I can't say enough good things about Gaia and Mindy. Let me start out by saying I have combination hair, I'm Irish and American Indian so my hair is curly, thick, and fine. I've always had to style my hair, or it is just a wild mess of fluff. After I started seeing Mindy, I was able to wash my hair and just let it air dry and it always looks perfect, no need for styling. It was at that point that I realized, its not so much that my hair is a wild, crazy mess, it's the cuts I was getting. I've lived in different areas and Mindy is the only person who cut my hair and was able to tame it. I've since moved away from Manhattan but am seriously debating flying back to get Mindy to cut my hair. Sure, its inconvenient but its worth it. Since I've moved, I've had six different stylists cut my hair and no one can duplicate Mindy's results. She is an excellent stylist and colorist. Her demeanor is always very amenable, and she listens to what her clients say. I found Mindy after a bad cut at Platinum, she was able to help me out of a bad hair situation. She's cut my hair in super short lobs and longer styles when I grew it out too. An all-around skilled stylist with all hair types. The first pic is what it looks like when pretty much anyone else cuts it. This second pic is what my hair looks like with no styling when Mindy cuts it. Big difference, right? I called here to make an appointment for all over highlights and a trim. I'm about to leave for a trip overseas where I plan on keeping my hair up for a while. (ponytail) I had just wanted my natural color added to my hair so that the grow out wouldn't look as rough. I was informed that I would need to make an appointment for a 30 minute consult to speak about my hair, what I want, what styles would look good on me and prices for all of these things. I know what I want- and it does not require a 30 minute explanation. My time is valuable and I'm trying to pack and finish school work- not drive across town in order to waste 30 minutes of time in order to make a future appointment. I was then told that I could schedule the cut and 30 minute consultation for the same time. In what world does that make sense? THAT alone leads me to believe that the hair stylists don't know what they are doing since you cut your hair AFTER you color it... not before. While I may not have a beauty school degree I have been going to high end salons for years in the Washington DC area, Chicago area and NYC. I have never, ever been informed that I should cut my hair and then dye it- nor did any of those salons require that I make two separate appointments. I will not give my business to this salon. 30 minutes to discuss my hair feels like you need someone to hold your hand through the process- it's unprofessional and makes it appear as if your establishment has either had issues in the past with colors coming out incorrectly or that your staff is not knowledgeable enough to know how to mix color without having to speak about it at length. read more

worst eyebrow waxing experience EVER!! Went in to get my eyebrows and lip waxed a couple days before an important event and left with multiple chunks of skin missing! I was unable to attend the event because the patches of missing skin were unable to be covered with makeup. Worst experience I've ever had and will never return to Gaia. read more

I work at a well-known salon in San Marino, California so I have high expectations when I go into salons for a visit. So, let me start by saying that I had an AWESOME visit. Not only that but I had just flown in from Los Angeles an hour before and these girls were the first few people I interacted with. The front desk coordinators were a pleasure and Erin my stylist was super knowledgeable and a pleasure to meet. I was in town for a ball and Erin helped me figure out what I wanted in an updo. She took her time before we started. During my service she told me about cool places to go after the ball which I found extremely helpful because I was outside of my normal sunny California enviroment. I grew to love the midwest and all the cool things to do out here. Being that it was my first visit they game me $15 off because I was new. I started going to Gaia salon at the beginning of 2007, my stylist of choice is Crystal. She's wonderful, talented, skilled, friendly. Going to Gaia is a wonderful experience. If you haven't been before try it out. Their staff is dedicated to making you feel spectacular! The salon is great; everything you want and expect from a place you go to to make yourself feel beautiful. I got highlights and a haircut by Hailey (not sure about how to spell her name). I am naturally dirty blonde and wanted some all over brightening but no obvious streaks or stripes. She hit the nail on the head and also gave me a really nice neck and shoulder massage. I am really happy with the job she did and I'd say I'm hard to please. SUPER EXPENSIVE! I paid around $200 for a retouch on my highlights and a trim. I am all for paying for quality but I wasn't thrilled with the color the stylist put on my hair. I am new to town and have worked very hard with my stylist where I previously lived to get an ashy blonde color. I'm not sure if the stylist didn't get it or if she doesn't work with blondes a lot. But in my past experience those who have very little experience with blonde hair have a tendency to turn it yellow. So I left with $200 less in my account and yellow hair. That being said the neck massage was nice and my stylist made good conversation. I like the overall vibe of the salon. But if you're looking for a very specific type of color for a decent price find somewhere else. If you're not picky about your hair color and have money to spend this is for you! read more

