I went to high school here for two years, freshman and sophomore year. I felt like a lot of the kids here don't care and it causes other students to not work as hard. The school is actually really nice and I love LOVE how it is right by the water. Teachers here are nice. read more

My son just graduated and my daughter is a Freshman! We thought it was a great school for my son and so far so good for my daughter. Every school as it's challenges, but have been impressed with admin and teachers. My son had a issue his Freshmen year and the admin was very responsive. He did say, that the admin can be a bit slow responding dealing with just students and is faster when parents get involved. read more

Even though I spent my high school years here, I felt like a recluse. I just felt dejected all the time. I don't know why but I felt like I didn't really belong to anything. Call it teenage agnst, but I felt terrible all the time - like the world was turn upside down and I'm falling through space with only my teeth barely hanging on. I joined the most socially depressing jobs. I volunteered to tutor students who were in ESL. I volunteered for an afterschool librarian job. I played in a jazz band. I even ran for office unsuccessfully. It was a slap in the face really. I was told to not run by the assitant principal. A fixed election in all it's tainted glory. Not only was I deeply offended, it really sank my moral as a student at this school. In short a short list: -Had a fight with two big kids trying to mug me. -Fought with a pen (literally in self defense). -Starved myself. -Won a couple of scholarships. -Dissed all the girls. -Met my very first gay person who became a friend (I'm not gay). -Was a self-engaged hermit. -Was a democrat intern. -Was a journalist (by far not the most brilliant). It was a harsh lesson in reality for me. In contrast, my college was awesome. read more

Wow. This school have a lot of dark secrets. Lot of bad reviews can confirm that. In past they won't help identified a deceased boy that went to that school that was found dead. What the heck!? They won't provide informations to the cops that tried to ask for help. The heck!? Research that school more before sending your children there. Yikes. Live very close to Washington HS and wanted to go there so that I wouldn't have to go far on the bus in the morning. Out of the 5 high schools that I went to, I would have to say that I love G-Houseee the most. It was one of the best experiences of my life.. Seeing as my mom always tried to make me a "private school kid" (=/) she FINALLY sent me to a public school, and through my whole journey of private schools since kindergarden, I could say the happiest that I ever was, was when I went to Gal. I made a lot of friends of different cultures and, surprisingly enough, I actually liked the fact that I was one of the only white people in the whole school... There were a couple of Russians like myself but, I still think that it was awesome that there were so little of us in such a hugeeee school.. (seeing as I was surrounded by white/Russian kids my wholeeeeeee life.. it got annoying. My favorite teacher - Mr. Borell.. Or, however you spell it.. He is freaking awesome and ALWAYS made me enjoy coming to his class. He has a good way with his teaching skills. Made some great friends that I am still talking to - even now in college.. I am glad that I had the chance to meet them.. I give Gal a 10, not a 5. AND, the location was the best, it was great going to Fisherman's wharf and Pier 39 after class after school.. Not somewhere where I had the chance to get to often at all until I went to this school. read more

As per San Francisco Unified School Distinct standard practice, graduating elementary and middle school kids from within the district have the option of filling out forms that allow you to select your top preferences for the school you'd like to attend. Apparently, my parents selected Washington and Wallenberg as the preferred schools for me to continue my education. Since i didn't get my school of choice coming out of Elementary school (Marina being #1 choice) I expected to at least get my selection this time. Wrong. I was assigned to Galileo, at the time a school known for students and their shenanigans, suspected gangs roaming within the school, and not really recognized for any type of academic achievement. Day 1 of Galileo went without a hitch. As I suspected, I attended a school with a vastly dominated Asian population with groups of other minorities spread out among the student body. This is typically the basic make up of a SFUSD public school, with at least 2000 students attending this school. When I first attended in 2004, the school was somewhat showing signs of wear an tear but when I graduated in 2008, they made significant improvements and remodeled certain aspects of the building. A new artificial turf football field was installed, there is better accessibility around the school for physically impaired people, and they completely changed the courtyard. Course wise they offer classes that you'd expect to see at other schools from your basic science courses to honors courses to AP courses. They had good teachers while I was there an generally it wasn't too challenging for me as High School should be rather easy seeing as how you can easily graduate by doing the minimum and maintaining C's as getting an F really requires work and dedication to failing. Being called Galileo Academy, you are also able to choose to enroll in a 2 year program such AOIT, The Health Academy, a Hospitality program, and others such as the four year AVID program. I was in both the Health Academy and AVID as one helped learn some basic EMT techniques, which counted as 9.5 college units, and AVID meant to help prepare you for college and assisting in the application process. All the teachers i had class with were nice, helpful and of course there's always a couple who make it interesting. Galileo also has a tradition in Sports being the most winning full football program in SF and excelling in a couple of other sports. Sports are a must to gain a good high school experience and the school staff such as counselors were all very helpful. By the time I graduated, Galileo was on it's way up rivaling Lowell and Washington in Academics. This school is also located right by the Pier for an excellent experience during lunch (or if you decide to skip out on class). With so much around, it's tough going to school everyday. Yet It is a school worth attending and will leave you with a good High School Experience. Any other school in SF is a joke. G-House is the place to be. read more

