The chorizo was amazing- we watched them grill it over an open flame and it arrived cracking and juicy. The cheese was great as well. It was as advertised and great with bread. The crowd seemed very international, but everyone was having a great time with a glass or bottle of wine and some snacks. Would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a drink or snack as they pass through the neighborhood. I do believe it is cash only.

Having experienced fado outside of Portugal I didn't feel strongly that it was a must-do, but when I found myself at night on the street that is known for fado I prioritized it. For the best fado experience I recommend an intimate space, hopefully crowded with people but also with a view to the performers. Tasca do Chico is exactly that place. The doorman told us that space was standing room only, at the (tiny) bar. From there we could see and hear the performers while ordering food and drink. We'd not been there long before we were offered an available seat at a table which caused us to order more food and drink and stay a little longer. The fado here is quite good, made even more enjoyable as the artists change quite frequently; a song or two and a new artist steps forward, all very talented and enjoyable to watch and hear. The fado places tend to have lines out the door and a doorman managing entry. A place across the street looked much bigger but the intimacy is, in my opinion, what makes the experience both unique and special. Even if you have to start at the bar, Tasca do Chico is a great place to experience fado.

They gave us a menu, then came back in a short while to see what we wanted. They generously gave us a few to sample and even brought out a few bottles that were not on the list, and one was a new bottle! Price of wine is not cheap, our glasses each cost €10 each, a pretty steep price in Portugal where a full bottle often cost less. However, considering the expertise and service, the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, this is a lovely place to rest up a bit after visiting the castle.

Never seem to get enough vegetables when traveling but this dish filled my wife's daily quota. This was my first try at this traditional Portuguese sandwich and I liked it. It was served drowning in a sauce but I managed to sop it all up by the end. Our server was excellent all evening and keep us taken care of. My sparkling green wine paired nicely with this dish. Service was impeccable. The entrees were on the pricier side, which is something we didn't realize until the end of the trip - when we've had better food, better experience for a more feasible price. The entrees were smaller and less flavorful than we expected. Our bill was also a big one cause of drinks. An experience that I was hoping to capture was unexpectedly shut down. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, the rooftop was closed to the public. Still an order of cocktails were placed with the attentive server. Shortly thereafter, the tequila based cocktail and a chocolate cocktail were brought to the table. Both drinks were good with two different flavor profiles. The chocolate cocktail with a subtle hint of coffee reminded me of a dessert which could be ideal as a digestif. It also came with a chocolate twig which made the drink a little extra fun. As for the other cocktail, well I'm sure you know how it goes with tequila :) Both drinks cost about $27 USD which was a wee bit more than I anticipated to spend. However, if you could enjoy the views from the rooftop while sipping away a cocktail or two, it will be worth it. Finding this place was also a little tricky. I had to ask the locals to help locate this place. If you're having trouble getting here, be sure to ask the locals.
