Having headed out straight from work and without sustenance I was quite amenable to my friend's suggestion to head into Stew and Oyster for more drinks and a bite to eat. I can't believe I've never been to a Stew and Oyster before, I love a good stew and here they have stew in abundance and in so many very tempting varieties. I opted for a lamb hotpot which came with a large hunk of marvellous (and I'm told, local) bread and a portion of garlic butter. This was stew heaven! Full of chunks of potato and carrot not to mention loads of tender, lean lamb and perfectly seasoned. The whole washed down with a glass of Shiraz (I have decided to forgive them for running out of Merlot). Due to my losing track of time and the imminent arrival of my bus we didn't have the opportunity to finish a very cold night with a hot chocolate and brownie but there is always next time and I;m determined that won't be too long.

When we arrived -- 15 minutes early, by the way -- and told the host about our reservation, he looked completely shocked. He denied ever receiving a reservation call. I showed him my call log (see attached screenshot), which clearly shows we called the correct number. He admitted he was the only man working the phones and that it was indeed the right number -- but still insisted no reservation had been made. Even though the restaurant had empty tables, he refused to seat us, was incredibly rude, and paid us no attention while continuing to serve others. No apology at all. No effort to resolve anything. Just left us standing there. Absolutely absurd and laughable experience. Never again.

We had ordered some side veg, that had been steamed and buttered with finesse, as much as you might consider veg to be cooked with flair. The leg came complete with the gravy of goddess, and couldn't have been cooked better in my humblest opinion. It was juicy, tender, and was finished off with a crispy bit of skin. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it, and I rarely find chicken interesting enough to ponder. The creme brûlée was probably one of the nicest I've had. Not overly creamy, not sugary. A perfect balance. As for the ambience, well. I guess this would depend on your preference. I can't deny there's an air of exclusivity, and not least due to the prices. That being said, I'd encourage a visit for several reasons. As a treat it's fabulous, and I can tell you now, I've walked in wearing jeans and had no comment. Not even a look.
