I was here for the sunrise this morning and while it was too cloudy for the sun to break through, it was still very nice. Here in the offseason it is pleasant though cold. Strong onshore winds keeps the sand and salt blowing! There is a free beach access to the right of the Pier though it's not handicapped accessible. It leads to a firm, flat and pretty beach though the amount of pizza and ice cream and beachwear spots around suggest that it's going to be a bit more Atlantic City than I would care for. Thankfully, all of that is closed for the season in mid-March. But it does mean the parking is free! [Review 19397 overall - 971 in South Carolina - 367 of 2023.]

This is our destination for our annual family beach trip as we have a beach house down here. This beach is about 11 miles from Myrtle Beach. I appreciate how less popular it is compared to Myrtle during this pandemic as everyone is easily spread out and social distancing. There are push showers near the beach entrance to rinse off. The only thing that would make the experience better was if there was a boardwalk, but the beach is small so it's not really suitable. There are some shops nearby though.

Garden City is an excellent beach, not too crowded this time of year. The only exception is all the umbrella and chair rental people taking up all the prime spots. For people like me who take my own stuff, unless you get down here real early, you're forced to look at all the blue umbrellas.

    It's crowded.

It's been two years since I wrote a review of Garden City Beach and nothing has changed. It is still one of the best beach areas around. It's winter here and the beach is almost empty. There are power walkers, dog walkers and people just strolling along the edge of the surf. In the summer you can look out over a sea of beach umbrellas. Grab an ice cream from the popsicle pusher. Do the shag (the state dance of South Carolina) to beach music. Remember dogs are only allowed during certain summer times. There are fireworks galore during the Fourth of July. The best time to come - in September. Most children are back in school, rental rates drop and the ocean water is still warm enough for you to take a dip. Would I come back here? You know I will. I'll catch you on the flip side.

    Chill time has started..

Garden City rocks! My family and I have been coming to this area for years, and we love it. We're already looking forward to next year.

Beautiful beach with lots of sea shells. I came the last week of August and the beach wasn't crowded.

Ask the Community - Garden City Beach

We usually stay farther north...hows the water in gardencity is it still shallow for the little ones?...?wife likes myrtle i like obx hoping for a little bit of both...just a new place i know nothing about...also hows the fishing here

Yes, the water close to shore is shallow enough for the little ones. I have seen people fishing from the shore and from the pier. You must have a license for fishing. As far as catching fish, well I’m sure you know how that goes.

I did my research ahead of time and knew they were what I was looking for. I wanted a sunrise kayak by experienced people who will not sell me gimmick and promises, just straight up the service I want and preferably a private tour. This last bit, of course, seemed impossible so I would have been willing to settle for non-private until I found their services! Yes, private. As small as 2 people in a tour. For us, it was only my husband and I. Shawn and Toni Rae are fantastic people. I booked ahead of time but was told since I wanted an open ocean kayak, the day could change based on tide conditions which is totally understandable for everyone's safety. Fortunately for us, the whole week was open since we were intending to catch the sunrise and there's nothing to do at 5am anyway. The day of, we drove over to their address, signed waivers, left our things for safe keeping at their house and headed to the beach. After getting our kayaks situated and safety instructions were given, including how to enter and exit the ocean safely, we were off. While we've done kayaking plenty of times on lakes, we've only ever done open ocean kayaking once before this time. Yes, it is more difficult and you do need to follow the instructions so you don't hurt yourself or flip your kayak. Shawn and Toni Rae were very helpful and clear with their instructions. He was also close by to make sure my husband and I got on and passed the waves and paddled safely away from the beach. We waited about 15 minutes before sunrise and he took a bunch of beautiful photos and sent them to us. No additional fees for the photos! After the photos, we headed back to shore and successfully made it back safely. The biggest take away from the experience though was that, it was truly exhilarating. We've both been kayaking on the Pacific ocean before by ourselves but I don't think we would have been brave enough to do it in the dark, before daylight. This experience was truly one of a kind and we had the best time!
