Amazing staff, affordable prices and great equipment! Usually rental skis, boots, poles, and even ice skates have a terrible look or feel to them but the ones at Gear Up were in good condition and performed great on the mountain! The skates however are standard hockey skates so don't expect too much from those. The man that helped us was super chill and provided us with some pretty great skis. Rented a pair for ice skates, the whole process was super easy and fairly cheap. Came early morning and was done within 10 minutes. Leave a deposit and return the same day or following day in the morning to be charged for only 1 day rental. Return process was quick as well. Showed up they scanned the skates paid and left. Our family wanted to hike in and around the area in April, which meant beautiful vistas along with abundant snow and ice on the trails. This meant renting crampons for our party of four. The first place that we went, Outside Bike & Ski ---- while they did not rent them, Paul sent us over to the nice folks at Gear Up. Cara (hope I am spelling that right!) took her time with each of us, explaining how they worked, showing how to adjust them, and then making sure that each of us newbies had our gear squared away so tht we were ready to go! It was also explained that "down days" would be allowed when we were not hiking with the crampons, so no charge there (yes, Canada is awesome!), which spared us the hassle of having to hustle back to the shop on the days we were not hiking. Much appreciated, Gear Up! So, given the amount of snow and ice on the trails, the crampons were life savers, and allowed my family to spend more time enjoying the great outdoors standing upright, rather than lying flat on our backs on the ice, looking dizzily up the sky as cartoon birds flew in circle chirping over our slipped-and-fallen bodies. oofah. Just to reenforce how necessary the crampons were: on this trip, we returned to Johnston Canyon, which is not hike as much as a walk long a path overhanging the canyon and water. Well, this time there was a lot of ice, making it a wee bit treacherous...people hiking in their sneakers were slipping and some falling. We must have had ten people point to the crampons we were hiking in and say "You've got the right idea there! Wish we had those!!" etc. The highlight for me was watching a guy in sneakers holding a cup off coffee sliding down an incline in the path like he had those shoes with wheels in them, maybe 15 feet total, coming to a perfect stop, with his coffee and dignity intact. Olympic Gold medal winner, fer sure!! Maybe not everybody needs crampons, like that guy, but we sure as heck did! We had a great time hiking Peyto Lake, Lake Minnewanka, and more! This review is for ski rental. The service is great here! But I had equipment problems that cost me skiing time. I rented for 2 days. Day one the boots didn't fit right to my foot not really a Gear Up problem but I didn't ski a full day. They exchanged the boot and it was a good fit. Day 2 the ski pole broke this was a problem because I couldn't ski. I only skied for 1 1/2 hours when the pole broke while pushing to a different lift. The day was over for me! When I returned the rental the staff was great again, refunded me a days rental and that was great! I still missed out on a day of skiing and I mostly unused lift ticket. I would use them again but I would always check the equipment before leaving. . read more

Came here with a group of 7 and they were able to accommodate some us for crampons and others for snowshoes. I don't remember the guys' name but he was super helpful and patient with all of us asking him questions and trying to get us fitted. This place was really close to where we were staying at and they definitely didn't disappoint. The place was spacious and lots of bench seating. We did not use their services in terms of waxing/tuning skis or snowboards but I would imagine they would be top notch about it. I'll have to test them out next time. Overall, I would recommend this place if you are around this area before heading up onto the slopes. read more

Made a reservation online which was super easy & straight forward. We reserved 2 legacy trail bikes, 1 youth 20" bike & one trailer bike. A couple of days prior to our rental, the weather forecast had turned to rain so I called to change our reservation to one day later, which was no problem at all. The location was very close to where we were staying & the shared walkway in front of the store lead directly to the Legacy Trail, so there was no need to worry about getting turned around in a city we weren't 100% familiar with. We picked up our bikes & one of the service reps helped us immediately. He attached the trailer bike onto my husband's bike & adjusted my seat to my comfort. At no additional cost, they gave us helmets & a bike lock to use when we parked our bikes. We had use of the bikes until 6pm. Bike insurance & bear spray are available for use at an additional cost. read more

We rented downhill gear here (skiing (skis, poles, boots, helmets) and we'd definitely come back here again. The equipment we rented was Rossignol. We definitely found it to be high quality, clean and overall well maintained. Even though the ski boots don't come in half-sizes, the Rossignol boots were by far the most comfortable I've rented. A touch snug but overall the best. Add super star customer service to mix and fair prices and, you've got yourself a five-star experience. We paid $35 Canadian dollars per day and opted out of the daily insurance. You can easily walk in or submit your rental online. We walked in and were in and out in about 30 minutes for a group of four adults. Awesome group of folks running Gear Up! read more

