In essence, the only thing they may have excelled at are uncontested matters, maybe a criminal one. Apparently, they only have one lawyer to work on family cases. When I determined that I was the recipient of ineffective counsel or ethical wrong by Mrs. Barclay, I tried working with the attorney directly in the course of the proceedings, and then ultimately addressed these concerns of ineffective counsel to the law firm owner. I expected that there would be a concern given, but there was not. I was advised by the law firm owner (Mrs. Ranney) that she could not help, considering her and her husband's background in family law was limited. Given that I tried to rehabilitate our relationship with clear expectations, I was further denied service by Mrs. Ranney due to my complaints or concerns that were credible enough to be reported to the Virginia Bar. I sought return of my retainer at the least (realizing they must be paid for some effort even if it were unscrupulous) However, this was never answered. Counsel in this matter was critical, due to a wife who absconded with my children over a decade ago and denied custodial or visitation. The issues I faced are not limited to: 1) Last minute discovery and poor communication. Whether about admissibility, facts or case direction and intentions. 2) No use of subpoena duces tecum to corroborate findings. 3) Allowing unsupervised interrogatories by GAL or court appointed staff. 4) Failure to make disclosures of evidence or submit interrogatories. No evidence was reported by judge! 5) Failure to proceed on the wishes of client during trial, threatening to leave the case and ultimately causing a show cause to be vacated. 6) Threatening abandonment numerous times over minor disagreements. 7) Fails to immediately recognize and object to inadmissible evidence. 8) Allows opposition to run all over the case. Rolling over at any concern raised by GAL or opposing party. Hesitant to make any push for justice, or seek recompense. During retainment, it was pitched about the enjoyment of such cases, determination to follow through, and aggressive stance. This could be further from the truth. We were treated as another manila folder in the stack. The only thing we expected were emails detailing what "couldn't be accomplished", and lowering the bar on the "aggressive" representation promised from the outset. When contacting other law firms to represent in the appeal, it was clear they were "known" as having difficulties in family related cases, particularly Mrs. Barclay's counsel. You cannot win a case when all you do is waste time putting out the fires... VSB case been opened based on this representation.

They're on the pricey side yet you sometimes have to pay for what you get. They aren't like tv and movie lawyers that do ALL the work for you. Sometimes you have to do some research to provide to them and that's ok. Remember that although they make you feel as if you're their main client, you aren't, lol. They will focus solely on you while working on your case, just remember they have other clients as well and it's helpful to them if you can provide as much intel as possible. It's a team effort and believe me, you WANT them as part of your team. I truly cannot say enough praises towards them. The entire team, from reception all the way to the top! I'm sure I have gotten on Martha's nerves several times though she's never let me know lol, because when I get stressed I ask a ton of questions and I start to ramble without letting her speak. The looks from the outside looked promising but very soon the honest behavior appeared. Is it my fault? I should have walked away, yes and no. As acting representation it is the Law Firms responsibility to perform 110% Clients should be their number one priority however time and time again "Money" was the focus. I had not received communication from my Attorney for quite sometime but calls and emails were coming in for money collection frequently. Things were submitted, movement went forward, minimal interaction to seem they cared but honestly I did not feel apart of a family. I would never recommend this Law Firm. Honesty and Truth is not here and I would highly recommend taking your case elsewhere. There is too much to write but just know the VA State Bar will be notified of the unethical and misconduct that I suffered one whole year. Improper representation, Improper evidence gathered/presented, evidence withheld, in house employmee repositioning while case was ongoing. Our insurance was slow to pay…read moreone bill, and that bill was turned over to the Gilliam Law Group for collections (with no notice or conversation from OrthoVirginia, but that's in another review). They, in turn, never contacted us about the balance. Our initial contact was a summons to appear in court. Again...not a letter, not a phone call, but a summons. The judge did actually listen when we explained that insurance was still reviewing it, and decided to allow us more time to resolve things with the insurance company. After conferring with the insurance company, we were told it would be paid and all was ok. Fast forward one year. I checked my checking and savings accounts, and saw that both were empty (despite having plenty of money earlier that day). After investigating, I discovered that the Gilliam Law Group had asked for our accounts to be frozen. Again, we were not notified at all. There was no bill, no phone call, no letter...we moved straight to garnishment. We now have had our accounts frozen for nearly a week, and have been told that our accounts will not be made available again for several more days (even though we paid the debt in full several days ago). This, by the way, is the first time this has ever happened to either of us. We are very diligent about paying our bills. I do not know why we received no notice from this organization before they took the extreme measure of freezing our assets, but I find the practice reprehensible. We literally cannot put gas in our car, buy groceries, or pay our bills because this firm couldn't be bothered to send a bill or make a phone call. The only saving grace is that we have friends who are willing to help us. I can only imagine how hard it would be for people who didn't have the ability to pay immediately...they'd be starving with no hope in sight. The prevailing attitude among the people at the firm has been that it's our fault, and that the fact that we went to court was our notice (despite that happening more than a year ago). Legally, I'm sure they are correct. Ethically, I find this disgusting and predatory. I'd be ashamed to work for this organization; I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing that I was responsible for people not being able to even buy groceries because I froze their accounts with no notice. All my wife and I want is to be able to have a fair chance to pay our bills. That's all we ever wanted. Too bad the individuals at this law firm appear to have had a different agenda.