Technically, I wanted to go to Wash, like the others that I knew. However, I'm glad I got placed here instead. I wouldn't have met some of the people I met there had the school system not decided to do everything by lottery (which I believe to be completely ridiculous because there's still not much diversity there: the supposed reason as to why they started doing the lottery). In a lot of my classes, it was predominantly Chinese... not Asian, but Chinese. Not to say that was bad, because it wasn't. However, the school system lottery idea didn't seem to work... My years here... were both awful and surprisingly pleasant. The teachers I've had for English and Math were very good (my favorites being Ring, Moffett, and Heskin). However, there are a few teachers who were a bit confusing... and less than impartial. However, until you find a group of friends who will accept you for who you are, school life can be torture (and extremely lonely or depressing). However, when you find out who your friends are, school becomes bearable. I guess that's kind of true with all schools though... However, I wouldn't do it again... Revisit teachers, yes; but I wouldn't be able to go through that again... read more

I went here for two years before I transferred to Washington and I love this school ! Plenty of school spirit . Classes are fun and I had pretty good teachers who taught me a lot . Good food around this area for lunch too . I miss this school . read more

4 stars because it is my alma mater. School is vastly Asian and you hear at least a good dozen different dialects of other languages floating about. The school has improved in terms of standard of education since I was there. Now a magnet school. Nice area for a a school, easy way to cut class and get into Chinatown in about 15 mins. Before I went Galileo, I dreaded even the name, especially for all the gangs of Wah Chings believed to be there. I wanted so much to go to Washington High along with 90% of my friends. I was the only one that ended up in this school. But I'm glad though. It was not as bad as what rumors made it out to be. I made a lot of lifelong friends whos became more like brothers. It had spirit and excellent teachers (Hibbard: AP Physics & Merlo: Calculus) 2 of the BEST teachers I've known, but eventually lured away to Lowell High after I graduated. The football team won 3 City Championships. Those were the GLORY days! Unfortunately, from my last visit...the GREAT football field became more like a trailer park. New teachers, new principals. Good thing is that it's become more of an academic school now reknown for science and math. read more

I went to Galileo in the late 80's. I remember upon freshman orientation, riding up on the 30 Stockton and thinking it looked like a prison. And the appearance somewhat reinforced it's reputation as a battlefield for the various Chinese youth gangs that patrolled the school throughout the late 70's. It didn't help that a kid got a hatchet to the face a few years prior to my arrival. It was a typical public school education. It seemed most of the teachers half-assed it and I made it through by just doing my work, being quiet, and not being delinquent. Most of the kids were either African American or Asian immigrants. Maybe there was one or two white kids in my class and they were only there because they were impoverished. I recall during Social Studies class we talked about how you had to be American born to be President of the US and only three (including myself) out of twenty-something students were eligible. I don't know how Gal is like now. I drive by it and it now adorned with these "Academy of Science/Math" banners. The football team which was a powerhouse during my stint at Gal went winless last year (perhaps due to the gentrification of the nearby housing projects). It wasn't cool to have come out of Gal ( I always describe it as the school OJ Simpson attended) compared to Wash or Lincoln or even Lowell, but it was nice to say we had an awesome football team. read more

