I was sent there when I was 17. I am 35 now. It was disgusting. Guys would watch us shower. They read our emails. It was the grossest thing and I need therapy from it. I hope it has changed. It was traumatizing. My roommate got pregnant by the gym teacher. It was gross. That's all. read more

This program caused me long-term complex trauma. I attended Fulshear Ranch as a 17-year-old, and I am deeply disturbed by the reply posted by the current director to Jessica R. In my opinion, that response speaks volumes about the program's integrity. The director's tone is invalidating, dismissive, and shockingly inappropriate given the seriousness of what former participants are describing. It also raises serious concerns about the program's hiring practices and its apparent distrust of young women who reported unwanted sexual attention or advances. And then, on top of that, for the director to comment on financial concerns in this kind of setting feels deeply inappropriate. When a program is responding to allegations of harm, trauma, and mistreatment, minimizing or reframing the issue around money is not just tone-deaf -- it reinforces the very lack of accountability survivors are trying to describe. read more

Fulshear was very helpful to myself and other girls I know who went through the program. I am grateful for the positive change they made in my life. HOWEVER, there are some glaring issues. This is most important as it was (is?) an ongoing safety issue for clients. Fulshear continued to employ a male who shall be nameless as a therapist on their clinical team even after we reported to them that he tried to initiate inappropriate physical contact with (at least) one client after leaving the program. He used the knowledge that these girls felt safe with him as "one of the good men" to flirt and try to initiate a dynamic that was nothing if not inappropriate. He knew what he was doing and picked somebody he thought wouldn't tell on him--and to his credit, she didn't say anything for almost a year. This behavior is predatory and if I were a parent I would not feel safe entrusting my daughter to an establishment he works at. We told them about this in November 2022 and he was still employed as of December 2022. He might still be there today (February 2023), too. In a typical client-therapist relationship providers are banned from all contact with clients for two entire years after the termination of the therapeutic relationship. At that point if both parties wish to embark upon a friendship or other relationship that is their choice. Fulshear does not adhere to that because they are a "highly relational" program. This can have its perks when staff are a positive influence on clients, but when staff abuse that privilege in an unethical manner they should face real consequences. When we reported this to the program we were assured that this matter would be taken seriously, and action would be forthcoming. The fact that they did not fire this unnamed man is appalling. We were told that they would be speaking to HR and it would be "handled appropriately". I could be wrong, but I believe this offense more than warrants termination. I am disappointed in Fulshear and their complete failure to act on this matter. *note: I originally included more details on other pertinent subjects but decided for the sake of brevity to remove that part of my review and leave only the largest issue--the safety issue.* read more

am almost one year out of fulshear and I am still doing amazing, even better than when I first got out. I think that the effectiveness of mental health programs is evaluated with the long term effects of its treatment and so I wanted to write another review 10 months later. Since graduating fulshear I have hit 2 years sober, a year and a half self harm free and I am starting college in the fall. I have had severe self harm for almost 10 years and I haven't relapsed despite being in environments with triggers. I have maintained going to AA meetings 3 times a week with a sponsor. I applied to college and was accepted into an honors program with a large merit scholarship. I am taking honors courses and am planning on joining choirs and acapella groups and doing service work. One year out of fulshear I am the strongest I've ever been. My life is finally starting and I am so happy to begin my future. I have had several bumps on the road including a relative getting terminal cancer and having a friend incarcerated and I have maintained sober and self harm free. I've been to many programs and I've found that after a couple months home I revert to my old behaviors, but I am the strongest both mentally and physically I've ever been. I have celebrated my 21st birthday with friends, created a community in a new state, and prepared for college. I also have gotten control of my health and diet and am the most in shape I've been in a long time without it being disordered. I even visited Texas and spoke at a family programming about my experience. I can't thank fulshear enough for have given me my life back. Every day i am grateful for the staff and treatment I received and the forever friends I made who I have flown to visit since being home. am almost one year out of fulshear and I am still doing amazing, even better than when I first got out. Posting because this might keep someone's child out of there. These reviews persuaded me to go so let me give you a real one. I was there almost a year before transferring to another facility before I got better. Here are the FACTS: *the psychiatrist DID NOT test my LITHIUM levels and I got so violently sick here. I would PERSONALLY request blood draws as they should have been taken EVERY 2-3 WEEKS for my kidneys sake. I was there for 8 months with it being bumped every time I reported I felt sad. NO BLOODWORK ORDERED. That is not how that drug works. My levels of lithium were so high I had to go to A DRUG AND ALCOHOL DETOX when I got transferred. YES. I was not on drugs and I am not an alcoholic I was just medically neglected. Google lithium and see how "amazing" this doctor is about to treat your child. If she does this with one of the most dangerous drugs in the book I personally wouldn't trust her. Staff tried to convince me I was making my symptoms of toxicity up for attention while I was vomiting and could barely keep my eyes open. 1. The ranch is run down and dirty. They rarely let people tour. Not like the pictures. RATS DEAD AND ALIVE. BUGS. MOLD. Cold showers. Barely functioning appliances. You'll still be persuaded to drop your daughter if you have traveled and flown all the way there. 2. Therapists don't know what they are doing. Many leave to go to other places. 3. Hardly any communication or trips to the outside world and when it does happen it's through a therapist (who most likely isn't going to handle that properly). You'll lose touch with reality on the secluded ranch. Say bye to your outside friends. They will move on. If you are lucky enough to get phone calls they will be screaming and crying to your parents for help until they cut them off. 4. Almost forced labor to get to next "level". BARLEY ANY actual riding of the horses. I was there for 8 months and it was rare for a RANCH. You will scoop sh!t to get to go to 5 below and be granted 5 dollars (most girls got food when we went). In the blazing hot or freezing cold. I hate horses now. 5. If your kid has an ED or allergy they don't care. I lost my hair and my period there. If you have a mold allergy you'll probably transfer if you are lucky enough. Funny how they prioritized vegetarians over someone with celiac disease. 6. You and your kid are gonna be brainwashed. Most kids go on suicide watch or literally run away at one point or another. Selfh@rm is SEVERE and su!code attempts happen. Staff is 'woke' and will teach your compromised kid their outside beliefs. Get ready for some identity changes. I was introduced to the term "g@y for the stay" here. Yep. S3x everywhere. And your daughter isnt doing it she will probably get to see it in live action due to the 3 girls in most rooms situation. *And no. Staff wont care. I saw multiple walk outs and I was assaulted by another patient after I had expressed my concern for my safety multiple times. They have aggressive girls and they don't like kicking people out. Girls will be on "their last strike" aka "probation" for their entire stay while they terrorize others. PLEASE save your money and save your child's trauma. PLEASE read the bad That would have saved 8 months of my life wasted rotting there while my parents broke into their savings to try to save my life. Could you believe that in just 90 days at the other facility they tried to tell me not to go to I got better? I'm glad I didn't "stick it out". Sincerely, a fulshear escapee read more

There is an extreme disconnect between staff and clients. The leads to polarization between the two groups which are supposed to have the same, or common goal in mind: to help clients with mental health issues work through their issues by guiding and teaching them on how to properly manage themselves and providing a safe environment to learn more about themselves, as well as to process difficult situations so they can learn how to better manage our episodes and mental health, reintegrate into society, become productive members of our communities, and ultimately live a better quality of life. It seems as though there is an inability to agree on basic facts and information, leading to believing and experiencing entirely different realities. This at its core is a fundamental problem because we have differing opinions based on different facts. Basically, we cannot agree on what is a fact, whether a chair is a chair or if it's a couch. We are all entitled to our own opinions, but we are not entitled to our own facts. In a perfect world, all staff applying to work in the mental health industry, especially this facility, apply with the intention of wanting to help people. They also apply knowing what they are getting themselves into; Fulshear is designed to treat severe trauma and manage serious mental disorders. But also wanting to help people and being able to help them are two completely different things. In addition, staff are human and experience compassion fatigue and frustration toward certain clients, circumstances, and situations. This is normal and should be worked through. Instead, staff seem to give up on individuals, begin to not care about them, and treat them differently based on their personal opinions of if they like said client or not based off of behavior not appropriately addressed, handled, and worked through, etc. And it will not get better; it will actually get worse when not responded to properly. There is a reason why clients act in certain situations and conflicts. At least in my case, I don't just act this way, but I will be pushed to because it's the only thing that 'works' or seems to garner attention. For example, instead of reacting to client behavior maybe try to see why or what is causing this. Inquire on what's wrong, try to actually get to know us and our past, and even how we think. To be able to work with different types of people, especially those you may not like or aren't your favorite is necessary in a job like this. We are still clients and are paying for a certain quality of care and support that staff are expected to maintain and provide. Ultimately, it leads me back to a basic AA saying: place principles before personalities. Things are escalated by staff when they fail and refuse to handle themselves properly in response and don't attempt to work with us. Staff act and respond like children when they feel insulted and take things personally when things are not even directed at anyone in particular. Because they are not trained in how to properly regulate their own emotions, it makes clients even angrier. Many of us don't have a history of safe communication or a space for it provided here. It is making habits and issues that we sought help for (or maybe even learned here) worse when in reality they need to remain calm and utilize skills to help and/or coach us through them. Staff lacks the skill set and education on how to provide proper care and support. They need proper experience before being hired and asked to assist in serious treatment. It also presents as a red flag to me that numerous staff have previously worked in the adult prison system as guards. We are not inmates. Previous training for that job, at the very least, remains in a person's subconscious. You can't just go from reading years of medical textbooks and watching surgeons operate to performing a kidney transplant on your own. That is not only ridiculous, but it is dangerous. These are our lives we're talking about - don't practice on us. Failing to provide proper support and care and treatment can, in some cases, be fatal. Additionally, staff are unable to separate personal and work life, bringing outside issues into work and projecting onto clients in attitudes, behaviors, and demeanor. Staff act and respond like children when they feel insulted and take things personally when things are not even directed at anyone in particular. Because they are not trained in how to properly regulate their own emotions, it makes clients even angrier. They have good staff, but they find reasons to get rid of them. Recently a male staff was let go and no reason was given but he was a breath of fresh air. He was treated badly because he was a male. Three people self-abused after he left and the staff didn't care. This place needs new administration and someone that cares about their clients. At least he cared. read more

