I can tell you it was quite the adventure for three Americans to wonder aimlessly through the streets of Bernkastel to find this restaurant. We were close to turning back, but once we found it, we had the BEST meal of our trip to Germany in the quaint, family run restaurant. The daughter is the waitress and she was very friendly and did her best to explain the menu and make our dinner enjoyable.
We started with a crispy leaf salad and local goat cheese with an olive tapenade which was served in an herbal puff bun. The goat cheese was creamy yet light and paired perfectly with the puff pastry.
I had the roasted chicken breast, served with chanterelle mushrooms pan roasted with hunks of bacon. They also served their specialty potatoes on the side. I absolutely devoured this dish. It was the epitome of perfection from the extremely tender chicken to the meaty mushrooms. If you are lucky enough to be there during chanterelle season, I would suggest any item on the menu which focuses on them. I've never had anything like it outside of Germany and the amount of mushrooms they give you is astounding considering in the states, chanterelles typically go for well over $40 a pound.
My mom ordered fettuccine in a butter sauce, topped with roasted chicken and a large amount of shaved black truffle. This too was amazing and the simplicity of the butter sauce on the pasta worked well with the complex flavors of the truffle.
My father ordered the wild boar sausage with creamy sauerkraut and local mustard potatoes. The boar sausage wasn't overly gamy, but was a nice departure from all the more traditional German sausages we had been eating.
I begged my parents to go back here for the next several nights after our first dinner, it was that good. If I had to pick one restaurant to go to in Germany, this would be it. From the service to the location to the usage of seasonal ingredients, you can't top Graacher Tor. read more
