About three years ago, I decided to do the ultimate splurge and get a dress made. I looked for…read morequite a while for someone who wasn't asking for a month's wages, and stumbled upon Lynne Edward. She and I corresponded for a bit and not only was her quote incredibly reasonable, I thought she seemed absolutely lovely. I sent her some ideas and she posted me a few different fabric ideas she had. Meeting and communicating with her was not only easy, but so much fun. She produced for me a dress which I have worn on every special occasion since, and which I have received compliments on every time. Just this past weekend I was visting friends at whose wedding I was able to wear my dress. The bride's mother was up visiting and when I met her again this weekend she said to me "you probably don't remember me, but I remember when we met you were wearing the most amazing tartan dress." Lynne's dress was so amazing that the bride's own mother (who is a dressmaker) remembered it, two years later. If that isn't an outstanding endorsement, I don't know what is.

However, from past experience, I'm in the fortunate position of being able to say that it's never been a wholly unpleasant experience: until I went to Guy Fawkes. Everything started off well; the beautician who greeted me was able to see me an hour earlier than my booked appointment which was handy, but maybe it was at this point that alarms bells should have rung. On their website, they describe the gruesome act using relaxing, holistic terms like "aromatherapy oils" and "pink cream wax" which I took to mean that at least there'd be a concerted effort to make you feel comfortable. This wasn't the case - the beautician who saw me had a job to do, and no idle chit chat or relaxing malarkey was going to get in her way. After lying down in the brightly lit room the girl started ripping off the wax like her life depended on it. Don't get me wrong she seemed perfectly nice, and I'm sure if I met outside what I now call the torture chamber we'd probably get along. But as she relentlessly waxed and plucked at my tender skin I couldn't help but think we'd never be friends.

The RNLI Station near the harbour at Seahouses houses a little shop and also a viewing area where…read moreyou can look at the Lifeboat from above. In this viewing area you can read all about the history of the Seahouses RNLI station and its crews and also peruse the logs of all its call outs both recent and historic. Seeing the lifeboat really brings it home that the people who man it are volunteers and put their lives at risk to save others. True heroes in my book! The shop raises funds for the RNLI and has a range of second hand books and also gifts. I nearly always end up buying something 'boatie' themed for my canal boat from here including Port and Starboard salt and pepper pots last time I visited! :-) Definitely worth a visit when you're in Seahouses, children love to see the big bright orange lifeboat and you can always pick yourself up something good to read from the shop whilst supporting an absolutely vital cause at the same time.