I came to Fulshear in the end of July 2021 and had graduated the program in April 2022. To give a back story I've been in treatment since I was 13 years old and I'm now 23 years old. I have been to MANY different treatment centers over the years and Fulshear has been the most beneficial to me out of all of them! I had a really big co-dependency issue, OCD was at an ultimate high and truly destroying my life, struggles with depression and anxiety, and eating disorders, my biggest issue was me using drugs in order to cope with everything that I was going through and my past traumas. I've met many staff and many different clients during my stay, some life long friends I would like to say.(my current roommate is someone I attended the program with). I decided to stay in Texas after I had graduated the program for many reasons, the most important one was the connection I had made with the recovery community here while I was at the apartments. I still have my difficulties from time to time however Fulshear has taught me how to get through them on my own. I went through intensive treatment with my therapist David (who has been the best therapist I've worked with!) we worked on EMDR in order to work through my traumatic experiences and over 10 years of having to cope with a traumatic experience and going through multiple treatment centers, DAVID was the one who helped me actually process through it all and come to terms. We worked on mood regulation and it's scary how good Im with it now, my emotions no longer control me! With 10 years of going through treatment facilities, this program WORKS. However, with that being said it only works if you work it. If you want to change, it you are willing to put in the difficult work in order for a better outcome. Sadly, I am the only one from the program during my stay to have stay sober after graduating, my sobriety has been the biggest blessing and life lesson I have ever gone through and without Fulshear it wouldn't of been possible for me to say that. Many of the reviews that I read are from past clients who's priorities were not in their treatment and in result they ended up having the leave the program or were not given an influential graduation. This is due to them using while in the program, not following simple guidelines, like not sneaking out and sleep around with random people in return for drugs or alcohol. My roommate had been drinking for 3 months straight without my knowledge and it was really difficult to have to experience this while trying to stay sober, however Fulshear helped me push through. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who is willing to put in the work to change! read more

When I first got to Fulshear, I had previously been in two other programs for mental health. First one did amazing work for my relationship with me family, and the second one helped me find a ton of balance with my disordered eating and continued my work with my family. When I arrived to Fulshear, I knew it would be a long ride for finding recovery from past traumas and then getting the help and guidance I needed with my alcohol abuse. The 11 months spent in Fulshear gave me peace, clarity, answers, and support with all my battles. I was able to graduate with a happy heart and the feeling of accomplishment. Now, it took 5/6 months of intense work on the Ranch, and about another half a year of continued therapeutic and experiential work at the apartments, but even on my darkest days, I felt safe, heard, and understood. I was blessed with a great team, the best of the best therapist, a kind and gentle recovery counselor, and a fun and wise TS/LS. I have been able to overcome so many obstacles and challenges I never thought I'd experience, while learning to love myself, trust myself, and give myself grace. The acknowledgement Fulshear shines on girls who are adopted and the struggles we face as not being fully related to our adopted families helped me heal a lot of feelings I wasn't even aware f that I experienced daily. My family sessions were always progressive and successful, me EMDR's painless and resolving, and found management with my spending and work life. I am eternally grateful for the relationships I formed while at Fulshear. I always felt I was the only one who struggled with the overwhelming emotions that come along while being a teenager, and I always felt not no0rmal or different from everyone else. Fulshear helped me medically, emotionally, physically, and mentally on acceptance and being confident and not ashamed of what I struggle with daily. (anxiety, depression, PTSD, etc.) I wouldn't be the person I am today--a functioning adult practicing sobriety, being an employee, and a college student---without Fulshear Treatment to Transition. The countless sessions and groups helped me grow and accept and thrive. I now can say I love life and am ready for any and all moments, memories, loses, and gains the future holds for me! read more

A little more than a year ago we were faced with transporting my daughter from True North Wilderness in VT to Fulshear in TX. Unfortunately they wouldn't have an opening for her until a week later. We were concerned because coming home in the interim wasn't an option. Della at Fulshear helped us by doing some research and recommending a number of activities to keep us occupied in the Houston area. Three days later my daughter's anxiety and depression got the best of her (and me). Unsure where to turn for support I called Della who immediately got on the phone with my daughter. I was able to breathe again, we survived the rest of our down time and arrived at Fulshear on schedule. I didn't realize it at the time but Della's dedication to my daughter's well being was characteristic of everyone my wife and I encountered while she was in the care of the Fulshear organization. Leaving our Daughter at the ranch was a tumultuous mixture of relief and sadness. Within a week regular communications with the clinical and residential staff were established. We knew who to contact if we received an unsettling or upsetting text or call from our kid. Then our 20 year old started to implode. The staff predicted the behavior and was able to see our daughter and us through the difficult first weeks. I have to confess that at first it was difficult to distinguish fact from fiction when our young adult communicated with us. The residential staff took our calls at any hour, listened carefully and always worked to satisfy our need for clarity. Clarity became our mantra as we entered into family therapy. Our therapist Duke helped us clarify our family situation, clarify objectives, clarify progress, potential pitfalls, and setbacks, as well as clarify our individual feelings and family dynamics. Slowly but surely we became a healthier and increasingly honest family. Duke employed his interest, expertise, and experience working with the complex profile of our adopted daughter. He helped her process the trauma of her first two years of life and her ensuing challenges with family, personal, and professional relationships. He taught the skills necessary to cope, predict, monitor, and adjust to life and challenged her to use them. I was particularly impressed with his direct and honest approach to everything. Our daughter met regularly with Hannah a Fulshear life-skills and transition specialist. At first we didn't fully grasp the meaning and importance of life-skills but Hannah maintained consistent communication with us and we came to understand the nature and importance of taking a deliberate approach to building a high functioning young adult. Even from afar it was clear that Hannah was teaching skills that would help well beyond the year at Fulshear. She coached and taught throughout the year and as our child neared graduation Hannah was right there supporting her preparations for life beyond the program. Monica, an insightful substance abuse counselor and mentor was a positive, encouraging, and realistic support to our daughter. She facilitated structure, and self awareness that are adding up to month after month of healthier sober living. Finally, I want to mention Fulshear's family programming. Every few months all of the families were invited to the ranch for an educational, social, and therapeutic gathering. Every moment was meaningful and useful especially the opportunity to speak directly with other families that were experiencing similar if not identical trauma. Its amazing to speak with people who "get it" instantly! To their credit the people mentioned above, the nursing staff, and the residential staff worked as a well coordinated team to the benefit of our family. Now that our child has graduated please accept our admiration and appreciation for all the expert and compassionate care you've provided. read more

I was at Fulshear for 14 months, and I left at the beginning of October of 2019. I struggled with random mental health issues that surfaced about a year or two before I joined. I was first placed in a treatment center in my own state that was DBT based. It was extremely helpful, but I felt that they only taught us coping skills for things as they come up. The difference between that center and Fulshear is that here, they teach their "Fulshear Attachment Model" which helps you understand the "why" behind all of the things that are coming up for you. They dig deep into your "core issue" and your "core meaning" rather than just helping you cope with whatever is coming up. That was the turning point for me. The thing with treatment centers is that since we all struggle with mental health, we are all being bunched together in a very triggering environment. You WILL be exposed to new traumatic experiences, but what matters most is how you choose to apply the concepts that you are learning in treatment. Being in such an INTENSE environment while I was learning about myself and gaining all of these skills has helped me learn that I can do harder things than I ever thought possible. My experiences at Fulshear were not always happy. That is not their fault. That is just how treatment works. It is HARD. It is TRAUMATIC. But it's what they teach you that is most important. And even more importantly, it is HOW you choose to implement that in your life. Fulshear gives you the tools that you need to move forward and to succeed in your own life. It is then that you need to make the choice to live by the principles that were taught. Upon returning home, I went into an "I AM OUT OF TREATMENT" phase, which meant "NO RULES!" I then made choices that affected my physical and mental health negatively, but I had to learn for myself why I was taught not to do those things while in treatment. I now had the the space to make my own decisions, as well as the knowledge I had gained at Fulshear. I then turned around and made healthier decisions FOR MYSELF, not because someone else was telling me to do them. The longer I am away from Fulshear, the more I realize that I have learned SO much. It has positively affected each and every one of my relationships. I am now more aware of the "why" behind peoples' choices, and I am more able to have empathy for them. I have so many tools that I have been able to teach my roommates, my family, friends, dating partners, etc.. But what astounds me most about leaving treatment is that even though life is sooo hard, I HAVE A WILL TO LIVE. I still experience depression and anxiety on a daily basis, but it blows my mind that I WANT TO LIVE. It is because of Fulshear that I am able to say this. They taught me that I am so important. I have worth. I am enough. And with that, I am able to stand up for myself and for what I deserve. As difficult as it is to be in treatment (and it feels like it will never end), I am beyond grateful to Fulshear for helping me find my self worth and a will to live!!! I have so many tools to succeed, and now it is my turn to implement them into my life to move forward and find my own happiness. read more