Went in for the balance treatment - a chair massage that helps you unwind. Also had my nails done by Stevi with shellac - AMAZING stuff! I'm such a huge fan now. Got them done on a Saturday morning before moving and three days later, not a scratch! Still glossy and looking great! Definitely worth the extra price. For my 700th review I will bestow this excitement on Gaia. I had the random good fortune of sitting next to owner Mary on a tiny plane between MHK and Dallas and explained to her my woes of flying from MHK to Vegas to see my aesthetician. She suggested I give her aesthetician a try when I was ready. After a year of going to Vegas back and forth (to see my husband, not my aesthetician haha), he finally moved here and I knew my trips to Vegas could not be only for beauty purposes. I called the salon to learn about what types of wax were utilized and got a lot of information (there is a sensitive skin wax and a soy-based non-wax product). I took the chance and made an appointment with Hannah. She is truly excellent and makes me feel very comfortable. I am now a regular client and thankfully got the blessing from my Vegas aesthetician so I do not feel like I am cheating on her. I recommend Gaia for waxing though don't take all of Hannah's appointments or I won't get in! read more

Scheduled a consultation appointment two weeks ago and about 10 minutes before my appointment was called to be told my stylist was running late. Got to the salon and the stylist still wasn't there and was put with a different stylist. She talked with me for maybe 5 minutes and I still had to pay $25 for that "consultation". I've only been here to get my massages. They do a really great job at creating the atmosphere (ethereal & soothing). The massage room is at the back of the salon and is very quiet. I went to Gaia during three of my four years spent at K-State. While the salon is a bit pricey, I think the service and quality of work make the amount reasonable. Penny was my designer and she rocked! She kept track of what she had done to my hair in the past and was a pleasure to be around. There were multiple times that I just let her just do what she thought would look best for my hair, and I always left loving my style. The scalp massage to start the appointment was great, and the receptionists were friendly and offered me a beverage (try the tea, it's delicious!). I moved away after college and am struggling to find a salon I love as much as I loved Gaia. I'm thinking of making an appointment soon and making the two-hour trip to Manhattan because they are just. that. good. I highly recommend this salon! read more

5 stars to entire experience! I've waited to write this review because I wanted to see and make sure that my hair cut grows out nicely where I can still style it easy after a month. Like most women, I am very couscous and nervous when it comes to finding someone new to cut my hair. Being new in Manhattan from LA for a job project, I've turned to Yelp to find a place to cut my hair. Gaia had the most reviews, therefore I've called in! I've explained to lady who answered the phone that I am nervous, have very limited time and someone who is the best in the salon has to manage to cut my hair in no longer than 30 minutes. I didn't need a blow dry. She assured me that every stylist at Gaia went through their special training, therefore all are considered to be amazing! Danielle was available to cut my hair at my needed hour. She blew my mind away from how fast she can cut hair... and so darn well!!! Very sweet and calming, she turned disaster on my head into ongoing compliments I still receive after more than a month. I'm going back soon, no questions asked! Outstanding service! read more

Terrible. I went to this salon because I heard it was the best in town. I was prepared to pay more to receive specialized services and was excited to go. On my first appointment, I was told my stylist was running a little late. I had no idea who she was, but a half an hour later, a stylist and woman came out talking about buying artwork. The stylist asked to see the artwork and so the woman went out to her vehicle and brought in 5 large canvassed pieces. The stylist and woman looked at them and chatted awhile about them. They made arrangements to speak more later, then the stylist came over and introduced herself to me as my stylist! She then gave me a tour of the facility and an overview of their products. I suppose I did get a short scalp massage with scented oil. At this point, it was roughly 45 minutes into my scheduled appointment time- and I was to have an hour. I was told that the stylist would spend ample time evaluating my hair and give me the best cut possible. She spent less than a minute looking at my hair and then recommended all of their overpriced products. At the 50 minute mark, her next appointment had arrived and she was just then asking me how I wanted my hair cut. I told her that I wanted an angled bob with longer layers in the front and really short in the back (I had shoulder length hair at the time). I even brought pictures. She then told me she didn't feel comfortable "cutting all of my hair off" and tried to convince me to just get a trim. I actually had to argue with her to cut my hair! She finally started cutting and before I realized what she was doing, she had cut my bangs and longer layers in front!! She hadn't listened to anything I told her or showed her. She hurried through the cut and styling and I felt obligated to leave without even really looking at the results because the next poor woman was waiting for her appointment. When I got home, my friend asked me if I had seen the back of my hair...because it looked terrible (and I hadn't even told her what a bad experience it was). It wasn't blended together or anything. She also left quite a few long strands that should have been cut off. I had to go to a different salon a couple days later just to fix what she had done. It was honestly the worst salon experience that I've ever had. I will never return. read more

I only get my trims and style from Rachel Whitelock but she is leaving soon. So I am back for a salon hunt after going down my long list of X salon finally I got a spot at Gaia and found my stylish Krystal/Crystal, her name suits her she is a hidden gem lol. The best salon around Junction and Manhattan. They have the best costumer service same level as the Metro Salon. They listen to what you want to do, give you advises, took time to know what treatment suits your hair type and took their time to style your hair... Every penny is worth it.. I am so happy now I don't need to wait for months to get my haircut... Kristal really did a fantastic job not just cutting my hair right but also a good over all satisfaction..
