A service so unpleasant that we almost walked out…read more We visited as a group of 10 people and the experience was extremely disappointing. The food tasted good, although the presentation was rather poor. The real problem, however, was the service. There were constant mistakes with our orders. Dishes arrived with missing or incorrect ingredients, there was confusion about who had ordered what, and food even appeared at our table that nobody had requested. The most surreal moment came when a sandwich arrived that none of us had ordered. When we pointed this out to the waitress, her response was simply, "Well, I'll just leave it here," and she left it on the table as if the problem had somehow become ours. We later had to ask her to take it away because, unsurprisingly, it still didn't belong to anyone. What makes this even more difficult to understand is that the restaurant was practically empty. Outside, there was only our table and another table with two people, yet the amount of confusion and mistakes was remarkable. And the worst part wasn't the mistakes themselves, but the attitude of the blonde waitress who was serving us. I don't know her name, but the restaurant will have no difficulty identifying her. Every time we pointed out a mistake (mistakes that we certainly hadn't caused), she reacted with sighs, muttering, obvious annoyance and disapproving looks. The constant feeling was that pointing out an incorrect order seemed to bother her more than the mistake itself. Rather than trying to solve problems politely, she made us feel as though we were somehow responsible for them. At one point she even told a colleague, in front of customers, "You deal with them because I can't be bothered." Seeing a waitress openly disengage from a table in that way was as surprising as it was unprofessional. In all our years of eating out, we have never felt like we were inconveniencing staff simply by asking for what we had actually ordered. The atmosphere became so unpleasant that all ten of us genuinely discussed whether we should stay or leave. We ultimately decided to remain because we didn't want to ruin a meeting that had already been arranged. In all our years of dining out, we have never seen a single waitress achieve something so remarkable: making an entire table seriously consider leaving before the meal had even begun. To top it all off, the table was dirty and the receipt was printed incorrectly to the point that many items and prices were barely legible. We understand that technical issues can happen and that this is not necessarily the staff's fault, but after everything else it felt like just one more problem added to an already frustrating experience. We don't get upset over an incorrect order. What matters is how that mistake is handled. Anyone can make a mistake, but poor customer service is a choice. The value for money didn't help either. The burgers were surprisingly small considering the prices, the portion of fries was minimal, and the presentation left a lot to be desired. When a restaurant charges those kinds of prices, certain expectations naturally come with them. Unfortunately, neither the food nor the service lived up to those expectations. The impression we were left with was of a place aimed mainly at passing tourists, where customers are charged far more than what is actually being offered. All ten of us left with exactly the same conclusion: we won't be returning, and we certainly won't be recommending this place to anyone. There are plenty of places where you can enjoy a meal and a good time with friends. This is not one of them.

I had very low expectations for Cerveceria Nueva Ola, as my decision to dine here was based on my state of feeling pressed for time. To add insult to injury, I had a not-so-great food streak in Córdoba. In any case, the proximity to Plaza San Juan de Dios makes Nueva Ola the perfect spot for people-watching and of the restaurants in the area. Let me tell you, that half portion of albondigas de merluza and caña made up for every horrible meal that I had eaten in Córdoba. For me, the albondigas represented an Andalucian classic with one of Galicia's most treasured fishes. It was as though a little piece of Vigo followed me on my travels to the south. Over the past few weeks, I've had a series of flashbacks involving a cazuela of these "seafood meatballs," the composition of which was fish held together by a minimal amount of breadcrumbs. (Perfect, just the way they ought to be - without fillers!) I was delighted to see that potatoes were included - because it's not a meal unless there are carbs involved. Is it possible for the salsa to trump the albondigas themselves? A fresh, slightly thick seafood sauce had plenty of mussels and clams. It was tasty enough to warrant use of the entire basket of bread (which they charge for in the south of Spain, by the way) to sop up whatever was stuck to the cazuela which I could not consume with a fork and knife. With a caña to wash everything down, I was refreshed, invigorated, and ready to explore the historical areas of Cádiz and put my paltry Spanish to work (oh, and eat some lightly fried seafood later that evening). 4.5 stars.