I've seen girls successfully graduate from Fulshear and I do believe it works but only for a very select and small group of women. For me personally, there were definitely times where it helped me grow to be stronger and I've made a lot of great friends there but unfortunately I think the dark side to this program outweighs the good. In my experience, a lot of the staff are very close in age to the clients and even sometimes younger, which seemed to cause very unnecessary power trips and unusual dynamics. If you want your daughter to have even more anxiety, trauma, depression, etc. this is the place. Half of the time staff don't even like you and will talk badly about you when you're not around, especially if you're not considered a "favorite". I've seen bullying, gaslighting, humiliation, and manipulation from staff, you know, the people we are supposed to open up to and trust? During my time as a client, and to put it lightly, was often times compared to the Stanford prison experiment. When it comes to bigger issues such as one of the male staff members and now licensed therapists using his power that he knows he has to get graduated clients into the palm of his hand by giving attention and validation through flirting and inappropriate communication, it's not that big of a deal. His reason for working at Fulshear? "To show girls it's possible to have a safe relationship with a man". I can confidently say that there is nothing safe about this person or program. It's honestly just disrespectful that they are so comfortable lying about the fact this man wasn't working for the program when I arrived at Fulshear or after I had graduated. I got to Fulshear in April 2018 and graduated February 2019 and he was most definitely working when I first got there AND when we were in contact after. How do you think we met? I am also not the only past client who was in inappropriate communication with this staff member. I reported him to one of the higher ups at Fulshear and was told how "brave" I was for speaking out and not staying silent about such a serious issue. They told me everything was going to be taken care of appropriately and, while nobody is surprised, Fulshear's definition of appropriate is to simply sweep things under the rug. This is something they have gotten very good at because there have been multiple occasions where staff members and clients have been involved in inappropriate relationships. They have proven to us time and time again that deep down they simply do not care and will continue to lie and hide things in order to maintain a "healthy, strong, and influential" reputation. read more

This is the third time I'm writing about this place, and I signed myself out 15 months ago so that should tell you something. Due to the horrific experience I had at Fulshear from March of 2018 to December of 2018, I am currently in the worst place I've ever been in in my life. Almost immediately after returning home from Fulshear, I relapsed and relapsed BAD. Maybe that's what kept my trauma beneath the surface, because as soon as I stopped using, the flashbacks started. Not that there weren't signs of trauma before. As soon as I moved back home, I found that I could no longer go into the city, where my whole life was and where I used to live, because suddenly the subway and crowds of people gave me severe panic attacks. I've been having recurring nightmares about Fulshear for over a year. But these flashbacks are on a whole different level. This isn't my first trauma by any means, but I have to say it is my worst, and I almost died once so that's saying something. I don't feel safe anymore because if the littlest thing reminds me of my experience at fulshear, I completely dissociate, start rocking back and forth, and sometimes I scream so loud that people have contemplated calling 911. After leaving Fulshear I reached out to the clinicians about how negatively the program affected me, if nothing else, hoping for an apology. I got no response, all they did was deactivate my fulshear email. Because of this program, I no longer trust treatment centers or anyone in the field. I've been without a therapist for over a year because of this. The clinicians at fulshear told my parents that their goal was to "break me so that they could build me back up." They broke me alright, but not once did they attempt to build me up in any way. If I didn't make it clear in my two previous reviews, this place ruined my life. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. If I could give negative stars I would. read more

As a previous client of this program for the past 7 months PLEASE do NOT send your loved one here!!! Fulshear just kicked me out of their program last week and I never violated any of their rules that would require me to leave involuntarily from the program. I witnessed staff refusing to give a client their medications because they arrived only a few minutes past the scheduled time to receive them and so many other instances of verbal/emotional abuse. I've been accused of lying, been extremely invalidated, disrespected, and gaslighted by a majority of the staff. I'm currently trying to deal with the emotional trauma of having all of my professional therapeutic support taken away in such a short amount of time. I was trying to advocate for myself to even be believed by my therapist that I had obtained a part time job that I was very proud of getting at their transitional living apartments. Multiple staff members refused to give me my cell phone (that I was allowed to have access to for a certain time everyday) for 3 days. I had to beg and plead for them to give me my phone to speak to the job manager who was trying to get into contact with me and to provide proof of employment to the program and when the staff eventually gave it to me I found out the job had rescinded their offer because I was not able to communicate with them efficiently. After this experience I was speaking to a few clients that I had gotten to know there about what was happening, desperate to talk to those I could trust and wouldn't accuse me of lying or invalidate/dismiss my problems like a majority of the staff members did. Several days later, the director of the program involuntarily discharged me from their program and left my parents and I scrambling and panicking for a place to continue my treatment that I was making progress with because I was telling girls I trusted there what I was going through, essentially being a risk to THEIR PROFITS and in their words "influencing and affecting the opinions of other clients leading to a collective negative attitude and perception about the program." And ever so conveniently my primary therapist "had the day off" the day when I was asked to leave, and I found out about all of this information with just under two hours to say my goodbyes and pack my things. (If you have read this far thank you. If you are wondering about my safety I am okay and with family in my home state. I am still going through emotional trauma with this situation and will update this review with more information soon.) Thank you for reading. read more

Fulshear has caused me an irreparable amount of trauma when they were supposed to help me heal. I went to Fulshear under my own will and idea back in late 2020 when I was at one of the darkest places of my life and it's taken this long for me to be able to be in a good enough mind space to post it. That should speak for itself. When I got to Fulshear and after I got checked in, I was completely left alone. No one told me the schedule or even showed me a schedule, and I ended up missing meals, groups, and therapy sessions because I was too anxious to leave my bedroom on my first day to ask. That is something they should anticipate happening as it happens quite often. Clients constantly got blamed for issues and the staff could do nothing for the clients and were poorly trained. They were forced to do notes on the clients for hours instead of spending time with them and helping them. Bullying was a common occurrence and clients ended up in the hospital due to the trauma caused by that even though I specifically talked to multiple staff and the residential director at the Ranch about it, who is still there in the same position. I was told that they couldn't do anything about it. The residential and clinical directors could also care less to do anything about it because they're in their own little leadership bubble and barely visit the residential cabins or talk about residential life. The staff would leave clients alone for hours a day and would mark them as in groups when in reality, they could be doing anything. I did not eat for three days in a row because of the amount of emotional distress from my PTSD I was in and no one noticed or mentioned anything. My therapist would spend our sessions either in silence or playing ping pong. I am one of the lucky ones that advocated and got myself out after only a couple of months, but the amount that I regressed is insane for the amount of money my family paid to be there. And after I decided to leave, they pretty much forced the community to shun me and they shamed me for any emotions I showed, no matter if they were productively expressed or not. Because of Fulshear, I have severe blocks towards therapy and residential centers. I frequently get severe flashbacks, and my everyday life including relationships has been negatively affected and is still negatively affected to this day. I can say that I will NEVER be able to seek out treatment again, even from an outpatient therapist or coach. Trust me, I have tried, but because of the damage caused at Fulshear, I am truly unable to. They have caused me so much mental and emotional harm that I have to accept that I will have to live with that for the rest of my life. I have to heal myself when we were paying them to help. I know my review is going to sound like I am a whinny, emotional girl complaining about a place they didn't want to be. But please don't forget that I wanted to go there, I wanted to heal, I wanted to trust. I didn't go seeking anything negative or in a negative mindset. I encourage anyone that's reading this with an intention to see if Fulshear is for them to seek out other support(not education consultants!) and unsilenced.org for more resources on how to find the right treatment for yourself and your loved ones so you can best heal. People out there care about you. Please do your research. You're worth it. read more

Fulshear is a life saver. My daughter had been to multiple treatment facilities from 8 th grade on, all of which helped but none set her up to succeed in real life like Fulshear. The set up to transition from life on the ranch to the apartment living helped her see what she needed to do to cope and succeed in real life. Her individual therapist was great ,I had an open line of communication and the transition specialists seemed a godsend. The combination of individual and group therapy gave her various outlets for stresses. Her life will always be a struggle but she knows how to identify and pull in the support she needs. Thank you Fulshear Nicola read more