My wife and I went for a last minute trip to the Banff area and chanced upon Gear Up for all the equipment rentals we needed for skiing (skis, poles, boots, helmets) & ice hikes (crampons and snow shoes). The guys there were extremely helpful, particularly since we're not experienced and had limited knowledge on what equipment we'd need. They gave us their suggestions & let us take a load of gear out on day 1 of a 4 day trip with the plan that after we finished with it all, we return it and give them a rundown on what we used and for how many days. It was a great deal for us to decide what we needed day to day, and I imagine less hassle for them to have clients coming back every day to get new gear. Understandably, this probably isn't done during high season (due to equipment demand). I felt leaving a review would be the best way to help them out as their customer service, prices, and guidance on day trips in the area was top notch. Rented bikes for Legacy Trail ride to Banff. Very helpful and provided everything one would need (locks, helmets, gel seat) in the daily rental price. Others we called seemed focused on charging a bit extra for these items. Everything was in excellent working order. Made for an easy day. Legacy trail can be accessed from the trail that started right outside their door. No problem with leaving our car on their lot for the day. Legacy trail is great when you ignore the adjacent freeway and focus on the beautiful mountain views. read more

Excellent place to go if you need to rent winter sporting equipment. First we stopped by to get the metal cleat attachments for shoes which we used when doing the Johnston Canyon ice walk. They were a huge lifesaver because we saw so many people during the hike struggle and actually fall because the hike was slippery. They were easy to put on and use. So glad that we got them. We were so happy with our experience there, we went back the next day to rent snowboards. They have quality equipment as well as a very smooth and efficient fitting and check out process. The prices were also very good compared to what we are used to in United States. Everyone that we interacted with at the store was very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend Gear Up - it is far and away the best sport rental shop in the Banff & Canmore areas. We hired 2 bikes from Gear Up to do the Legacy Trail. The advice was plentiful and honest and the customer service was really excellent. The bikes themselves were top quality, as were the helmets supplied with them. The guys at Gear Up really seem to genuinely want you to have a great time enjoying the outdoors. My friend and I rented ski gear for our day at Sunshine. Although I am a mediocre skier now, I know quite a bit about gear from my experiences in the past. Everything was really quality, well maintained and in good condition for even high-level skiers. The service was fast and friendly. If you don't know what you need, they are super knowledgeable and happy to help. At around $35 for the day (with $4 insurance - as long as you being the stuff back, you're fine, regardless of their condition), this gear was a steal! The boots were some of the comfiest I'd ever worn! If you can spare the time, get your gear here and avoid the ski-hill prices! read more

We came here to rent some cleats to do a hike on an icy trail :) Although it was very busy when we came in, the staff were really helpful and took care of us in a timely manner. They also know their stuff - the guy asked us what our plans were to make sure we'd get the right gear. He took one look at my boots and recommended I rent some hiking boots with better ankle support for the hike we planned on doing, and I'm glad I followed his advice! The prices for renting the stuff were good too - the crampons were only $10 each, and the boots were only $10 as well, a very reasonable price to be able to spend the morning hiking somewhere I couldn't have done otherwise! read more

DON'T TRUST THIS COMPANY if you are planning on renting equipment go elsewhere. They'll leave you high and dry. We flew in from Arizona for a winter vacation, I reserved equipment online for the day we were going skiing. I actually checked in to confirm the reservation at the physical location of the store 2 days prior. Then the day we were to rent the equipment came and I showed up within 15 min of them opening at around 7:15 am. The guy there told me they could NOT fill the request and the first thing he mentioned was their 'disclosure' about not being able to service all reservations. So they knew the night prior (they are open until 9 pm) that they wouldn't be able to provide the equipment yet they couldn't even give me a heads up call that night or even in the morning. Left me scrambling trying to get equipment that morning. GO ELSEWHERE so you don't get left in a tough spot the day you need gear. I'll make sure never to trust these guys again and will make sure my family and friends know about them as well. read more

Most of the staff were great, the one star rating is specifically for Neil the manager. I rented a split board for the day, was helped out by all the great staff, but when I took it out within the first 2 hours of just getting used to it and still walking around on the flat the toe strap broke off. This made it fairly difficult when it came to hiking up to Chester Lake and then fairly sketchy riding back down again, I would've taken it back to get fixed but I was in the middle of an AST1 course with no way back. When I rang Neil to ask for a refund for the day, or a store credit he told me "Why should I have to pay you for you breaking our equipment". Here's the thing, I shouldn't have to pay for faulty equipment, it broke through simple normal use. The onus is on you as a business to provide equipment that will last the period that I paid for. Customer service from Neil was awful, everyone else was great. read more
