Colmar is a beautiful little city with a beautiful little train station. We spent about an hour…read morethere before a train ride to Strasbourg, and while I would not recommend arriving that early with small children (we were walking from our hotel and didn't want to get caught in the rain), it was an attractive place to pass some time. The exterior was storybook lovely, with a long red brick facade and a prominent clocktower with a green shingled roof. There were a lot of trees fronting the entrance that were decorated for Christmas. My three-year-old and I took a walk around the promenade out front, and it was pretty scenic. There's nothing to do inside the station but wait, so plan to get in and get out if possible. The walk to or from old town is only about fifteen minutes. It makes sense to take the train to Colmar, and worth admiring the train station while you're there.

We arrived here by (slow) train from Basel for two days of exploring Colmar. This is definitely not…read morea large station compared to Basel (massive) or Strasbourg (large) but it's bigger than some of the stations we stopped at on the way here. Easy to navigate with good signage, lifts, escalator. There is a bus stop outside and a taxi stand. We walked the three blocks to our AirBNB. Colmar has one of the larger Marchés de Noël (aka Christmas markets) complete with a massive Ferris wheel. There are plenty of other things to see in this lovely town in one of France's many wine regions. [Review 21168 overall - 88 in France - 131 of 2024.]

I booked both hotels on line and even though I inputted Basel, once we were ready to change hotels I found out that our hotel was actually in Lorrach which was in Germany. Hey! What? Fortunately the reviews comforted me since previous cruise goers also stayed in that town and it wasn't too far away and very easy to get to. This station was directly across the street from our hotel. Awesome! The big plus was our hotel gave us transportation vouchers we could use to get back to Basel the next morning. The best and worst of it? The station had an elevator from the station platform to the street level. Always travel light...we never learn. If it had been any other day but Sunday, I would have been an ecstatic camper. Why? Take a walk into the town... keep walking and you see so many charming photo ops. There are LOTS of really nice quality clothing stores and even better SHOE stores with really nice and comfy styles and colors. Only hitch? ALL the stores are closed on Sunday. DANG! The huge and packer ice cream, dessert cafe was open. Who knew people here loved ice cream in all shapes and sizes at 4:30 in the afternoon? The one woman who spoke English told us there was a good Greek Restaurant which would be open at 5 pm. She pointed down the street to the awning. Yes, we had a nice dinner and an even yummier baklava then returned to the hotel in darkness. Thank goodness for this tiny German train station which afforded us safe and easy transportation plus a wonderful window shopping experience

We went to Strasbourg on a Sunday in December, arriving by train from Colmar and departing to Paris…read moreless than six hours later. We wasted the first of those precious hours trapped inside the station, my kids and I going stir-crazy in a crowded waiting area while my mom went on a long, difficult quest for a storage locker. I guess there aren't enough lockers to serve the hordes of tourists coming into town for the Christmas markets because my mom had to leave the station and walk another ten minutes to find a place to leave our luggage. Something to keep in mind if you're doing a day trip to Strasbourg. Travel light, or budget time to stash your bags. Otherwise, the station was nice. I didn't appreciate the architecture until we were coming back, but the structure was striking, with a modern glass canopy laid over the historical facade. Trains were easy, and the station was a reasonable walk from the Christmas markets, which I assume were in the center of town. I'd recommend coming in through Strasbourg Station if you're visiting Strasbourg. Just best to give yourself some breathing room when you build your schedule.