I personally worked the program for over a year. I came into the program at a very low point in my life. I had no sense of identity, my family wasn't even on speaking terms, I self destructed in every relationship I came across, always played the victim.... the list goes on. My therapist, Curby, helped me see the role I played in what was going on in my life. She taught me how to shift my role, therefore taking the power back in my life. Curby was the most influential person for me at Fulshear and helped me turn into the powerful, self-aware person I am today. The entire Fulshear staff is exceptional. They are all genuine, kind people who are in the field because they care to help. I can not say this enough-The program is what you make of it! Seeing some reviews on here make me sad because it doesn't do the program justice. The staff will challenge every unhealthy pattern you have and encourage you to engage in a new, healthier way. However, it is up to the individual whether they choose to do it or not. Some girl are not ready to make these big changes. I was one of the girls who was ready. I am very grateful to Fulshear for showing me the way. read more

This place is all false advertisement. Fulshear is a negative place that's harmful to the people who are there- staff and "students" (if you can even call them that). The staff of the place has the mentality that the girls are prisoners and the whole place is basically the Stanford Prison Experiment happening in 2013. Of the staff that was there for the 3 months I endured there: the only ones who were sane or educated and reasonable all quit and left in the short 3 months I was there. Also there is major abuse of privileges by those who are in power there. Things that are supposed to be used by the "ranch" like the Fulshear truck, are used as personal vehicles (i.e. taken overnight) by the head woman. That's another thing- it's pretty expensive, and all of they money parents spend, I can promise you, will not be spent on services rendered, like therapy, but rather on pay raises for the woman -Tracy- if she's still there, for a bigger truck, etc. The whole equine/horse aspect is just a gimmick to make it seem at all helpful, wholesome, or therapeutic, all of which it is not. The whole time I was there I was allowed to get on a horse maybe twice. You mostly spend time cleaning up their poop- and believe me that was the best part of each day. There is a very toxic dangerous environment there where the staff manipulates the girls against one another to gain power and control. Also the whole time I was there I received very little therapy. My original therapist was great- but she quit abruptly, and I think it was because she had a problem with the amoral abuses suffered by the girls and the lower staff there. Also they are anti-education there, despite what they may claim. They made it difficult for me to finish my high school diploma there, and they only allowed my to take the SAT because my parents forced them to. I was given no opportunity to study, and had to hide my SAT book and study in a closet. There is nothing "positive" about this place. Save yourself a lot of heartache, and a lot of money and don't waste your time here. Signed, A friend read more

My daughter worked the Fulshear program for 15 months. When she first arrived, she was at a very low point in her life and extremely vulnerable and scared. I thought I had lost my daughter and had come to accept the idea that I may never have a healthy relationship with her. I was grieving... Today, my daughter is confident, trusts her instincts and can communicate clearly with others. I see happiness and joy in her and it is genuine. I never would have thought this was possible 15 months ago. She is transformed into the best version of herself and our whole family is better for it. Her transition plan included acceptance to a University which she will begin attending in January. I am excited to see how her life unfolds and how she uses her many gifts to help others. I believe in the Fulshear program because I have seen it work first hand. It is life changing which also means it requires tremendous focus and dedication. It is also very important for the parents to participate in family sessions. My husband and I did everything we could to always be available for the sessions to help repair our family dynamic and improve our communication skills. This was key to our daughter's success. Curby was our daughter's therapist and I feel tremendous gratitude for her. She is a beautiful person and great at her job ... All of the staff that I got to know are exceptional at what they do and authentically cared for my daughter. I highly recommend this experience if the person attending believes in the process and fully commits to the program. I have my family back and it is all because of the Fulshear program and it's staff. Thank you so much... read more

My daughter has struggled with a depression disorder for literally 1/2 of her life. She was in and out of 'treatment' programs, but they really didn't have a 'transition' program. They just medicate, some therapy and then push you out into the world, expecting you to use all the tools they taught you, with no follow up. Drug and alcohol programs are better than mental health programs, at least in Tx. Her Therapist, in Dallas, who admitted she was unable to help her any longer, highly recommended Fulshear. She had visited it 1st hand and had colleagues recommend it to her. Of course, it was scarey...as this was pretty much my daughters' last chance at getting the help she really needed. Helaine, the admissions director was so helpful, kind and understanding on the phone and when we went to Fulshear to admit. Yes, there were ups and downs. And, as you would expect in a mental health arena, there will be issues with the clients, be it the reasons they are there, or just normal 'young women' issues/ personalities trying to get along with one another. It is an unattainable expectation to believe there will be no drama or personality conflicts in this environment. With that being said, all of the staff was amazing with communicating with me and working with my daughter.... while helping her to achieve her goal of Healthy, Strong and Influential. Any issues we had were immediately addressed. Mental illness treatment is a roller coaster ride for all involved. All the clients have responsibilities assigned to them, such as cleaning stalls, cleaning the cottage they are in, do their own laundry, as well as attending group and individual therapy sessions. It all works into the treatment to transition program. I thought the equine therapy was 'cool', but I am a horse person.... my daughter, not so much... therapy wise. There are some 'staff dogs' that come occasionally, which also serves as therapy. Her therapist was / is awesome! He stayed in communication with me, and we had skype family sessions weekly. He is very prompt in answering emails, texts or voice mails. As someone else mentioned, I thought my daughter was the one learning and getting the treatment, but I also learned a lot about myself and her therapist helped me tend to those issues. Another great thing that Fulshear does is 'parent week' when parents and clients meet together in different informative sessions on a variety of subjects and areas of concern. (every 3 months) You can choose which sessions you wish to attend. They provided lunch, too! The transition specialist assigned to my daughter was fantastic! She started communicating with my daughter before the actual transition to the apartment, planning, setting goals and expectations. I visioned her with 'pom poms' cheering my daughter on 'you can do it.. you can do it'! ... and for me too, struggling with the upcoming independence. Fulshear also offers an 'after care' program which is continued therapy sessions and transition sessions after the client graduates from the program. VERY important. I HIGHLY recommend this program! read more

Fulshear changed my life for the better. The opportunity to receive this level of treatment was presented at crucial moment in my life; everything felt like it was falling apart around me and I didn't know if I could make it out to the other side. The work I completed during my year at Fulshear was extremely hard and terrifying at times, but my treatment team, parents, and peers were available to offer me support throughout it all. I was fortunate enough to have a phenomenal treatment team. My therapist, Alicia Pace, with whom I formed a strong, trusting relationship, had an astounding impact on my treatment and life. She listened without judgement during our sessions, and provided consistent reassurance that I could make healthy decisions independently. She helped me trust myself and others more. Her expansive knowledge on trauma informed therapy, such as EMDR, continues to help me on a daily basis with trauma reactions. Jenna Crowell, my transition specialist, showed a genuine interest in my goals from the beginning of my time at Fulshear. She helped me discover a college major that best suited my vocations, aided me in repairing strained relationships through open communication, and provided comical relief when appropriate. Jenna was able to make some of the strain of treatment a bit easier. I am beyond grateful for my treatment team's dedication to seeing me through this journey. My experiences at Fulshear taught me how to find my voice again. After being out of treatment for about eight months, I am mentally healthier and more secure in myself than ever before. I have confidence that I am, and will continue to be, okay on my own. One last thing... While walking through the office hallway one morning, I found a sticky note on the ground. It hangs on my fridge in my apartment now, and reads, "don't rush progress. remember: a step forward, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction. keep believing. -KG-" I often walk past it without reading the message most days, but I think it is appropriate to include it in my review of Fulshear. Fulshear reminded me to keep believing. read more

My daughter spent about 10 months at Fulshear, and this program was so helpful. The portion of treatment on the ranch was a great kick start. The portion in the apartments was the longer portion, and my daughter worked on skills to become independent, manage money and effectively live with others. In addition, she graduated from high school and got a job. She was able to effectively interact with others and break through barriers that kept her from leaving the house and kept her from attending classes. It has been almost a year, and she has still had some difficulties, but she has support from friends she made in the program as well as knowledge she did not previously have, so she is better able to work through situations that come up. I highly recommend the aftercare portion as well because that has been vital to her support outside of the residential treatment program. read more

Fulshear was the program that finally worked for me after years of therapy. It's a long, difficult journey but well worth it if you stick with it. My team supported me all the way through and beyond. I really appreciate the warm atmosphere created by the staff at the apartments and the attachment model used at Fulshear. Going to Fulshear was probably the most important decision of my life and I'm very glad I made the choice to go and stay. read more

This program truly changed my life. From the very beginning the administration, staff, and therapy teams were helpful, considerate and supportive. They are all very knowledgeable and well trained in their respective fields. The program was set up to allow me to both heal and grow on in independence and normal adult life. I never felt stranded or as if i was drowning. Even after leaving Fulshear, i was well supported and continue to be through a growing alumni network. I would recommend this program to any young adult woman who wants to change her life and give herself a future. It is so worth it! read more

