While going here last night, the food came out fast- service was decent. The ambiance was okay. But when the check came and I paid with card and left a cash tip, the server came back (mind you, not even the one who was our server) and said "no tip? And left the checkbook open to show it" and before I could say anything or even point to the money on the table she walked away. I was appalled. I've never had this happen in the 10 years I've been going here. I didn't realize they don't accept cash tips. After coming here a few times I just had to leave a review. You walk in and the restaurant is super clean, well decorated and all the employees are super nice. The sushi is next to none! The prices are incredible especially during lunch time where you can get a roll combo c which is two traditional rolls and one designer roll for only $23. Upstairs, you can sit at the sushi bar or grab a table for a date or dinner with friends or family. Downstairs the vibes are more bright and energetic with the hibachi tables and fun, friendly chefs. My brothers always pick this place for their dinners to celebrate and for me it's nostalgic. My only gripe is that with my takeout order this shrimp tempura roll had barely any shrimp in it. The outside looks like a typical place, actually a place you would find in NC by the beach. I ordered a few rolls. Their specialty rolls. I believe the firecracker, cowgirl, and Philly premium. I will say they were very good. I also ordered the spicy salmon and shrimp tempura, which were ok. The atmosphere was phenomenal, beautiful, not like you would expect from the outside. The people inside were very nice, service was perfect, not overbearing or unseen they know what they are doing and check in as needed. If you are looking for sushi this is a good place. I highly recommend what they call designer rolls, because they are great. The classics are ok but not as good as other places. I definitely enjoyed it and will go back and try hibachi. read more

I don't frequent hibachi options often, but this was a nice experience. We had reservations, but arrived about 30 minutes early.. I don't recall waiting too long to be seated, which was nice. Clean and a decent layout in the dining area. I like that it isn't as bright as other places I've been to. Friendly staff.. a little rushed, but pleasant. Lively atmosphere and pretty packed on a Saturday night.. BYOB. My daughter ordered the kids chicken with fried rice which gave her a nice amount of food, which she enjoyed. I ordered a scallop and salmon combo that comes with both fried rice and lo mein. It was all tasty, except the salmon was a little overcooked. Scallops were perfect. We shared a bunch of Apps.....Veggie Gyoza, Beef Negimaki, Rock shrimp, Edamame, tempura shrimp and veggies, and citrus scallops....VERY Good! The owner and his wife both are here every night so nice and courteous , he does the birthday thing and nails it every time . Kids loved it the chefs were so funny and friendly...and cooked my filet perfect , getting hungry just thinking about the food. I have been to at 50-60 Japanese Hibatchi places and THIS is the best. Food and service were subpar tonight but that's what I get for trying new things but, the Karai Chirashi was disappointing. It did not look anything like pictures online or the chirashi I'm used to receiving from other restaurants. Our waitress was short with us and never came back after she took our order, so I couldn't even express my concerns, get a drink refills or soy sauce for my sushi. With that being said, we are regulars and love the owners. They are kind, very respectful and always remembers us. I went downstairs to the hibachi restaurant with a friend of mine. There were about a dozen people including kids sitting at three different hibachi stations. I n believe there are eight hibachi stations with ten chairs around each station. My friend and I were seated at a empty hibachi station. Just the two of us. The waiter took our order and as we're waiting for our ice teas and soup; the hostess seats a family of six at our hibachi station. The family was a mom and dad with their four kids. There were other stations that were empty the family of six could have been seated. Now it's been at least fifteen minutes and they finally brought out some chips and duck sauce for dipping. My friend looked at me and I looked at him, and we both knew we were not going to wait any longer. Nor were we willing to sit next to strangers at the same station. That must be how hibachi places operate. It was Thursday around five o'clock. There's no excuse for putting six people at the same station as where two people ate sitting. Furthermore, the prices are outlandish. The cheapest dinner was $33. I wouldn't mind paying that much; but I'm not eating with strangers with kids. I raised four kids by myself and I sure as hell didn't want my going out to dinner be surrounded by four kids who aren't my kids. I won't be going back to the hibachi part of Fujiyama. I love people; just not strangers sitting right next to me at the same table. If I'm going to pay $35+ for a meal, plus appetizers, plus drinks, plus gratuity then I want to enjoy my meal, and sit with my family or friend not someone else's family. read more

