My husband and I have each had an ER visit here over the past two months. Each visit afforded us…read morethe opportunity to have attentive, thoughtful, and comprehensive care. My husband came in with a dislocated bone in his. They gave him an X-ray and snapped the bone back into place. They gave him pain meds and a referral for follow up care. Me, I severely slashed my index finger while using a hand blender. I came in with blood running down my hand because I ran out of paper towels in the car. The front desk staff took my information quickly and ensured that I was seen quickly. They cleaned it up, gave me pain medication, and an X-ray to confirm that I didn't break a bone. They also explored the wound to check if there was any nerve damage (there wasn't). Thereafter, I received six stitches. While anesthetizing my finger, I shrieked out in pain and was inconsolable (there are lots of nerve in the finger, making it sensitive.) A nurse came in to hold my hand to console me. My finger was stitched and bandage. They gave me a treatment plan and prescriptions, and medication for the evening until I could get to the pharmacy in the morning. I was given a referral for follow up care. BTW - here in France, it is possible to have a nurse come to the house to remove your stitches. We have since received our bill for services that were rendered to my husband and me. For my husband's injury: radiology (2 different scans) and treatment, cost €126; me: Radiology (1 scan), doctor exam for nerve damage, clean and stitch wound, cost €73.00. We hadn't yet satisfied our deductible so we have to pay out of pocket. The cost of the visits is less than I have had to pay for a co-pay with insurance. I even had a ER visit cost me $1500.00 in the US with coverage and for less medical attention. Not to be political but when looking at what our experience has been here in France, universal healthcare can work and is affordable. Overall, a great experience.
