Over…read morethe years my wife and I have cut our own, gone to various tree farms, and now with a toddler we wanted to keep it rolling. We saw Cedar Valley Forest and were stoked to try a new spot to get a fresh tree this year; their website shows hayrides, Santa, food trucks, cut-your-own local trees or pre-cut Frasier Firs, cookies, hot cocoa, a tree maze, pretty much the works if you ask me. Now the day we gutted out was just plain crappy weather. It was really cold, drizzly, and really just not pleasant, so maybe that factors in a bit here... but we were left a bit disappointed. There was no Santa which has me reliving some childhood trauma here. There were no food trucks. The tree maze didn't appear open for business. The walk from the parking lot to the forest was a muddy mess, and the grass connecting was basically a mini-river. :::At this point I think it's also safe to admit we might've been forcing the experience a bit::: We had to seek someone out to get some guidance on what we were doing, and they really couldn't have been nicer. Informative, warm and friendly all around. We walked the forest through some beautiful trees, although they were much too tall for our little house. Ended up with a pre-cut Frasier Fir from Michigan, and the crew told us they'd take care of everything, shake it, bag it, bring it up which was nice. I love the tree we picked, but it was about $10-$12 higher than the place we usually go to. We set up the tree which is a reliable way to have a Clark Griswold type of breakdown. We watered it with a gallon of water, but after 24 hours the water hadn't moved a millimeter. Reading about it, the tree needs a fresh cut to take in water and that is something the crew should've done when prepping our tree. So we had to take the whole freakin' thing down, go buy a bow saw, cut an inch off and re-do the process. Pretty frustrating. So if you go here, I hope your experience is better than mine, but it was pretty anti-climactic and I think I would've been better off popping over to a tree lot this year.

This X-Mas Tree farm is legitimately legit. If you live in KC, you have an excuse to spend a weekend day in Lawrence. If you live in Lawrence, it's just outside of town to the point where it feels like you're traveling for a tree without having to go far. We hunted for the perfect tree, seeing many that would do (especially compared to another farm we'd visited earlier that day that was full of patchy, dying trees). Some of these are h-u-g-e and wouldn't fit in our little house, so we found a 7.5 foot Fraser Fir, an import from the Appalachians that was well priced, fragrant, richly evergreen colored and the perfect fit for our house this Christmas season. Props to the staff who are decked out in red-vests so you can find them. They are friendly and helpful, and will guide you to a saw to cut your own if you'd like, or do it for you and haul it back via hayride. You then take a little ticket they give you inside, pay up, receive a customized "paid" stamp and pull your car around. The crew will shake the needles out, bag up your tree and strap that sucker down so it won't budge on the highway at 80 mph. Just a wonderful experience here and excited to work this into the holiday rotation for a stress free couple of hours on their farm.

We noticed with a bit of concern that after this year, they may need to sit a year or three out until the Charlie Browns grow to into Charles Schultzs). Let's say you want to be the big man or woman and chop down one of those suckers in front of your loved ones. Score! They have even saws for you. But let's say, you don't feel you need to cut down your own. Now, I'm not calling anyone names (me!) but conveniently enough for the *wusses,* I mean, tidy folk, they have trees that have been cut but are still upright and tied to a single pole (note: if kids under 5 are present, you can *pretend* you're cutting it down, how's that for win-win?!) They even have a guy offering hayrides to those who don't wish to carry the big tree 20 feet, (I mean one mile!) to check out. Waiting for you is hot cider and cookies for all that hard work you did while untying your tree from the stake and riding it in on the flatbed. There are also decorations, lights (beware, though, last year we were stuck with old ones that didn't work) and wreaths. And strapping young boys who are gonna shake your tree down and mummy that sucker up and tie it to your car.

If you're going down into the farm because you want the experience of cutting down your own tree, make sure to bring your own saw! The farm area is a pretty big and open field with lots of spaced out trees. It wasn't overwhelming at all, and they had lots of different sizes. When you go in to pay they have complimentary hot cocoa and hot cider, as well as wreaths to purchase if you want.

It is very easy to get to, the trees are reasonably priced, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It is a family-run business and the trees (Scotch Pines) are grown on the property. However, they do have some pre-cut Frasier Firs for sell. They also have all the supplies you will need to cut down and haul the perfect Christmas tree, free of charge. There is even free hot chocolate and cider and handmade wreaths available for purchase. Midland Holiday Pines is open 10am to 5pm the day after Thanksgiving, then every weekend until Christmas, 10am-5pm.

My dad made it a tradition to take my sister and I every year to find the perfect Christmas tree and we always had so much fun running around trying to find "the one!". My dad would cut the tree down and we would all carry it back together to put on top of our car. They have a HUGE selection of the most beautiful fresh trees. One of my favorite things about these tress is the way it filled the whole house with the fresh smell of pine. The past 3 years my husband and I have been in California so I couldn't partake in the family tradition which broke my heart but we moved back with our new baby girl and I can't wait to make this tree farm part of our little family tradition once again! They also have the most charming gift shop where you pay for your tree. My sister and I always loved walking around looking at all the fun stuff. We'd also always end up purchasing the most fragrant candles as well. The owner is the sweetest man and was always a joy to talk to.