Goodness. Galileo has recently torn up their field and added a handful of what appear to be portable classrooms. They are the ugliest of ugly eyesores. I feel bad for the kids that have to sit in them too. They don't appear to have any windows at all! YIKES! It used to be a fairly attractive public school, now it's the neighborhood trailer park. 1 star for the trailers. 5 for the original architecture. read more

I shouldn't have read this review. It just reminded me of how horrendous the ceremony actually was. I went to Lincoln's graduation and it was MUCH MUCH smoother. G-House! :] Attended all four years. It's okay but most of the teacher I got were cool. Very fun and active. I enjoyed being in the Academy of Information Technology and Media Arts Pathway. Although the media arts teacher can blow up in anger, the class is fun. Didn't like the people in the ASB, thought they did a horrible job especially when organizing assemblies or activities. They always pack it full and never leave extra time for mishaps. During lunch, lines are packed so a 10-20 minutes wait if your in the back. Mostly populated with Asians who cut in line (the ones that aren't from the US from what I can see). Security cameras everywhere which makes you feel more safer. Offers a lot of clubs and sport teams are fun. One thing I didn't like is waking up at around 7 just to get to school. If you have to stay at school, it really drains you of your energy. Average sleep I got was 5-6. read more

I graduated way back in the 70's and it was cool then and it is cool now. I didn't get to go to my Class Reunion as I'm unemployed, broke and working at Walmart. So be it. I raised my family and they are doing great! Everybody's working except me. Well, at least I'm working part time. Reason I didn't go to the Reunion this year is also I didn't wanna bump into my ex. Ewwww. Anyway, Gal is a great school. I had to go there as it was in my stupid district and all my buddies went to Mission but I had to go to Gal. But it worked out just fine. Back in the 70's every guy wanted to be Asian so the school has cool Asian kids. Just don't call a Chinese person a Japanese and vise versa. You will get told off. The teachers were cool and let you get by with stupid stuff long as you did your homework. It took me 3 buses to get there and 3 buses to get back. It was cool because I did my homework on the buses and by the time I got home it was all done. Just remember, you got just three years left to learn something before you graduate. Don't be like me--I didn't really push myself. I really did when my mom said at 18 she's kicking me outta the house. So my junior and senior year I worked a job after school twice a week and saved my cash. Back then everything was cheap (1/2 gallon of milk was 52 cents, you can eat at Mickey D's for $1--a cheeseburger, small fry, and a Coke) yeah I know... So it was good. Apply yourself, invest in your future cause you have to depend on yourself to make it, don't do drugs, don't get arrested, pay your tickets, don't speed in the streets, don't slap the cops in the face, don't yell and tell off your parents, and graduate and live a good life. You will go well if you don't get dead, so don't do that. Here's to a happy life. Make it work. And you finally get to grow up. Oh, and make babies when you have the cash. Don't have them first--it's way too hard. You CAN do it, but it's harder when you are broke. read more

I just read a terrible article re: Don Papa, the head baseball coach at Galileo High School. I am disturbed because the article said Papa ridiculed an Asian player on the team by yelling at him in a fake Asian accent. This is totally unacceptable behavior for a person who is supposed to be a leader for his students. I feel Papa owes that student, that student's parents, and the Asian community an apology. As far as I know, this has not been done. When your students commit stupid acts they are disciplined. What about your educators? read more

I toured the school for the 2013/2014 school year. The biology class was awesome (students were watching the teacher dissect a cadavera). On the other hand, the students in the chemistry class seemed to be bored stiff. The biggest negative was the computer science class: 30 boys and -0- girls. When the teacher was asked about this, his response was "girls don't like computers". Really? read more

i don't know why everyone thinks Galileo is a bad school, in general. I think its more based on personal experience. if you put yourself out there to learn, you really do excel. The only complaints i have is that the counselors don't do a very good job at placing students in the A-G academic requirement classes for those that are planning UC's and Private Colleges. read more

gal's a good school the classes are fairly evened out im still attending galileo high school and i am going to graduate in a few more semesters :] overall the school is mostly asian but diversity is amongst us as well so its a overall average school. the foot ball field i think is still getting remade? im not quite sure but yeah galileo is an a okay school read more
