The station was busy, not unusual - but they are just unhelpful and unpleasant bordering on rude sadly. Various routes within the station were blocked but there were no helpful redirect signs and when we and a local lady were rudely prevented from going to the bathroom by a security guard - WTF!? Bordeaux Bordeaux! When in Bordeaux, this is one of the ways you'd be coming into town. And depends on where you're staying, it can be a short walk or a long taxi/Uber ride. I've arrived here on a train from Paris. Easy breezy. Took longer to find the right spot to wait for Uber or call Uber from. It's tricky the roads here are. Most are one ways. I like the station. It's gorgeous, stunning and pretty big. They have a few food options inside. If you go outside and cross the street, you'll find a ton of little fast food spots like gyros, French fries etc too. Even some kabobs shop. My Uber ride from here to Bordeaux old town took about an hour!!! Because you can't turn around and the driver didn't know how to go. It's tricky and expensive. And ended up walking for a good 20-25 minutes anyway. To go inside old town is tricky with all the clock towers and cobble stone roads. The driver doesn't speak English and I only know basic French. Definitely ask the driver if they know how to get to where you're going before you get in! It was easier coming back. Apart from that little disaster, Bordeaux is stunning and the old town is magical! You must stay in old town! And definitely take the train if they are running. read more

Gare Saint-Jean Bordeaux was the wife and my departure point to catch the TGV back to Paris. As train stations go, it was quaint but exuded a charm that reminded me of a setting out a spy movie or more likely some French art house film. It was everything good that Gare Montparnasse was not. Given its smaller size, navigating around the place and finding your train was a snap. We took a cab from where we were staying to get to the station; however, it also appeared as if it was served by the city's lightrail system. We had purchased our tickets in advance, so I can't assess the station's ticketing process. Gare Saint-Jean Bordeaux may be the only game in town with regards to rail travel to the rest of France and beyond, but it served its purpose with ease, charm, and without a hint of inconvenience. read more

The train station is currently under construction which makes navigating slightly more difficult than normal. Other than that it is a pretty standard station. The employees here speak minimal English, but are eager to help if you are in need. There are also lots of signs and self service machines available. They have many of the same stores you will find in other larger train stations (ex: Paul, McDonald's, etc). There is also a piano by the main door that several passing travelers graced us with impromptu performances while we waited for our train back to Paris-so that was pretty cool. read more

Have been through Gare St. Jean many times over the years, and I have to agree with the previous reviewers that the place has a lot of charm, inside and out! Most everyone comments on how small the place is, but the average American will be quite taken with the huge train shed that keeps you out of the weather when you're boarding and disembarking. A few pragmatic things to know... * The station is quite a long distance from the Centre Ville, but there is a tram system that will take you right to the Hotel de Ville - requiring a tram change at the main city plaza near the river. In other words, if you're going to dash out for a meal in the city center, or find a cute little hotel on a quiet street, it is going to take a bit of time, and some dragging of luggage on a crowed tram. I think the tram tickets were about 1.35 (euro) per person each way. * There are nice, clean restrooms in the corridor that parallels track one, available to travelers or people who just wander in, but it's .50 to pee! Seems there's always an attendant there to make change. * The area immediately around the train station is a little sketchy. Seems there are budget hotels in the neighborhood, but it's quite a lot different than arriving in Paris Montparnasse or Gare de Lyon - see previous point about the tram. * There are several connections each day to Paris (just over 3 hours) and to CDG airport (just under 4 hours) That's pretty amazing when you really it takes 6 - 8 hours to make that drive, and ends up costing more when you add in the Petrol and road tolls. Unfortunately, there are no TGV lines to Provence, so it's actually faster to ride BACK to Paris then south again. "sigh" Short answer: Great train station. Easy to navigate and a quick walk-out right to the trams. It is under some construction but there are still plenty of places to sit and wait for your train. Decent food options for a smaller city but don't expect anything more than coffee and sandwiches before your departure so pick up food accordingly. read more

Bad experience with all the work around. No signs for car rentals. It took us for ever to find hertz (and hertz was a NIGHTMARE).
