Despite the 18th century building and surrounds, there was little romance to be found at the Gretna…read moreHall Hotel. For us, it served as a practical way to break up the journey north, and if you need to do just that en route to the highlands then you will find Gretna Hall Hotel within touching distance of the A74M, and it does the basics in a perfunctory manner. Checking in was smooth and efficient, having already booked online and there was ample on-site parking. Our room seemed a million miles from reception along tartan carpeted corridors. Said chamber was host to a rather short bed which I had to push forward a little way from the wall to accommodate my long shanks. The room itself somehow felt a bit cramped and I was relieved to be staying there only the one night. Despite the look of being modernised, I think that was as much a gesture as anything else, with a contemporary and rather urban styled headboard leading the way and fixed to the wall so as to form a bizarre and unjustified centrepiece to the room. The night was humid and the open window allowed the steady stream of traffic on the nearby A74M to gurgle and whoosh across the ripples of my restless sleep. The shower worked. It was in the bath. It got me clean. I dried myself. Skipped breakfast and left. Outside, the 18th century part of the building positively glowed in the Saturday morning sunlight. A postman tumbled past and shadows yawned from the ample branches of trees across the lawn. As we walked to the car, the Old Smithy stood across on the other side of the car park, vying with Gretna Hall for the title of World's Whitest Building. Are the Borders boring in and of themselves or is it just the sheer hard luck of happening to exist between the Highlands and the Lake District, two of the more astonishing parts of the UK?

Excellent hotel, obviously just had a refurbishment which you can clearly see. Lovely staff who…read morewere very helpful, especially to my husband who has walking difficulties at the moment. Gables Hotel - Nice rooms, they serve their purpose

I was attending a wedding and as this was the venue a few of us chose to stay here…read more The rooms served their purpose, but you could hear a lot of noise as people where walking past the room door due to squeaky floor boards. The food was passable but nothing special I had roast beef for the main course and could tell that it was the bought in prepared cooked sliced beef, that resembled more chewiness as a rubber band. Nice hotel in great location, but that's where it ends.

We have just returned from a one night stay at the hotel, Two rooms booked …read more The rooms, staff and surrounds were excellent but we will not return or suggest hotel on tripadvisor as the food was extremely poor. We had a very expensive bar meal, which was very poor quality and obvious frozen food used. The choice was a very poor for a hotel, not even fish and chips available on limited menu! It seems to us that profit was only concern of hotel, however they are making a big mistake, if they had decent food would have had us and many other guests return. many times. The hotel its self is very nice and clean. The breakfast was just as poor as evening bar meal such a poor choice. No porridge, fresh fruit salad, yogurts, selection of breads and cheese? Terrible pre made poor cold tasting coffee? Watered down juices I think too.? At £11.95 its a complete rip off, although we paid £8, it was poor Food is what makes a hotel for locals and returned repeat business, unfortunately their food standard this will never happen. Its a shame as they have so much potential. I am told food/ accomodation is run by 2 separate companies, this is crazy and believe they should have a business meeting and address situation as have great opportunities to improve standard. I would suggest they reconsider your partnership with food management as obviously ruining hotel business. We feel very let down and completely ripped off on food side for what we got in return. Their is plenty of decent hotels out there that offer excellent food, avoid at all costs unless you want completely ripped off.
