We wasted the first of those precious hours trapped inside the station, my kids and I going stir-crazy in a crowded waiting area while my mom went on a long, difficult quest for a storage locker. I guess there aren't enough lockers to serve the hordes of tourists coming into town for the Christmas markets because my mom had to leave the station and walk another ten minutes to find a place to leave our luggage. Something to keep in mind if you're doing a day trip to Strasbourg. Travel light, or budget time to stash your bags. Otherwise, the station was nice. I didn't appreciate the architecture until we were coming back, but the structure was striking, with a modern glass canopy laid over the historical facade. Trains were easy, and the station was a reasonable walk from the Christmas markets, which I assume were in the center of town. I'd recommend coming in through Strasbourg Station if you're visiting Strasbourg. Just best to give yourself some breathing room when you build your schedule.

As a resort town, Baden Baden is a place where you can easily get spoiled. If you're arriving, you'll find that it's easy to get from your train to the main building. There's a decent sized parking lot, and buses run just next to the train station. If you're departing and get there early, head over to Coffee Fellows for a drink and a snack. The place will be crowded, but if you can grab a seat, you can sip your beverage and take advantage of free WiFi before your train arrives. If you need some last minute snacks, gifts, or books, there's a small bookstore that is surprisingly well stocked with all of the essentials. No matter where your journey takes you, if part of it includes the Baden-Baden train station, it's already off to a great start!

Our train to Paris ran 55 mins late which caused me to realize there is very little seating available on the platform. They offer free WiFi, so that's nice, however it's limited to only 30 mins. Which, again, I probably wouldn't have docked any points for if my train hadn't been running almost an hour late.

We spent about an hour…read morethere before a train ride to Strasbourg, and while I would not recommend arriving that early with small children (we were walking from our hotel and didn't want to get caught in the rain), it was an attractive place to pass some time. The exterior was storybook lovely, with a long red brick facade and a prominent clocktower with a green shingled roof. There were a lot of trees fronting the entrance that were decorated for Christmas. My three-year-old and I took a walk around the promenade out front, and it was pretty scenic. There's nothing to do inside the station but wait, so plan to get in and get out if possible. The walk to or from old town is only about fifteen minutes. It makes sense to take the train to Colmar, and worth admiring the train station while you're there.

Easy to navigate with good signage, lifts, escalator. There is a bus stop outside and a taxi stand. We walked the three blocks to our AirBNB. Colmar has one of the larger Marchés de Noël (aka Christmas markets) complete with a massive Ferris wheel. The entire time I passed by during my stay, things seemed relatively calm. Of course delays couldn't be helped (my friend was affected), but solutions were not too far out of reach. I had been clrver enough to book a room at the adjacent hotel Intercity from which you simply step out at platform 1 straight from the breakfast room. The platform mostly used for some reason. I love to ride trains but I'm definitely not impressed by Deutsche Bahn for many reasons, main one is obviously that the trains are most always delayed (only 1 of the 6 train rides I took during a week was on time). That English information on displays and speakers is not a basic and common thing plus they keep changing the train sets so despite the fact that you should board in front of the train for your booked seat you end up running in vain on a busy platform to reach your seat at the very end of the train are other reasons for my non-fondness of the German railway. Still, Freiburg train station is a pretty decent one as far as train stations go, with cafes and restaurants and a few shops too.

Mind you, it isn't as if they don't have nice railway stations in German, they certainly do, but sadly Saarbrucken really isn't one of them. However, while the station may not be all that great, the trains certainly are, unless you happen to be crossing over into France they you will actually discover that Europe isn't all flashy highspeed rail (though I do remember they did run a high speed train through here to Paris). Mind you, as I mentioned, the trains are fairly frequent, and the station isn't all that bad either, it's just not too fancy.
