This beautiful, historic colonial-era cemetery located along the water is a very peaceful final resting place for many of Puerto Rico's most prominent citizens. Construction began in 1863. It was named to honor Saint Maria Magdalena de Pazzi. The prominent location along the Atlantic Ocean was due to the colonial Spanish Puerto Rican government's views on life and death. Death was seen as an unknown, a mystery, which created fear and anxiety. The cemetery was constructed as a bridge that overlooked the Atlantic Ocean to help the deceased spirit's journey to bridge, or cross over, to the afterlife. To visit the cemetery, drive through a short tunnel on Calle Tiburcio Reyes or enjoy the views as you walk along the grass fields at the enclosing walls. Take care as the surrounding La Perla district is not the safest in Old San Juan. We just enjoyed the views from the tops of the walls.

I enjoyed exploring the fort and taking in the scenery from the massive stone walls. Admission is reasonably priced at $10 per adult and includes access to both Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal for 24 hours, making it a great value if you plan to visit both forts. One of the things I found most interesting is how much there is to explore throughout El Morro's different levels. The iconic garitas (sentry boxes) offer some of the best views and are a symbol of PR. The main plaza gives a glimpse into daily life inside the fort, while the lighthouse continues to guide ships into the harbor today. The Santa Bárbara Battery sits right at water level, where cannons once defended San Juan Bay, and the floating staircase connects the fort's levels. I ended up buying a few hot sauces from the gift shop before leaving. My biggest recommendation is to start your day early if you want to see both castles the same day because they close a bit early. There's far more to explore than you might expect, and having access to both forts makes for a full day of adventure history, views, and plenty of walking.
