Located conveniently on Strawberry Ave next to the Emergency Vet and SPCA, it's easy to find and has a good-sized area for dogs to stretch their legs. The park is split into large and small dog sections, but in practice, that division isn't always followed, so it's worth keeping an eye out depending on your dog's comfort level. The space is big enough for off-leash zoomies while still being small enough to keep your dog in view. They do provide poop bags, though the supply can be hit or miss--best to bring your own just in case. Also, be warned after rainstorms--the park gets muddy fast. A towel for the ride home might be a smart call. Overall, it's not perfect, but it gets the job done. A great resource if you're nearby, though a bit of a trek if you're coming from outside Lewiston.

Unfortunately for us when we arrived there were only large dogs and the play areas are separated by size. I took our dog out to walk her around a bed and was approached by a small child, maybe 7 years old asking to pet my dog. She asked my dog's name and pet her for a few minutes before heading into the large dog enclosure. There were four or five women in the enclosure and maybe maybe 8 large dogs. I assumed the little girl belonged to one of them. After a few more minutes, I decided to walk my small dog over to the exterior of the large dog area. Sometimes people don't mind mixing and matching sizes as long as you check in with them and we didn't bring our dog to the dog park to sit alone in an enclosure. However, when I got close to the large dog enclosure, I could tell that the women were upset with the child that came in to play with their dogs. They were asking where her parents were and telling her that she shouldn't be inside the enclosure if she doesn't like being jumped on and things of that nature. I allowed my dog to sniff around the outside of the enclosure and tried to greet some of the womento ask if it would be okay if I could bring her in. It was clear they were frustrated with the situation with the little girl and the overall mood was just bad so we decided to walk around outside instead. We did see some teenagers come over to the enclosure later and they apparently were the ones responsible for the small child so they were getting in the earful from the ladies inside as we were leaving. While the park didn't exactly work out for us and we didn't feel very welcome or comfortable, it's very possible that was a unique circumstance. The park itself seems to be a good one, especially if you have a large dog and it's definitely worth a stop to see if your pup can have a better time than ours did.

Agility area is in disrepair. Gates are hard to open or don't even close. Littered with broken dog toys. The poop is the fault of dog owners, clearly. I don't understand going to the effort of bringing your dog somewhere and then being that irresponsible. I won't be going back. The trails right there would be more enjoyable.

Also, who doesn't love placards with historical info about the working shipyard and the geology of the waterway? Such a lovely spot!

Wanting to stretch our legs on a spring day, we came here because it was another green space close…read moreby to where we live that we hadn't explored yet (and it had ample parking). Even after doing my research, though, I did not know fully realize that the 40-acre Hinckley Park in South Portland was FOR dogs. Like, it's not just a trail that dogs are allowed on, which is what I assumed. It's a straight up dog park where leashes aren't required, and apparently neither is picking up after your canine friend. So, if you don't mind the occasional poo pile or the incredibly frequent dog interaction (read: being sniffed in awkward places, being jumped on, being growled at, or being rubbed on after a pup has taken a swim in the muddy water) then maybe this spot isn't for you. Which is too bad, because it really does offer very nice, relatively short walking paths - all very level and accessible to all kinds of walking abilities. There's also plenty of bird call, flowers, a tiny waterfall, two ponds fed Kimball Brook that you can apparently fish at, wooden bridges to cross them, etc. And did I mention lots...and lots...and lots...and lots of dogs. So, as a human: I probably will never come here again. But, if I were a dog: YES, PLEASE. Let's go for a double-u aye ell kay here EVERYDAY.

Both canine and human. Now if u and your dog are the out doorsy, fit fanatical types.. This is the place for you. Choices of trails. An amazing pond for the pups to swim in. I hear there is a second pond too. I did not find just a lazy enclosed off leash area (although all trails are off leash) which is why i knocked off a star. Its gorgeous too. If u can walk a 1/4 mile and ur pup can do its a must visit.

We usually come in the late afternoon and there are always friends for him to play with. It is probably a tad smaller than a football field and it right next to the street, but it is grassy in most areas and does have trees. It is completely fenced in and it right next door to a community garden that is managed the members of the community. I think there is a working water pump, but I've always brought my own bottle of water for my dog and my own poop bags but I think there are bags there for people to use. People have always been friendly here. There is a parking lot here and street parking, so that is not an issue.
