Found out about this brewery and barbecue restaurant in Galena to get some local beers and lunch. Galena Brewing Company has been a long time favorite around here for hanging out. It has quite a few beers on tap to choose from in a few styles. As for the food it's pretty average. There's a lot of meaty things. Crowded place with a bar area and tables for groups. It's best known for the beers obviously. There's a pretty great variety on tap. A lot more in bottles and cans. It's about $7 a pint. Best we had of these was the Oktoberfest. This is a Marzen lager that's rich and smooth. As for the food it's mostly meaty choices. It's about $5 to get the Sweet Potato Waffle Fries. The rest of the menu has smoked brisket and pulled pork so the place is meaty. Got to say the beers are the best things to get here. It's closed Mondays and Tuesdays. FOOD REVIEW ONLY Galena Brewing Company is located on the northern part of Main Street in downtown Galena. Upon entering, the hostess was a bit off putting and unwelcoming. We were sat at a high top in the main dining area. The inside was rather bare: some brewery equipment in a corner, and some tv screens placed on walls. Our server was very nice but hustling as it must had been the time of day where servers take turns going on break. We saw him running for all the tables in the restaurant. We got waters and ordered all our food at once which he kindly timed out for us. We started with the 1 Lb Pretzel that came with a double serving of cheese as well as some sweet honey mustard. The pretzel portion was huge to say the least! It was definitely the highlight of the meal and great to share! We later got the Mac & Cheese Bites and Brew Haus Cheeseburger. They have a neat view of the brewery equipment that they use to make their in house beer. He gave us some beer flight recommendations. We tried the Farmers blonde, Forbidden Apple, Queen Bee and Hoppy general. I'm a light beer fan. First off the decor was very nice, the seating area was roomy and not too bright and not too dark for a place with limited windows. Just like you would expect for a brew house. Not too loud but probably not a place for kids. They did have a gift shop to take home a few beverages, shirts and glasses. There is room for large groups. Service was a little slow but not troublesome. The server was helpful but not too pushy. We had a couple adult beverages and a sample or two and we like what we tried. Unfortunately this place is a pass all day long. While the server was friendly and ultimately sat us in a room without the blairring music, the food and beer was mediocre at best. Now I can see why there seemed to be a wait everywhere else except here. I don't think they have fryers here as the cheese curds are baked and they don't have fries. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and beer cheese soup. I also ordered their Hazy IPA and Nut Brown Ale. The food needed seasoning for sure. I had to ask for Tabasco sauce to finish it all. The portion size is generous so we didn't walk away hungry. The beer seems to be brewed for the masses, so it will lack complexity and profile. It served its purpose. The food did come out rather quickly and if you have children it may be a decent place to go. Just temper down any expectations you have and understand that this place is won't knock your socks off. Our experience was. . .okay. Granted, we were there as part of a post-wedding brunch and it just seemed like things were unnecessarily complicated. It was like they weren't prepared to handle such a large group and it was weird because we all paid our own way. There wasn't any comped food or drinks. They had an appetizer buffet but it was darn near $30 per person and the offerings weren't that great. I had the breakfast burger and I expected a runny egg but it was over hard, which was fine but if I'd know, I would have specified. The rest of the burger didn't have a ton of flavor. Several of us chose to do beer flights and the server did a nice job explaining them and ensuring we all got the right things. I really enjoyed all 4 of the beers that were selected for my flight. For food, I went with the brew haus burger because it sounded delicious and it was decent- typical brewery burger cooked how I asked. The place was busy when we were there- but it was clean and our server was attentive. I don't know that I would rush back- but I'd certainly come back if invited. read more

We did a mostly beer stop here while visiting Galena after hiking at a nearby state park. First let me comment that downtown Galena seems fun. They have Main Street closed and there's seating for the restaurants. We had to sit inside, but it's a nice space with a lot of old photos to look at. We ordered roasted cheese curds in addition to our be. These were quite good. They come with ranch dressing, which is a nice touch, but not needed. The cheese curds stand alone. We tried Farmer's, miner's treasure, Belgian Trapp and DeLIGHT. We enjoyed each and will try to make it back here when we need a full meal. For now, thanks for the good beer and the roasted cheese curds. Our taste test winner: Farmer's. We took a growler of it home. However, Belgian Trapp was also tasty. After a memorable trip along the Mississippi River, we arrived in Galena ready for some food and ended up in the historic district. Galena Brewing got the nod, as we were pretty casual after a long trip. First off, our server was outstanding. She got us squared away quickly and brought a levity that was appreciated. Ok. Let's say a word about that pretzel. Have to say TOP 5 pretzels I've ever tasted. And one of those was in Vienna. Piping hot and ginormous. Fluffy inside with just the right amount of crunch. Enough for the table to share, to be sure. I just sampled one of their beers, the Anna Belle's IPA. Was refreshing with just the right amount of bitterness. And yes, I tend to be an Eat Local/Drink Local kind of guy, so it makes it much easier to recommend these types of businesses. What's more, I enjoy eating in a space with an abundance of history. My family and I are back in Galena and we ate here once before and the food was mediocre at best but we wanted to give them one more try and they were the only restaurant that didn't have a wait and my daughter needed to use the restroom. I should've known by the fact that other restaurants right next-door were jampacked and there was literally almost nobody in the restaurant at the time of entrance (bad sign). The waitress was very friendly and kind and we got seated right away but we were told and reminded by the waitress that this is only her second day which to me there's no point in customers knowing this. We ordered a BLT salad a burger and we asked for french fries since my daughter was only hungry for french fries only to be told