Sending our daughter to Fulshear was the hardest decision that we ever had to make. However, it has been one of the best decisions. She was adopted from Russia after spending 10 months in an orphanage. She suffered from Reactive Attachment Disorder resulting in years of loneliness, feeling rejected and spiraling downhill into a social media addiction and a complete false identity. Fulshear uses an adult attachment model when dealing with their clients. This has been so helpful for my daughter. She started the program lonely, rejected, anxious and depressed. She graduated today 6 1/2 months later feeling confident and an inspiration to others. Kevin is such a phenomenal therapist. He has been a life saver for our family. The weekly family sessions have helped our family relationships grow. All the staff members at Fulshear have been nothing but wonderful for our daughter. In fact, our daughter has thanked us many times for sending her to Fulshear. If you are considering Fulshear to help your daughter, call today and ask for an admission counselor named Della. She helped us realize that Fulshear would be a great fit for our daughter. Thank you Fulshear for your passion to help heal families like ours!! read more

My time at fulshear which was almost a year was one of the biggest mistakes in my recovery. I worked my program to a T never missing a class, meeting, or session. I never thought that I could actually be more damaged through a rehab until I finally left fulshear. I wish I wasn't so misled in what I was told because I was so serious and determined in my achievement. I went on to another rehab for a year and graduated a year ago to a successful life. I pray that no one will have to go through what I did at fulshear. read more

We highly recommend Fulshear because, simply put, they saved our daughter's life. Around adolescence our child became very troubled. Unable to talk about her issues, despite therapy, and attending numerous programs, things only got worse. She engaged in increasingly dangerous maladaptive behaviors. Several suicide attempts, hospitalizations and section 12s later we were all at the end of our emotional ropes. She had no hope and did not want to live. We tried to enroll her in a world renowned mental health facility in the Boston area. We were heart fallen when they told us at the intake meeting that she was too chronic for them to help her. Taking her home would have resulted in disaster. They finally accepted her with the expectation that they would keep her safe until we found a more appropriate facility for her. They recommended Fulshear, 2,000 miles from our home. With reservations we took her there. The transition was very difficult and months went by with little progress. Yet, and this is key, Fulshear never gave up on her. They did not rush her through the program and let her progress at a rate she was comfortable with. Their expectations were clear and consistent. They helped her figure out, and deal with, her underlying issues. They set goals and she became a Barn Manager and slowly started to gain traction. For the first time she began participating in family therapy. She began to share her thoughts and to set goals to achieve milestones. She began to address her core issue and gradually embrace her core meaning. She graduated like a rock star. We could not believe the progress she made what an inspiration she was for the other clients and for the staff. She got a job, an apartment, a car and enrolled in school part time, all on her own. We can now talk to her in a way we never thought possible two years ago. Among other challenges we were skeptical about the equine component of the program. However, we saw its merits when we notice the client's connect with the horses as they drew emotional parallels between their respective histories. And we saw the client's confidence build as they worked with these 1500 pounds animals. Further, Fulshear offers Family Programming four times per year. Here the parents get to chose from a number of very helpful sessions to attend that help explain how the program will hopefully help their child. It is a big commitment of time on everyone's part, yet is so worth it. Is Fulshear perfect?: No. As some of the reviews from former clients show unfortunately it doesn't help everyone. And like anywhere else, some staff members are better than others. There were things that my daughter didn't like and things we had concerns about. However, taken as a whole, they have a comprehensive program, set clear expectations, and offer challenging and achievable milestones. Lastly, and we can't express this enough, they have an extremely dedicated and knowledgeable staff. The best program in the world will not work without a great team. Fulshear has a great team. read more

As a mother I was very nervous how my daughters experience at Fulshear would be. We had been through so much already. I was explained exactly how things would work, what I could expect, what Kens could expect & exactly how treatment would go & who was a part of her treatment team. It was difficult to leave as I lived in another state, but Helaine & her staff made the transition smooth. I always knew how things were going & would get calls when my daughter earned her phone time. Family weekend is held 4 times a year & I attended every one of them. My daughter was there just shy of a year. Fulshear saved her life, it saved our mother daughter relationship. For the first time ever, my daughter had a chance at life. It wasn't an easy year & she put hard work into her recovery, but she is a different person. She is amazing , happy, loveable, compassionate. Fulshear helped teach her how to live independently. She now lives in Houston, with a roommate, has a job & is going to Vet Tech school. I have the best time visiting her! It's hard to leave. Thank you Fulshear for giving me my daughter back!! read more

The place is excellent, it's a therapeutic girls school/program for 18 years olds and above. I have visited and I have had one girl there. It's all girls, the place is well kept, the Girls are happy and very well taken care of. They get therapy as needed, and they have fun actives to enjoy. The therapists are well trained and caring about the girls very much. The girls can come and go from the campus, as needed. They do have horses and some of the girls enjoy taking care of the horses. This program helps the girls get back on track and get on with life in a more positive way. read more

When she arrived at Fulshear, my daughter was suffering from a number of issues. She couldn't start college. She turned around at the dorm. She worked for a year. Tried again. Couldn't do it. We got some very good treatment at another center, but she needed more and we were pointed to Fulshear. Before coming, we felt her issues were merely related to "social anxiety", but we ultimately came to understand she suffered from interlinked personality, depression and attachment disorders. It was not easy for either of us. When I dropped her off on day 1, she did not want to be there. She yelled and screamed at me in words and volumes that I had never, never heard before. Let me say that the team at Fulshear was the most understanding and patient group of folks I ever met. They took care of her after I had to leave. My daughter was scared. They were there for her. She missed lunch, and one of the staff members shared his chicken fingers with her. A small thing, I know, but I'll never forget it. My daughter spent 13 months at Fulshear. She needed the time for the staff and therapists to figure it all out and give her hope for a new direction. Her team was responsive to her needs and I was always in the loop. She is so much better now. She has a job, started college in Houston, and is living in her own apartment. To me, that's saying a lot. I am so thankful for everyone at Fulshear. So thankful. read more

I arrived at Fulshear Ranch Academy on October 31st, 2012. Like many others, my parents and I felt that FRA was the only option to save my life from the downward spiral my surroundings, and myself, had created. We arrived hoping to find the answers and support that so many others had declared they'd received. I wanted to know why this was happening to me? Why I felt as though whatever I did to feel better just didn't work? Was I truly Bipolar or Borderline or was there something else the doctors were missing? I had always felt this way, as though there was something bigger that no one but myself seemed to feel. I wanted to learn, meet positive friends and staff, feel supported and not alone, and, honestly, to make sure my parents got their money's worth. I felt a lot of guilt at the price of FRA and I felt as though it was my fault that my parents were forced to embark on this journey, so I hoped that I would find that I would be helped to achieve all the things I sought, get my parents money's worth, and to truly make each moment of my time there successful. In retrospect, don't let the money sway you; just cause it's really expensive doesn't mean it's really good, and also just because it's inexpensive doesn't necessarily mean it will fall short. Unfortunately, after 6 months and 22 days, I signed out and left. What had greeted me at FRA was something that to this day, I have nightmares about. Negativity abounded, I met staff and faculty who's mannerisms and professionalism (or should I say lack thereof) was astonishing. Often times unsanitary accommodations, the feelings of being imprisoned and being herded almost like cattle between facilities and cottages with no regard for the instability this created in our lives. Menacing girls, mean and volatile, a few of whom did not seem to even be appropriate for FRA's care, but rather a more secure lockdown facility, who acted out without any repercussions for their actions. I also acknowledge that I was just as much a worthy candidate of a behavioral treatment facility, as anyone else admitted. But the problem was that aside from those who were there truly to improve themselves, there were those instead whose needs FRA wasn't able to accommodate. Thus, those said students would induce turmoil and chaos which would disrupt the progress of nearly all in community, most importantly those desperately trying to focus on bettering themselves. Granted, I lose my temper too, but when the anger and confrontation would reach physical blows, or hysterical mayhem, it would create complete emotional upheaval for nearly all of us involved, even if we ourselves did not resort to physical means. There was many a time that fights were broken up by other girls, instead of the staff members responsible to oversee. I can remember staffers fleeing a situation which had gotten extremely violent; several of them purely not being cut out for the demands of being a FRA staff member. I experienced unnecessary emotional trauma under the watch of many staff and faculty members of FRA. And trust me, as someone who sadly has been a victim of previous trauma, the feeling of being helpless and often alone isn't a place that encourages positivity and growth. I felt constantly degraded, and belittled. My fears or my aspirations weren't heard or addressed, but instead were acknowledged in a biased manner, with only the intent to shuffle me into a cookie cutter route that had been formulated by Fulshear and its team. I was compared alongside a hypothetical model , whose "needs" were different from my own and who's "symptoms" were used to formulate a blanket plan for all admitted. Each person experiences their troubles, grief, and ultimate growth differently, and I strongly feel as though the steps to get me through those weren't tailored towards my needs. And though I understand that they can't completely alter the program for each individual, I feel that I would've been able to excel and accomplished much more in my time at FRA if I had spent it working on aspects of myself instead of being forced into the mold of "FRA's Hypothetical Student Treatment Plan." Overall, I almost felt as though I left FRA with more abandonment issues and trauma then I arrived with. And, though FRA may be the perfect choice for others (the above is solely MY PERSONAL OPINION), but for those in the future who may be searching for a residential treatment center, I urge you look further than Fulshear Ranch Academy and strive to not give up in your search and settle for somewhere which might not entirely be right for you. In the grand scheme of things, FRA was just a bump in the road in my life, and I did somehow come out the other side a stronger, tougher person and ultimately healthy. I understand that, as in life, nothing is perfect and a no treatment center is going to be perfect, but I feel Fulshear Ranch Academy pushed the boundaries of acceptable imperfections. read more

