Karl Fazer Cafe is a must visit in Helsinki as it's the first cafe in Finland that Karl Fazer…read moreopened, starting the coffee trend for the country, as Finnish people are known to drink some of the most coffee in the world! And Karl Fazer is famous for being a chocolatier, so Fazer chocolate is a must try, too. Fortunately for me, Karl Fazer Cafe was located right across from my hotel, so I had easy access to chocolate and coffee here. The cafe was very popular, and what's nice is that they are open the entire day, serving meals or something lighter. They also have a chocolate shop on one side of the cafe that you can grab and go. For one of my visits here, I tried the geisha dessert, which is a specialty, along with a Fazer mocha. They were both good, and I was pleasantly surprised that the geisha dessert was a mix of chocolate and hazelnut since the lilac color threw me off, so was afraid it would be a fruity dessert. But it turned out to be better than expected. Another visit, I tried the cinnamon bun, which was solid. It wasn't the best in town, but solid - and definitely better than anything I'd ever get back home. If you're in Helsinki, Karl Fazer is a name you'll hear - and you'll need to try the famous chocolate and pay a visit to the first cafe of the country. It's easily walking distance to many sites as it's in the city center, and has outdoor seating. Glad to have checked out a place of Finnish history.
This is impressive. They didn't skimp on the details on either the exterior or the interior
The coffee was decaf and the cake was berry flavored ... and vanished too quickly
This is one heck of a severe rendition of Art Deco - look at the letters in the name Fazer

"Count the memories, not the calories" is their mantra and I can get behind that 100% based on the quality of the confections they're peddling. The kauppahalli stall is adorably and overflowing with cupcakes, bars, candies, and mueslis, granolas, etc. Standout treat is the peanut butter-banana cupcake. I walk through nearly daily to pick one up. If they're out of the pb&b as I lovingly refer to my favorite food in the world, the carrot cake is also amazing. As is the meringue pie. I have it on good authority that they have American style cheesecake and I will update as soon as I've had it. Oh my god I love sweets and this is the best find ever. Don't tell, but I kind of like them even better than I like Kakku Galleria....eeek! ps - the lady who pushes the goods at the marketplace is awesome! She is funny and chatty and will remember you after just a few visits. You'll feel special. That will make you feel ok about eating tons of sweets. It's ok. You're at the kauppahalli - walk a few laps around the flea market and -bam!- calories burned.

We tried three different things here and I'm sorry that I don't know their names, not even in English. A baked something with a rice center that was quite moist. A "danish" pastry with a blueberry center that was sweet and very delicious. And a baked rye and cinnamon item that was almost savory. Interesting. Very tasty to try the Finnish treats for sure!
