Although they are known for their amazing macarons, their other desserts caught my eye. They are a work of art! And the store itself is bright, colorful, and inviting. I had a question about ingredients for one of the desserts (we have a nut allergy at home, so I like to double check) and the employee happily offered to check with the kitchen. For both of my visits, the employees promptly and kindly served me, and I got the desserts packaged to-go. (The bakery's space is small.) For my first visit two years ago, I purchased the La Poire pear on cheesecake and a chocolate biscuit; the Orangette orange mousse with grand marnier, dark chocolate, and a sponge; and the Lola raspberry mousse with pistachio cremeux and sponge. My average rating was 3.5 stars, and I most enjoyed the Lola. For my recent visit, I purchased a raspberry tart (5 stars) that had a perfectly crunchy crust, sweet cream, and many fresh, large raspberries. I was highly disappointed by the fruit desserts here. I've seen these advertised on TikTok and while they looked very pretty, the taste left me unsatisfied. The raspberry had a cold frozen texture and an odd taste (as someone who loves raspberry), but the chocolate dessert was alright. Definitely not worth $8 though. If Sesame Street occurred in France, Le Monstre de Biscuit would go Merde de Singe for these cookies. I probably walked by this place dozens of times during my travels in and out of Pittsburgh, but never purchased until my most recent trip. I finally decided to splurge and get some of these cookies. My macaron knowledge isn't that great, and I even DVR'd a "How it's Made" episode so I can try and understand WHY these things are so damn pricey. After we already ate the batch, I learned that they are originally Italian which explains why they're so good. The "cookie" parts are made with meringue (egg whites) which are prepped and baked. The precision is key, and so is the filling. I don't plan on trying to make these on my own. That would be a disaster. The woman selling me the cookies explained to me the length of the process the baker follows, and when I realized there was a line forming behind me with the now Florida Man inquiring about the cookies, I turned and apologized and they understood and re-assured me the purchase would be worth my while. I was skeptical, but I doubt they were paid endorsers as the elaborate scheme of buying airline tickets to get into the terminal, wait for someone to show interest, then coax them into buying was probably not a logical plan. There's no getting around it, these cookies are expensive! I totally have thought about it many times and I finally decided to do it. Maybe it was the flights at Vino Volo or the nostalgia at being "home", but I felt like it was the right thing to do on that day, and I was not wrong. I got an assortment of cookies from just plain chocolate and raspberry, to the more exotic pear rosemary and white chocolate basil. All were delicious in their own right, even the "Black and Gold" which has a peanut butter filling and was similar in flavor to a tagalong. These delicate cookies are hard to share and I found it best to eat all at once instead of trying to bite and have the cookie crumble into the bathwater. TMI? sorry 'bout that. It eats like the best flavored cream puff you can fit in your mouth (yes you can, don't act like you can't). Pro Tip - Pick up one of these cookies as if you're picking up a delicate faberge egg or you'll make a huge dent in the cookie. Some people can be so unrefined. Since there was a clear freshness to the cookies, we decided to eat them quickly instead of saving for a latter day (saint). Man up and buy some and I Believe you won't regret that decision. Guys. This place. It's UN. REAL! My friend was gushing about it, so I just had to stop inside. I felt like I'd entered another world the moment I set foot in that little place. The hosts greeted me warmly and were excited to share the story of this shop with me. I won't spoil it for you - you gotta go there yourself to find out! They also showed me the different pastries and told me about the ones that especially interested me. What I loved was that they also allowed me a bit of space to think without hovering or pressuring me into anything. When I finally decided (SO many choices, so it was hard!) they were careful with my delicate little choices, placing them in a fancy box AND a fancy bag. They didn't stay there long - I just HAD to eat them. Oh. My. GOSH. Flavorful, not too sweet at all, and not even a little bit bland. Everything was fresh, absolutely gorgeous (enough to be almost scared to eat them), and impossibly delicious. I melted and wondered if the entire experience was real. As a tip, the lemon tartlette is my go-to, and almost everything needs to be refrigerated pretty quickly, so be ready to either eat or store it safely in the cold right away. I also thought the price of each treat was more than reasonable, considering how delicious and stunning they are, but don't expect to pay less than $6 for each one (except the macarons and bread - they don't cost as much). 3 stars might be more fair, but I'm rounding down because I genuinely don't understand all of the good press. As a fair caveat, I've never had their fancy stuff like macarons or elaborate cakes. That said, the "basics," pastries and breads, are just average. The baguette has an ok crust, but tastes more like white bread underneath than like a real baguette. The chouquettes are too heavy and don't taste especially fresh, and the croissants are very squishy. It's a really lovely little clean shiny modern French bakery full of treats, with absolutely lovely service from girls that are genuinely obsessed with their own products and excited about them. The Macarons were good, and probably would have earned 5 stars if they were normally priced, but at $3 a pop, I couldn't possibly give them higher than a 4. I've had much better incarnations of them which are invariably cheaper.