Besides the fact that I post using a pseudonym, the following is true: Our daughter graduated from Fulshear in 2016. We are very glad she stayed with it and finished. We've learned that therapy is hard, it can take a while, but it works. When our daughter arrived at Fulshear, she fought against facing the true nature of her difficulties She didn't like how it felt to confront unhealthy attitudes and behaviors. Although she knew something needed changing, she wasn't willing to change. But she did change and it was because she began to embrace what Fulshear has to offer. Both us parents and our daughter have utmost regard for Fulshear's therapists, transition team, and staff. As parents, we attended quarterly visits for two-day group and educational sessions where we learned how therapy works. The educational presentations were particularly valuable. Also valuable was the interaction with other parents, some of whom we were with multiple times over several months. Not only did we see our daughter progress, but we got to see other parents' precious girls improve. And these girls ARE precious. They changed my attitude 180 degrees. Maybe I should be ashamed, but I'm now proud to admit that previous to our daughter's experience, I held stereotypical and condescending views toward young people who allowed substance abuse and lack of self-control into their lives. Over the months, I watched and saw these girls looking out for each other, holding each other up. Our daughter became surrounded by friends. They knew what she was dealing with. Their support helped her grow and get better. Staff and therapists were there to guide them all. This next part is something I feel I must comment on. I'm perplexed as I read two negative postings from 2016 by M D. and Fulshear S. I must simply conclude that the writer is likely the same person trying to drive people away from Fulshear for whatever personal agenda. The postings make no sense because the writer has obviously never visited Fulshear. M.D. writes " I was a patient here in 2015." That can't be true. In all our visits, I never heard any of the girls refer to themselves as "a patient." Fulshear isn't a medical facility and the girls don't see it that way. The two postings use almost the exact same words: M D.: "staff is aggressive and even physical at times" Fulshear S.: "staff was physical at times and aggressive" M D. : "The groups themselves were superficial and unhelpful" Fulshear S.: "The groups were superficial and unhelpful" Duplicate postings or not, this writer misrepresents how it really is. Our daughter never complained of anything close to staff abuse. Staff can be firm at times, as well they should be when called for. But that was rare, as it should be. The groups could be hard, but as it turns out, our daughter's groups proved valuable. Furthermore M.D. writes " The facilities are disgusting." This was never our experience. The facilities and grounds are attractively designed and stay meticulously maintained. Again, I have utmost regard for Fulshear. There's a night and day difference in our daughter's self confidence, self esteem, and her drive to make life worthwhile for her and others. read more

Fulshear Treatment To Transition is my second home. I was a client at Fulshear from December 28th 2017 until March 9th 2018. Before Fulshear I was at 5 other adolescent residential treatment centers and Fulshear was the only proften I felt truly safe to tackle all of my struggles. Fulshear is a program where every single person who works there cares deeply for you as if you were basically their child. When I first started at Fulshear I was an angry, confused, and a very sad girl but when I left Fulshear I was a strong, brave, and I loved myself. Fulshear has so many different options of healing such as equine, trauma therapies, and much more. I am so grateful for the time I spent at Fulshear because if I didn't go I know for a fact I wouldn't be here today. read more

I see a lot of negative reviews of this place and it genuinely hurts my heart. This place changed my life. I was here for nine months and I can tell you IF you put the effort in you WILL get great results. You only get out what you put in. I was skeptical at first but when I finally started working on my issues I realized how much this place actually helped. The staff at the ranch are incredible. They really make sure you know what genuine connections are and how they impact you. I remember my first day and I met a wonderful woman there who I soon would come to find out would my my entire experience at the ranch so much better. These people CARE so much about the clients it's ridiculous. The staff at the apartments are wonderful as well but the staff at the ranch really build up the standard of what a healthy connection should look like. This place has changed me and all my friends and family can tell you the same thing. I take so much pride of being able to talk about this place and the wonders of what it does to people! I had an awesome therapist, which is hard for me to say because I've seen many but she changed the way I look at life. There are so many excellent people here I'm telling you, you won't regret coming here if you have an open mind! read more

I only went in for an interview and tour with the whole staff. The way I was talked to and treated really made me upset, as well my parents, who supported me in being there. I was talked down to, and seemingly instigated when I spoke my opinion on certain issues they asked about in my life. They asked a lot of questions, no problem, I know the nature of the place, but when I said my opinion about my life they spoke down to me. Most time not speaking to me but at me, and mostly to my parents, who consistently referred them back to me in the group interview. I became angry, I rarely become angry. I was not even there for being "troubled" WHICH is what I was told the program was for? Maybe someone gave me wrong information, not sure, but I was there for a severe mental illness. I am an extremely quiet person, do not talk much, which was a small part why I was going in, so I would not withdrawal and would socialize more. They took my parents into a backroom and came out soon after. I ended up not going. My parents and I both felt the environment was appropriate enough. read more

I went here. I was molested by therapists, and I'm not the only girl that was. The allegations of inappropriate conduct were suppressed and shredded instead of filed by the woman running the program, until she was being brought to court and needed them to save her own ass. When a very brave, and very honest sincere staff member tried to step up, protect us "students" and bring these terrible things to light, she was called a witch, mentally unstable, crazy, etc. the girls that (along with me) who were abused were forced out. They were given medicine that would act badly with what they were already taking, they were thrown in asylums. Anything to make us unreliable. Do not send your kids here. I don't care if the staff changed or not. The company that owns this facility, InnerChange, knew this was all going on, and took action to protect themselves, not the victims. So how different can it really be now? How safe can it be, knowing the people who own this place knew all of this, and chose to cover their own asses. Protect your kids. Don't give a second look at this place. read more

My daughter was in the Fulshear Treatment to Transition program for 16 month and just graduated last mont. Deciding whether or not our daughter should go to Fulshear, one of the hardest decisions our family has ever made; our daughter suffered from an eating disorder, depression, and anxiety. At this point, my husband and I were unable to help her in the ways that she needed. I called Fulshear and talked to Helaine, the admissions director, and we spoke for nearly 2 hours; I finally felt like someone understood our family and what we were going through. Her kindness that day, and everyday after, will never be forgotten. Her journey began at the ranch, where she received daily therapy. One type of therapy Fulshear offers is equine therapy. Through equine therapy, our daughter learned how to read body language and regulate her emotions. In addition to the equine therapy, our family took part in family therapy phone sessions with her therapist Kevin, the Executive Clinical Director. These would take place every 2 to 3 weeks; it was an opportunity for our family to express ourselves, and our struggles, in a loving and safe environment. Every three months, Fulshear hosted a family therapy weekend. During these weekends, the ladies and their families would get together for a weekend of learning, bonding and sharing stories. After a while, we all felt so close and connected with one another. We talked about the different ways we'd learned to relate with others, while at the same time, healing alongside one another; healing together. It was an opportunity of a lifetime to be in the programs lead by the therapist, the wealth of information that they shared with us forever changed our lives. In our individual therapy sessions with Kevin, he made it so easy to be honest with each other, which in the end, made us all closer. Looking back, my husband and I thought this program was primarily for our daughter's health, healing and well-being, when in reality, it healed our entire family. After our daughter finished the therapy at the ranch, she began the next phase of her recovery and moved into the apartments. In addition to continued daily group therapy, the ladies in the apartment were responsible to either find a job, go back to school or volunteer within the community. They move into the apartments with other women from the program, while the Fulshear staff remain involved in their transition. Our daughter was able to move from a very structured life at the ranch to a less structured lifestyle in the apartments, all while living independently with the other Fulshear women. Monique, her transition specialist and Fulshear's Education Director, worked closely with our daughter and taught her various independent living skills, helped her find a job and get back into school. Monique was invaluable to our daughter's transition; she worked closely with each of us, making a lasting and permanent change in the way our family relates to one another. Our daughter still had one on one therapy with Kevin twice a week and monthly counseling sessions by phone with the four of us. Both Kevin and Monique feel like members of our family and their wisdom and guidance in working with our daughter and the entire family will always be remembered as a blessing. We are forever grateful to Kevin, Monique, Nikki, Helaine, Allyson, Shawn and Amanda and the entire staff at Fulshear, who have become our family. We are eternally grateful for Fulshear and everything it gave us. If you're considering Fulshear for your daughter, but are afraid to take the plunge, call them! You won't be disappointed. They are everything you could ever imagine for success and more! They will help your daughter become healthy, strong and influential in her community and society. What more as parents could we ask for! Thank you Fulshear for everything you have done for our family! read more