I visited Fujiyama while in Hackettstown, NJ, celebrating my little sister's Sweet 16. Coming from Miami, we were excited to enjoy a hibachi experience, but unfortunately, this restaurant did not live up to expectations. Upon arrival, we were made to wait 30-40 minutes to get started because they sat another family at our table first--despite us being there beforehand. Once service began, the hibachi chef displayed clear bias in portioning. The other family received significantly larger portions while my plate was noticeably skimped. I ordered steak and lobster, yet received only tiny pieces of lobster, while a child from the other family was given at least eight large pieces. The chef always served them first, leaving my sister and me last each time. Even with the vegetables, I was only given zucchini and one piece of broccoli, while the other guests were given a full variety. To make matters worse, the shrimp was burnt and tough to chew. On top of the disappointing meal, the restaurant charges for drink refills without any clear disclaimer, while constantly pressuring guests to get more refills. While the ambiance was nice and the staff was decent, the food was mediocre at best (3/10) and not worth the price. I'm shocked by the high reviews because our experience did not reflect that quality. Save your money and find a better hibachi spot. I rarely leave reviews, but I felt compelled to share this to help others avoid the disappointment we experienced. read more

While in town from North Carolina we ate here one night. The staff were extremely professional and proper. The manager even checked on our table a couple times to make sure we needed anything which was nice. So at sushi restaurants my girlfriend and I usually will get 1 roll of our own each snd split a specialty roll. At this sushi restaurant they have an awesome option that I wish more sushi places would adopt. Instead of getting the "chiefs choice for 2,4,8 people" they have different options on their specific rolls so you can choose for yourself and it comes out being pretty cheap. There were 3 of us eating sushi so we chose the option for 3 specialty rolls and 4 regular rolls ( about $50 ) which was a great price per roll. The 4th person with us and their 4 year old got the chicken teriyaki which I sampled and also thought was great. Perfectly sauced and cooked with noodles The specialty sushi rolls were fresh and delicious . Definitely would recommend this spot to people for sushi when visiting again read more

I made a reservation for Valentines day only to show up to find out they took walk in's before reservations leaving 50+ people waiting in a cold hallway for hours. The time we went we were harassed by the staff. The menu is so large we tried to read through everything. After her 5th time coming to us demanding an order in 5 min ( yes demanding, no questions. Just demanding what rolls we want) we just randomly picked some items from stress of her interaction. Very very rude server. It was the slowest time of the day and we were the only people around, what was the rush? Who knows. Sushi was okay we didn't really get to pick rolls we wanted due to the rush and we were kicked out the door so fast our heads spun. The owners are always pleasant & checks to ensure you are satisfied. Hibachi downstairs is a whole other story. 3 stars. When you check in at the front, there is not much of a welcome. No one seems to want to work tonight?! The hibachi room is the basement pretty much as there are no windows & the ventilation is not too great. Hibachi menu selections were great - lots of combo's to choose from. Waitress service was not great - seemed like she didn't want to be there. Had to chase her down several times. Dinner came with a tasty miso soup & an unforgettable salad. Chef had zero personality & did not really try to interact with us. Granted we were all adults but still. Steak was overcooked; shrimp and scallops were awesome. Large servings of tasty rice, noodles, & veggies. They don't give out the ginger sauce anymore. We love Fujiyama for our family's birthday celebrations. We recently visited for hibachi. We had a reservation for 5pm on a Wednesday during the winter holiday break. It was already busy when we arrived and by 5:45, the place was packed. It was super loud and very hot once all of the tables got going but I still love the clean modern ambiance of this place! The staff were very efficient and eager to move us along through the process. It's not a leisurely relaxing meal by any means. We loved the miso soup but the dressing on the salad was bland. We shared a couple of edamame appetizers and it was good. We all loved our hibachi dinners. Everything was cooked perfectly and according to our desired degree of doneness. The rice and noodles were flavorful. Our chef was very talented and entertaining. We each got a dessert. The volcano cheesecake was a hit but the fried green tea ice cream was not a success. The batter wasn't quite right and by the time it came out, it was very soggy. Our favorite part of the evening was when we sang happy birthday to my daughter with the help of the staff.
