I had the wonderful opportunity to stay in this beautiful, quaint hotel during a recent business…read moretrip to Herzogenaurach. It's tucked into a quiet residential area just a short walk out of the center of town. Nearby is a school but otherwise the place is surrounded by private homes. My room was on the second floor above the entrance and restaurant on the front of the hotel. The two large windows had a nice view on a green space with tall trees and an old tile-roofed house. Unlike hotels in the US always worried about a lawsuit, these windows even opened wide like doors to let the cool air fill the room at night. The only downside being when people would go out front to talk and smoke in the night. I didn't pay for the room, since it was a company trip, but the price seemed reasonable for what you get. There was a small extra charge for breakfast every morning. The hotel manager was very considerate and accommodating when I let him know my dad would be joining me there for the latter half of my stay. The quality of construction from the building itself all the way to the furniture and fixtures in the room was good. The shower was incredible with a wide, rainfall style head. It could get VERY hot too. There was even a small kitchenette with a fridge, sink and burners for cooking on. But user beware, if you don't clean the dishes they will charge you 150 Euros as an additional fee. The TV also had a full range of channels, including some US news channels in English. The restaurant downstairs had one of the best, widest selections for breakfast I have ever experienced in a hotel. German standards of bread, cheese, deli meats, tomato and cucumber, yogurt and nuts. Plus scrambled eggs, an assortment of cereals, granola bars, packaged pastries, juices, milk, tea and coffee. The manager was always present and attentive and spoke a bit of English too. Parking was a bit tough if you have a big car. Or maybe I'm just not used to driving in Europe. In any case, my car was big by European standards. I had a bit of trouble getting in and out of the parking garage, but I did manage it every day without incident. In the end, if you find yourself looking for a place to stay in Herzo I can highly recommend this hotel.

We had a traditional German spread in the cozy breakfast nook every morning. The service was pleasant. The soap was one of those all in one squeeze bottles in the shower like you find at the gym, so definitely bring your own shampoo. The best parking is next door in the public garage or on the street. The hotel garage is very very small and not really worth maneuvering one's boat-like vehicle into-not that they have many spaces really. Overall, this is my favorite place so far in Amberg for a more Bavarian feel.

I didn't see the inside area of the restaurant, as we ate outside. The beer garden feels a little claustrophobic located between three walls. The lack of much space is understandable right here in the center of town. Nevertheless, there is good atmosphere in the beautiful beer garden. I liked the selection of beer. Brands I had not heard of before. The alcohol free white beer I tried was delicious. The service is not quite ideal. The waiters walk around with 'secret service' style ear pieces which looks funny. The waiter in charge was shouting commands to the other two waiters. Like a little general. Quite annoying. Part of the staff was foreign thus didn't speak the German dialect (I speak good German), which I takes away some of the charm of a Bavarian restaurant, I think. It's like going to a Thai restaurant with German waiters. I must add that one of the waiters was local and amused us very much with his jokes and good mood. Free WIFI (although reception poor in the beer garden). Very clean toilets. Despite small imperfections the food still gives this restaurant a 5 star rating.