I owe my life, and my future, to Fulshear Treatment to Transition (and to myself). I was broken and at rock bottom when I went to Fulshear and I expected them to "fix me" and "give me the right meds" and "give me answers/solutions." If that is what you are expecting, you can forget it... you will gain so much more. The program is excellent, individualized, and one of a kind. I was able to work with a wonderful team of professionals who I felt like were always in my corner, even when I felt enraged with them. They supported me, challenged me, and encouraged me to evaluate myself and empower myself. They didn't do things FOR me, instead they guided me in finding MY OWN tools to build MY OWN foundation and I have since then continued building to create a life I'm proud of and capable of continuing. I've struggled and I have succeeded. I've also seen others struggle and others succeed. This program is truly the tool you need to take back your life and to live it through the bad times and the good times. It will work if you are willing to work. I will also say it will not work if you are not willing to work. That is true of anything in life though. If you are in a rock-bottom or low position in life yourself, or if you are a friend or parent of a person in a rock-bottom or low position in life, I 100% recommend you seek this program out to help you or your loved one take back their life. You will see a motivated, but incapable, 1.9 accumulative GPA college drop-out student transform into a 4.0 GPA involved, highly capable student. You will see an individual who desperately wants to throw away life transform into an inspiring life themself. I could go on and on, but my review will end by emphasizing that this program's motto is Healthy, Strong, and Influential for a reason. Those are not empty words or traits, Fulshear means what they say. So please take a leap of faith, like I did, and put your, or your loved one's, future in this exemplary program's hands. read more

Fulshear is amazing! Staff is doing their job and people get angry because they aren't getting what they want and what they want is unhealthy the people at fulshear do their job to help young women I have been here since may 2013 I absolutely love it. I have touched on stuff in therapy I never even thought I had an issue with or even realized. Just like any business the angry people are always quick to write a review and it's always exaggerated just like at my job people get angry if they can't use certain coupons well I'm just doing my job I'm not breaking the rules to risk my job and they get angry. I have had an amazing experience I love the staff and therapists and I absolutely love the psychiatrist. When u put in the work and just do what your suppose to do you can make it into something amazing. Nothing is handed to you just like with everything you have to work for what you want and I wanted a change I wanted to learn to live sober and at fulshear I have learned that and have found inner happiness. read more

Fulshear sent me a 'cease and desist' letter via their lawyer's office, so I am going to be extra-careful with this review--powerful corporation, me, not exactly a real fair fight. In fact, having looked over their website, I can see that they have changed the statements they make on the site regarding their program. I can now find less evidence of actual outright lies and/or hypocrisy, so yay--success for me~~! As encouraging Fulshear to advertise themselves accurately was the goal of my writing this review [as well as to provide potential residents with the information Fulshear's website. at least, was unwilling to do], I feel satisfied with this outcome. I would be more satisfied to receive back the money my parents paid for the privilege of me suffering at the hands of those who, according to my parents, lied to my parents regarding my experience of the program as well as what Fulshear described to my parents as "the progress I was making." I also find it fascinating that several of the claims the via-lawyer letter Fulshear sent to me makes regarding their program, particularly the most impressive of these claims ["Fulshear sits on over 60 acres of land", for example] are nowhere to be found on Fulshear's brand-spanking-new website. I think that anyone considering what program to send their child away from home to go live at for months on end would be concerned about such a program making the effort to contact a lawyer and send a cease-and-desist letter to an unhappy former resident based on the claims this resident makes about them on a public forum. To me, this behavior on their part smacks of bullying. This also seems to me to be an exaggerated response, considering the perspective expressed in the letter is that none of these claims I made in my former review had any truth to them. I would like to add that Yelp specifically makes it possible for businesses to directly refute and/or respond to comments reviewers make on this website. The fact that the program chose not to defend itself publicly but rather to attempt to privately silence me is..well, it speaks for itself, does it not? I hope that any parent interested in their child's welfare seriously considers whether an organization so concerned about their public image that they would send a 'cease-and-desist' lawyer over a Yelp review, yet so little concerned about accurately representing themselves that they would take 5 years to update their web page [which they did, according to the statements various staff members made several times to me and in front of me while I was a resident at Fulshear]. Looking back, I recognize that there were a number of red flags regarding this program that I should have noticed. The staff members treated me like an immature child when I went for my tour, and mostly spoke directly to my mother and primarily for her benefit [I am in my early 20s, and neither retarded nor stupid]. The residential director's office was on the far side of campus from the actual residences, which when I was at Fulshear were spruced-up trailers. The residents described the program in at best tepid language. The former admissions director spoke to me about several residents' personal histories--a clear, and illegal, violation of residents' privacy. I suggest strongly that you look elsewhere. For the record, for anybody interested in protecting themselves against libel and/or defamation suits filed by Texas businesses, here is a website that explains the difference between libel and/or slander, as well as what forms of free speech are in fact protected under law: http://www.citmedialaw.org/legal-guide/texas-defamation-law Here is a website that explains past decisions Texan courts have made on these issues, as well as how these decisions might apply to a suit filed against you: http://www.texas-opinions.com/law-defamation-libel-slander.html That is the last I will say on the matter-except that the other individual who previously wrote a one-star review of this business on yelp took down her review after I warned her about Fulshear's response to mine. Websters, "a bully": a blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker persons. Since my 2013 stay at Fulshear, every major staff member excluding the executive director and psychiatrist have either quit or been fired. The program's website now describes it as a "transitional" program. All the best to the staff members who have left the program, most of whom I believe to be far better than Fulshear deserves. I hope Fulshear continues to downgrade Ms. Nasis' position from her former spot as residential director, to her current one as education director..all the way down to nothing. I wish to add upon reflection the fact that this program, aimed at reforming young women, remains under the purview of both the male director of the corporation to which Fulshear belongs, as well as a male clinical director, is bad news. read more

From a Fulshear Alumni - On February 24th 2012, after many months at an adolescent treatment facility in Provo, Utah, I was finally being discharged. That same day I boarded a plane for Texas. After a long and seemingly successful therapeutic experience, I had voluntarily enrolled in Fulshear Ranch Academy to finish treatment and prepare for independence and adulthood. The following September, after about seven months at the ranch, I went on a home visit. Being back home with my family in the familiar setting of my "real life," it became clear to me that despite years of treatment, I had not really changed. Now I was at Fulshear at risk, once again, of not changing. I was working the program, I realized, for all the wrong reasons. That home visit was a definite eye opener. So when I got back, I finally had the motivation to dig in and work the program for myself. Things moved quickly for me after that. I starting participating in the program more actively and attending groups regularly; so after only a couple of weeks back I was able to transition to the apartments. Soon after that, I was hired for two part-time jobs. There were still daily struggles-like when my first therapist left the program-and life certainly wasn't perfect. But I made a lot of progress in Phase 6 and earned a tentative graduation date of February 1st 2013. Not long after this initial turnaround, though, I started slipping and I was asked to leave the program. I wanted to emphasize to you all, that this wasn't how I wanted to "graduate." I messed up; staffers told me time and time again that there were going to be consequences. But I did not listen. For most of you, Fulshear represents a last chance; how many of you are really taking that fact seriously? I definitely didn't, and it was almost disastrous. I'm so very lucky that I was able to pick myself up and start over. I used to complain about the rules and all the things I had to do at Fulshear. But since leaving, I've realized that the demands of Fulshear are nothing compared to the demands of real life. What I did not realize when I was slacking off and disengaging was that my biggest worry shouldn't have been getting kicked out. My real worry should have been having no clue what to do once I was in the real world. Like I was, many of you may be a little conceited, thinking that you can do it on your own without help or guidance. But do you really know what that entails? Can you get a job, and keep it? Can you schedule all of your own therapy, and psychiatry appointments, and somehow manage to arrive to them on time? Do you know what to do when one of your prescriptions run out? Do you know how to apply to college without help and how to order your high school transcripts? Do you know how to apply for SSI, and what the process is? Do you know how to live on a budget? And I'm not just talking about grocery shopping! Do you know where you are planning to live after Fulshear? All of these questions should put in perspective that the challenges of Fulshear are nothing compared to what you will be faced with a few short months from now. But, every single member of the treatment team and staff are here to guide you in the right direction so you don't fall on your face after you leave. The help is being offered, now it's your choice whether or not you're going to accept it and grow from it. I went home and found a local therapist that specialized in one of my core issues and I started going to therapy three times a week. I started going to church and met an amazing family with six kids. I woke up every morning to go to their house and fell in love with these kids. Living with mental illness isn't easy, some days are harder than others, but these kids looked at me like I was their hero. I applied to Azusa Pacific University and I will be going part time in the fall. I plan to major in psychology so that I can eventually become a therapist and hopefully become half as good as Diane someday. Nonetheless, every day of the week I'm doing something. Whether it is volunteering, studying, attending therapy, or hanging out with friends from church, staying busy gives my life meaning and purpose. My hopes and dreams are what give me the tools to get out of my lows. I've learned I can be whoever I want to be and nothing as insignificant as a diagnosis or a medication can stop me from achieving my goals. It wasn't until after leaving Fulshear that I finally started taking responsibility for myself. But I know that without my time at Fulshear, I wouldn't have any of this. Though my experience involved some bumps and wrong turns to the point of being kicked out, I have a very different outlook on life than I did the day I entered Fulshear. I could go on and on about how thankful I am. But I also know that this is just what they do at Fulshear-this is their job. And if you let them help you, you could be in your best place too. read more

