I went there with my tiny family (wife and son), when we visited our parents. A trip to the white turnip (the donjon is painted white, as it has always(!) been; funny) seemed to be a great idea due to the perfectly nice weather and my junior got hungry when we arrived there, of course. A great opportunity to check out the tavern. As we were told the former innkeeper quit and a couple from the area took over the restaurant - including renovation, update of the menu and lowering of prices. I am so glad I lived long enough to see that happen! The tavern presents itself in unobtrusive colours and is very down-to-earth/rustic; understandable, as this is the former house of the commanding officer of this castle (we participated in the guided tour there, so be aware of spoilers^^). The food was very down-home and is nearly exclusively made of fresh ingredients from the area; I personally can highly recommend the home made ramson-spaetzle! It was delicious and the little one sat in one of the available child seats and ate like a big one. The portions were completely adequate and cheap compared to what you receive - our family wallet was happy. I love that this is a non-smoking restaurant, what to me as a person is totally important. Smokers can smoke outside, if they want to! To get a sample of a few I went with one of their combination platters that included lamb skewer, gyros, meatballs, and waiter suggested the Greek pasta and rice (instead of fries). Great suggestion. Fantastic flavor, fresh spice and seasoning throughout and so worth a return visit when I am back in Grob Umstadt. Also enjoyed the stuffed grape leaves and left satisfied and full. Highly recommend.
