I have to say that I've only ever been in here for the annual National Winter Ales Festival, held…read morehere for the last few years as it is big enough to cope with the numbers attending. The organisation, by Manchester CAMRA branch, is superb. This year, for the first time, we went on Friday night - the busiest slot. When we arrived, just after 7pm, the queue was along two sides of the building, about 300m. We actually got into the foyer inside 35 minutes, which I thought was quite something! Once inside, there are plenty of signs and directions, the toilets are reasonable, considering the numbers using them and the stewards all work very well. The beers are really something - no-one could want a greater choice! The loss of a point isn't really down to the Building or the organisers, but merely the access. We left at 9.30pm in order to get back to Warrington (normally a 45 minute journey) in time to help close up our pub. The metrolonk was excellent but, on arriving at Picadilly, we found that there are no trains to Liverpool after 10 at night! Not a good way to encourage visitors. We won't be going for any nights out in Manchester in future, no matter who is on at the venues, as it can cost around £65 to get home by taxi!

The place itself is lovely. The seating is very comfortable, and the atmosphere is great. We have such a fantastic time. The acting is superb, we end up crying laughing. The price of the Panto is expensive - about £15 a ticket - but we pay it because they are so funny. The actors also sing and play musical instruments which also enhances the performance. The bar is well organised - and you can have a drink before the performance and during the interval.

Some of the staff are like gestapo when it comes to taking drinks back into the hall, although you are allowed to take drinks you cant take glass in but at the time I went the bar was only serving in glasses which was really annoying.

Unfortunately, Warrington has a lamentable record in preserving good quality, historical buildings and this is no exception. Going by past experience, this wonderful venue will be starved of funding until there is a health and safety issue. It will then be closed for safety reasons until someone deems enough time has passed to sell it off to developers without too much fuss being generated. This hall has witnessed many world class acts in its time my favourite being the Saw Doctors, but then, I'm biased. In the early 1960's a little known local band called The Beatles played here, followed by most of the singers, bands and entertainers of the time. It still has a wonderfully homely feel, even when full of noisy audience. Just as an aside, the position on the map is very misleading as Parr Hall is nowhere near Bold Street, it is on Palmyra Square itself, but is simplicity itself to find. Look for the signs saying cultural quarter as there isn't very much culture to choose from! Map marker now in place.

GRUB events are fast becoming a stalwart feature in my personal (and professional) events calendar…read more After announcing their monthly appearance at Runaway Brewery, they're also confirmed at Sadler's Yard for a short series of events. And I'm lucky enough to have this as part of my work! Located in the shadow of the CIS Tower, right between Shudehill and Manchester Victoria Station, Sadler's Yard is a modern square with plenty going for it. Easy access to public transport and a bit of a suntrap when the sun is out for starters! The Spring Feast installment of these events hosted a number of local food traders, both fresh and dry goods, plus arty crafty stalls and some activities. We ate a 'nduja sausage pizza from Honest Crust - rude not too as it was a rare appearance from them in the city centre - a snack box from Fancy an Indian?, and a marinated feta and pepper taco salad bowl from El Kantina. Drinks were predominantly beer related, including the lovely Antipodean from Marble Brewery, but they also had prosecco, wine and mixers available. My sweet tooth was totally satisfied by a cheesecake and chocolate brownie from S'mores Please, though I must admit food envy from Emily B.'s brownies and s'mores combination! There was plant pot painting for the kids available early in the afternoon, followed by laughter yoga (you have to see it to believe it) and gin tasting. Each activity was fully booked, showing people's enthusiasm for getting stuck in, and it was consistently busy despite the rain - and thanks to the covered seating! Any excuse to try some new food and meet some new people. Well done GRUB.

An amazing atmosphere at the Grub Carnival. Some old school swing dancing going on to some awesome…read moremusic, beer was flowing and top notch grub being served. I loved getting involved with the circus lessons however I was surrounded by kids, also my friends wouldn't let me get my face painted but hey it was still great fun! My favourite part of the carnival was the opportunity to shape your own copper spoon, I was handed a piece of copper and a hammer and off I went! My spoon was awful but a lovely token to take away from the afternoon. There was so,e lovely little stalls. The whole event was beautifully thought out and I can't wait for the next GRUB event.

For some reason the setting made need feel like in The Witches at that hotel laden with red carpet and old worldly staff. Anyway I was not feeling the afternoon tea so I opted for the mushroom soup which was fresh and delightful..it did need warning up a touch though. The rest of ther ladies had the afternoon tea which despite me feeling full regretted my decision! The quality of the sandwiches , scones and cakes were immense and service was attentive. It is places like this that I wish my nan was both well enough and close by to attend places like this:) apparently they do murder mystery nights too.. anyway it is a touch of class to Stockport!

What an absolute diamond in the rough the Plaza Theatre is (sorry Stockport but your town centre…read moreisn't the prettiest is it really?!). Seeing the Grade II* Listed building lit up at night added to its grandeur, it's literally the first thing you can see all the way up Wellington Road. Heading there for the Banff Mountain Film Festival (http://www.banff-uk.com/) as it was touring the UK and Ireland before heading on across the world, it proved to be a truly gorgeous setting for around 1,200 people to sit back and watch three hours-worth of extreme sports movies. I doff my cap to the restorers of this place - with the neon lighting juxtaposed against the 1930s interior. This is a jaw-dropping place to spend an evening, a million miles away from the typical out-of-town multiplexes. Tip: the box office is accessed from the street through a door to the far left of the front of the theatre. Tip: the small tubs of vanilla ice-cream sold during the interval are superb.

Prices for shows are very reasonable and can be booked in advance. Popular shows get booked up very quickly so be quick.

The atmosphere was terrific…read more The venue itself needs a bit of TLC and it's a shame the Capital of Culture funds thought it more important to build a shopping centre (yawn) and not throw money at a theatre that provides local plays which from my experience everybody can enjoy. A great night out. A great laugh. I would definitely go again.