Deeply traumatized me. They intentionally entrap you and don't provide the actual help that someone might need. It has taken me a year to work up the courage to write this review. I came to Fulshear 110% by choice. I spoke to a consultant who recommended them. Having paid this consultant $5000 I thought I'd most likely be in good hands... wrong. I am not mad at the consultant though, she was convinced it was legitimate as well and may have been money hungry but had some degree of good intentions. Little about me, early twenties, ptsd, anxiety, depression... common issues among others in my age group. I came to Fulshear with the intention of having an open mind/ giving myself the time to fully heal working on my trauma. The horse instructor isn't licensed and is probably the rudest of all the people who work there. She also used to teach "therapy groups" and wasn't a licensed therapist at all. No credentials whatsoever. That could've changed by now but still not a pleasant person to deal with. I'm a people person, I was raised by two amazing humans who taught me to have respect for others. This lady is straight up as unstable as some of the clients. The therapist I was assigned was so unprofessional she even threw a slushee on a client once because she is a text book narcissist who probably doesn't have any regard for anyone but herself. The guy duke who is the head therapist is a straight up weirdo. He thinks therapy is sitting in silence for an hour every time until someone speaks (wrong). He's tatted up but obviously converted to being Mormon. Listen, I have no problem with Mormons. In fact I have a few close friends I met who are Mormon and I love and respect them. It's simply an observation that a lot of the staff there are from the church of Latter Day Saints. I also was told that they recruit staff members at the church. Coincidence? I don't know. They say they aren't religiously associated but there are some really weird practices they have. Then there's a dude named Kevin I believe who came up with this module/therapy material that they follow religiously. To be completely honest, I have never seen any backing to what they are teaching. He came up with it all himself and I'm sorry, if I'm paying 10 grand, maybe 15 grand or whatever it is now I do not want to be a social workers lab rat. The best staff members they ever had were Nikki, Chico, Lisa, and April. (Chico and April are gone) and it's crazy because these "techs/staff members" did more than the therapists did there. They took an interest in the clients, they were the ones who were truly there when people struggled and offered solutions, support, advice, love and no judgement. Fulshear has potential to turn around though, there were some good things. First thing they need to do is bring Chico, April, and Mrs Angela (The cook) back. Those were the true lights among the program. Also they need to take some of the therapists out and replace them with people who actually care. I noticed that a lot of the staff members were very insensitive and would compare clients to each other as well as not individualize a persons experience like they claim to. They make it sound like a relaxing place to really turn your life around. In the short time I was there (2 months) they got bed bugs (tried to cover it up), there was a staff member who touched a client inappropriately and said he wanted to run away with her, they put Karate Kid on over and over again instead of actually providing therapy, my therapist put photos of my dead friend in a paper shredder in front of me and said I wasn't allowed to have them, they didn't do an ounce of legitimate therapy, they forced "students" to scoop horse poop every day, they call the "students" family member or loved one and lie about them. They say the person wants to leave because they're mentally ill. Last but not least because there are so many things that I can't even sit here and go on about because I'm starting to get upset but they will make sure you end up homeless or overpaying for your flight to leave. It just isn't up to the standard it should be. If you'd like to possibly further the trauma of your loved one send them here. Boot camp approach? Perfect location. Want them to be worse off? Let's do it. Fulshear treatment to transition needs to be shut down and when I gather more courage I might just have to go public with my story fully. Thank you Yelp for the platform/opportunity to warn others about this horrendous, disgusting, artificial, jungle of a place.. oh and also, an update on me: over a year sober thanks to a REAL treatment program (that one being Ascend Recovery in American Fork, UT). read more

The previous reviewer "Peter L." must work for FRA or be very misinformed and delusional to write a review full of such lies. Fulshear Ranch Academy is a scam that takes advantage of young women in need of help. The fliers they send are all full of false advertisement and based on when the ranch was first started. The place is a fraud. There is no real horseback riding program or classes. You do take care of horses, but only two are broken and available to ride for beginners. The other horses are not trained. There is a DBT class once a week if the staff show up. There are a group of girls who have started a law suit against the place. Here is one traumatized girl's blog from a couple of years ago with other girls, including me, commenting with their similar horrible experiences over the years at FRA: http://fulshearranchacademy.blogspot.com/2012/07/attending-treatment-at-fulshear-ranch.html?showComment=1392393030734#c6404026387580772972 I still have nightmares of being there. I was stuck there for 6 months from October of 2010 to late March 2011. I went there voluntarily to try to get some help with my Bi Polar Disorder and Depression. When I saw what kind of horrible place I was really at I asked to leave. They refused. They wouldn't even let me contact my mother until the end of the week. Then when I did contact her, they had already talked to her and convinced her that I wanted to leave just to get out of having to deal with therapy. I tried to run away four times. It is hard to get away when they take away your money, cell phone, and ID. The first time I was gone into the next day from trekking through the night and sleeping in a field under some huge power lines and when I finally decided I was too exhausted and called my mother from a gas station about 15 miles away, they hadn't even told her I was gone. My psychiatrist and the staff lied to my mother in order to keep me there. They told her that I was lying to her when I described what the place was really like. She wouldn't even listen to me, because they convinced her that I just wanted to get out of being there. The place should be destroyed. It is full of corruption and under-qualified staff who look down on the girls there and treat them like juvenile delinquents. A psychiatrist there even slept with one of my fellow "students". She was fired. They covered it up and said that she left for a new job, but we all knew the truth. Most of the psychiatrists and staff that I met quit while I was there. I assume that they didn't want to be a part of the place anymore. One incident that was caused by irresponsible staff related to providing medication. They refused to get one girl's meds when they ran out on the weekend. She begged them because she was feeling withdrawal and manic. She went into a psychotic episode and attacked the staff and literally punched bloody holes in the wall. They evacuated us to the front house and called the police. They had to shoot her with a taser gun to subdue her when she kept fighting and trying to assault the police officers. Then they took her to the hospital. At least she got out of that hell on earth. That is just a tiny bit of what went on there and does not include even a fraction of what I went through while I was there. I finally got out of there when I ran away and got a ride with a fire fighter to the police department. I asked them to take me to the homeless shelter rather than live as a prisoner with no dignity or freedom of my own. This is finally what convinced my mother to let me come home. The last day and night I spent there they forced me to sleep out in the cold without warm clothes as punishment. I was so cold I ended up forcing my way into the little bathroom by the pool to get warm. The staff woman with me kept trying to make me come out. I still wake up in a panic when I dream of being trapped there. read more

Fulshear is not what it says it is. If your kid has a drug or alcohol problem, they are not licensed for that, and they don't drug test regularly. If your kid has an eating disorder, it will get worse here with the fatty carb-filled diet. Fulshear is in the worst place where you would never want to live. It's so hot, and they have a tiny pool but don't let you use it much. There's nothing to do in Needville. The group sessions don't help you much. If your parents visit, they don't let them talk to anyone cuz they don't want parents to know how bad this place really is. Two girls brought pot in while I was here. One of my counselors was in his 70's and hardly knew how to use a computer. They don't help you get a job or learn how to live on your own. I got out 3 months ago, and needed to go to a real place where they teach you about addiction. I feel bad my family wasted their money here. If you love your kid, don't send them here. read more

My daughter was at Fulshear for about six months. It was not a good experience. They had only one registered D&A therapist, and the food was carb-heavy -- very bad for girls with eating disorders. Our monthly reports were cut and pasted from previous months. The worst part is the location. If you want you daughter to transition into the community, she will be stuck near Needville, Texas. Though my daughter had a drug addiction problem (which we were not totally aware of when she started), they recommended her to be trained as a phlebotomist (drawing blood for blood tests), which would have put her around needles all day every day. I realize this is not a D&A rehab center, but many of the girls do have D&A issues. Our daughter ended up in the emergency room after OD'ing with a former Fulshear student who was using drugs. read more

We sent my 19yr old niece there to help her with her severe bipolar disorder. It has been 8 days and we received a text from another girl there with an SOS from my niece, because she was not allowed to use the phone to call us and we weren't allowed to contact her either. We called Fulshear and demanded to talk to our niece and they gave us the run around. 3 hrs later, and many phone calls of being berated by their staff, we finally got to talk to our girl! DO NOT bring your girls here! Complete and total false advertising! Not one staff member helped my niece out at all and in fact they put her down at every chance possible! They should be sued in a class action lawsuit! All they told us was lies so that we would sign and pay a $25,000 bill! What kind of sick people are they work there? read more

The worst decision ever. They told my parents that I fought them the entire time. They were 'afraid' of me. Smh. I was the second "Black" client they had and they treated me like a criminal. They told my parents I didn't do anything they asked. They told my parents that I would never be able to live on my own with help. I never fought them. I was the least violent person there. I kept to my self and did what I was supposed to do by the contract guidelines. I am now living in my own place. No further treatment and I am perfectly fine read more