that the bar/brewing Company does not sell french fries. I have never heard of a bar burger joint that did not sell french fries but nonetheless we compromised and got her potato chips. Sadly the potato chips were the best part of the dining experience. About four minutes after ordering the cheeseburger the burger was presented to my girlfriend which was about 3 inches thick and drier than shoe leather and clearly frozen and prepackaged. The BLT salad came out about 10 minutes after everyone else got their food as I was told that the waitress forgot to add my order in. The BLT salad that I received had about two pieces of crumbled bacon on the top which you'll be able to see by the photo I've included along with a massive glob of greasy grimy Mayo infested pasta which took up over half of the salad. The baked chicken tenders were tasty and one of the only reasonable options however sadly they only give you enough chicken tenders to feed a miniaturized child. Please do not be fooled by the fact that they make their own beer and that there is literally no way to get in unless you have just crossed the Sahara desert and are desperately in need of a drink and shoe....this is a restaurant that you simply want to drink at and swipe the flies away do not eat here I can only imagine what the kitchen must look like. read more

Great atmosphere, terrible service. We (a party of three) stopped in on a Saturday night and sat at the bar. There was a live performer so there was a decent crowd but it was far from packed. The server was less than friendly but served our first round of drinks promptly. That's where our service ended. We were not acknowledged, served, greeted, anything, after that. There were several other people at the bar and they were offered refills. The server was standing talking to coworkers. Our drinks were obviously gone. Nothing. We asked for our check and it took an additional five minutes to get that. We left after one drink and likely won't be back. Went here twice. Once for beer and once for lunch/food. If you're looking for the best beer in Galena, this is your spot. Wide selection of fresh and flavorful beers on tap. Good bar practices (clean glassware, clean taps and cold temperature). Service at bar is also good. Great job from the brew master and the folks producing the beer. On the food side of the house, it's like a completely different operation. I was embarrassed for the kitchen. Hands down the worst burger I've ever been served. So overcooked it was dry and hard to the point that it hurt the roof of my mouth. I was not asked when I ordered how I wanted the burger cooked so the default must be super extra double well done. Grilled cheese had one "triangle" of cheese and looked more like a bacon sandwich. We had to deconstruct the sandwich to see the triangle cheese that didn't even cover the bread. Nobody in the kitchen spoke english and I doubt they have been trained to cook basic American food. A grilled cheese is something that any chef or line cook should be able to prepare. Embarrassing. To owner: train your kitchen staff better and maintain some basic food standards. Such a shame to see a nice menu so poorly executed. On the service side, quite spotty. On both visits, we were not greeted or acknowledged by anyone in the first 10 minutes to the point that we went to the bar to get our drinks thinking there was no table service. The service side at the bar was awesome. Bartender was fast, friendly made us feel welcome. Bottom line, our group wont be back. At least not for food. But I'd come back and knock down a few pints and listen to some live music. In the Galena space, they pretty much have no competition in that area. A lot of waiting around. We walked in and it was about 10-15 min before someone even acknowledged we were there and there was a wait to be seated sign. The place was not busy at all. Another lady, already waiting, gave up and walked out which is what we should have done. Once seated, the drinks came pretty quick. However, all we ordered was a flatbread pizza and an order of chips. It was 45 minutes before the order came out. We asked for the check when the food arrived as we saw another table we're done for over 15 min before they finally got the check. This place was not busy but it appeared the kitchen is the hold up and that they may not have had an efficient system for service. I kind of felt sorry for the server. We had arrived about 12:20 and we were able to pay at about 2:05 pm. Oh, they do charge extra for credit card use but it is not posted on the menu or in any other spot that we noticed. Maria was our server and she was so friendly and attentive. We tried the bratwurst and the beer nachos and both were delicious! While here we also decided to do the brewery tour. It was $8 per person for tour. Troy is the head brewmaster and so knowledgeable about beer and how its made. He put the fancy German and scientific terms into layman's terms so that we could understand. Its a small brewery but a lot of great tasting beers. Best thing about the visit was our server Carter who was polite and attentive until he gave us his manager's canned response to our issue. My wife was okay with the food and my son did like it a lot. However they switched the patties doneness on my son and my burgers. I asked if they could heat up mine a little more medium well. Carter was right on it. 10 minutes later it was brought out. When I ordered I asked what was on it and stated I just wanted lettuce and tomato. It came out slathered in mayo. My sons had it to and ate it even though he hadn't expected it but he likes mayo. I decided not to eat it and told Carter that the first issue wasn't a big deal but not telling me when asked about the ingredients was not good and returned it. When the bill came I expected it to not be on the bill. It was I asked him when he returned and he said they had to charge us since they used the resources. I asked to speak to a manager, no one came but Carter came by after a few minutes and said he found a manager willing to take it off the bill. What a great place with kind people, fun environment and great food! My friend and I were looking for a drink before our dinner plans. We stopped here and were pleasantly surprised. Only brave souls can order a glass of wine at a brewery. We are such souls. We were on a wine trip all day and I just can't switch over to Beer! The bartender kindly served us our Cabernets in these fun glasses! Wish we had more time to delve into their appetizers. First-The Drinks Spicy Bloody Mary and IPA (Anna Belle's ?) we're very good. Food- Just don't. The burgers have absolutely no seasoning-at all! The cheese curds had good flavor but they have a weird breading to them and are not fried, it says "roasted", but I wouldn't call it that either.
