You really…read moreknow nothing about the medieval city, you don't speak French and you need something that's within walking distance of all the major attractions. I'm no expert on all the lodgings in the area, but Hotel De La Tour De L'horloge will likely suit your needs. It's a small boutique hotel right in the heart of the medieval town of Dinan. The building is old but the decor doesn't fall into the cheesy touristy category, which is nice. The owner serves a quality breakfast and is quick to make recommendations in several languages on things to do/see, details helpful if you're not a native speaker (or even if you are). A few gotchas to know about: -The clock tower, which is a block away, chimes every 15 minutes from 7 am until 10 pm (I think). If you're annoyed by this sort of thing or a light sleeper, don't stay here. -A third of the rooms are on the 4th floor. That's 60 steps with no elevator so you will definitely work off that crepe you had between meals. -The train station is a solid 15 min walk through town. Not really a big deal but something to be aware of if you're lugging a heavy pack. -There is no dedicated parking on site. There is a public lot not far away, but it seemed fairly full and had several restrictions so may not be hassle free.

Make sure you use the restroom ahead of time, as you have to pay for the bathroom inside of the station.

The staff members…read morewe encountered were extremely friendly and helpful, even with our ridiculous American questions. It was so convenient they all spoke English well. They went above and beyond what we could had expected and made our trip to Saint Malo that much better. The hotel is located right across the beach, with amazing sunset views. Fort National is right there, only accessible during low tide. The walled city is a five minute walk, and has so much to offer, especially food. The tourism office is right on the way towards the walled city. Our first day, or night I should say, was the worst possible start of a trip in the history of ever; but this hotel and it's wonderful, cheerful, helpful staff came right in and saved our trip. They made our first night super relaxed and enjoyable, though we'd been through hell. We can't recommend this hotel enough, it was really exactly what we needed to be able to reset ourselves and enjoy our trip after a terrible flight/car rental/arrival/stranded mishap (thanks for nothing Expedia -_-)

The staff was beyond helpful, multi-lingual (including great English), and always seemed friendly and eager to help. We dealt with at least 5 different staff at the front desk, who helped us with everything from trains, car rentals, pizza delivery an tipping etiquette, to various other information. They even offered to make car rental arrangements for us, when our pre-booked rental fell through. If you are an English-speaking traveler, and your French is less than great, stop reading and book here. As for the room, they have a huge shower, with dual shower heads, and a separate room for the toilette. The bed was large, although it was really two pushed together. The mattress could be better, but this was the only real complaint. There is a garage for parking, but was 15€ a night. It is also very tight to maneuver down there. Luckily, we had the smallest car possible. The location of the hotel made for perfect, quick access to the beach for sunrise and sunset photos, right near an old island fort, accessible at low tide only. It is also right next to the main gates of the walled city, where all the food is located, including some late night options. I cannot recommend this place enough. It is more modern than charming, but the helpful staff alone is a huge arrow in your quiver, especially for first-timers in either France or St Malo, and for language challenged Americans.
