rest of the sandwich) The sandwich is freaking huge and impossible to eat without a fork and knife. The dining experience felt rushed, mostly because everyone waiting is breathing down your neck with drool in their mouths. Definitely would recommend trying this place out! read more

We were happy to find Fuente Allemana just down the street from our hotel on our first day in Santiago. As all the other reviews say, it's a hectic place at lunchtime. You just have to mill around until some seats open up. The people working behind the counter speak no English but they point and smile a lot to help you order. I tried my best to decipher the menu on the board but ended up just following recommendations from other Yelp reviews. We ordered a lomito completo (grilled sliced pork, tomato, sauerkraut, lots of mayo) and a churrasco Italiano (grilled sliced beef, avocado, lettuce, tomato). I never saw the word Italiano on the menu but they knew what I wanted when I said it. Both sandwiches are served on a soft white roll. They're huge. Two sandwiches were plenty for four people. There's not much in the way of spice so the sandwiches are kind of bland. I preferred the churrasco because the beef was a little salty, which really complemented the avocado. Another post on yelp shows mayo on this sandwich but I don't recalled there being any on ours. The lomito was good, just not particularly special. With 4 bottles of water, our meal came out to about $23 equivalent, which seems a bit on the expensive side but being our first day in Santiago, I don't yet have any comparison. I'm glad we tried Fuente Allemana but I'm not planning to make a special return trip until I've tried other options. read more

this place is good for what it is - no frills fast food, huge portions, good bang for your buck. however it's not really my thing, but i can appreciate that it caters to a certain type of lunch craving and recognize that it's good value for your pesos. got the lomito italiano without mayo (chileans eat a TON of mayo!) and cheese - was surprised when it came with sauerkraut, but guess i should've known since the place is german. there seems to be some inconsistencies depending on who in the kitchen is making your particular sandwich. our group of 10 mostly ordered lomito completos or lomito italiano. of the ones who had lomito italiano, some had avocado while others had this weird green bean mash. some had sauerkraut and others did not. it was really strange that the same sandwich could have so many interpretations within the same place, so found this to be a little surprising in a bad way. since i got mine without mayo or cheese, the sandwich overall was a little on the plain side. here is where the avocado really came in to help carry the taste. but overall, probably could've used a little more spice or something to flavor the meat. fyi, their "spicy" sauce in the red bottles are not really spicy at all, just very salty. would recommend trying it first before putting it on your sandwich. there are a LOT of people working as part of the overall kitchen - it's a bit amusing to watch them in action since there's such a bustle of activity behind the counter. come a little on the early side to avoid lunch rush - we got there around noon and half the place was empty. by the time we left, it was packed with a line of people waiting by the counter to order food and pay. read more

I had a one day in Santiago, stop over in route to Patagonia, and I'm super excited to have discovered this place on Yelp! My brother and I ordered the Lomito Completo and Lomito Italiano. The Italiano was good but the Completo was mind blowing! Homemade creamy mayo, sauerkraut, and tomato paste sauce combined with sizzling meat was a surprising explosion of flavor. No wonder Anthony Bourdain featured this spot on his show. A few tips: 1. Self service seating so stand behind folks that look like they're finishing to grab their spot 2. Order the Lomito Completo 3. Pay at the cashier when done and tip! 4. It gets crowded so try to go at off hours. Dinner is Santiago is typically at 9pm. I've been eating a smaller portion for over a month, so this was a BOMB! the size of their sandwiches is massive...mainly because they are way too generous with the amount of all they put inside. I was shivering by the end of my lomito simple (just pork meat and very little mayo). Yes, chileans do eat obscene portions of mayonnaise, so make sure to ask for just a bit or none at all. I can't imagine if I had ordered it with avocado! The place is usually full, so make sure you have patience to wait for an empty spot. After you eat, ask for the ticket, pay and then handle it back to the person who attended you. They deserve the tip! read more
