I bought National Trust memberships for myself and my mom while she's here visiting, and I've found the properties to be lovingly kept by passionate and eager staff. If it's National Trust, it's worth a visit, however small potatoes it might initially appear. This is a place curated and maintained with real love...the lawn outside the old estate house is manicured to perfection, each blade of grass clipped to be nearly supernatural in its even- and neatness. Then when you get into the wall every shrub, tree, flower and leaf seems to have been arranged with a sense of how it will be most pleasing to the eye from every direction. There are several thoughtfully placed benches should you desire a contemplative moment, and every plant is clearly labelled. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and there is a small cafe and gift shop to finish off the visit. What is amazing is that this is so close to the city but it feels like it's deep in the countryside. Definitely well worth a visit if your just trying to take advantage of a sunny day or show off something unique to a visitor of our fine city.

It, just so happened that the mother-in-law was coming to Glasgow for a weekend stay on her way to London. In her determination not just to stay in the West End and visit the boy's favourite pub - Curlers - she did some researching of her own. Alas, the three of us trundled along to Greenbank Garden before heading to mine for a home-cooked dinner. As unusual a situation as this was, being a cultural trip and all, it was extremely pleasant. Despite the time of year, the gardens were well looked after, presented and provided a nice change from Curlers. I also really enjoyed the chance to explore another The National Trust for Scotland adventure, which given my rather indirect degree is something that I have been increasingly open to in recent months.

Not having a garden myself, I spent half an hour resting my weary legs on one of the park benches with my coffee to go. This spot made a nice change from my usual thinking spot in Kelvingrove park. The community aspect of the garden brings Glasgow University students and locals together in growing herbs, veg and flowers. This garden holds a place in the heart of any Glaswegian who was born in the old maternity hospital…read morethat used to occupy the site. Some of the foundations of the old buildings are still visible in the gardens, as are the front and side porticoes. The hospital was a jumble of interconnected old buildings that had been bodged together over the years, but by 2001 they had fallen into disrepair and the maternity unit moved into a custom extension to the Royal Infirmary. The site was sold to Strathclyde University who demolished the old buildings, but lacking enough funds to build on it instead created the gardens, which opened in 2004. George Wylie's sculpture of the stainless steel nappy pin 'Monument to Maternity' forms the centrepiece of the gardens. Rottenrow is generally held to be the city's oldest street, and the name derives from 'Rath-an-Righ' - 'Street of the Kings' or 'King's Road'. It was originally a ceremonial thoroughfare leading from Cowcaddens to the sacred hill of Dun Chattan that is now the Necropolis, and later became a route used by the Romans coming into the town from the east via the Drygait (so called as it was the only route to have a bridge over the Molendinar burn instead of a ford), which connected to Rottenrow. In early medieval times, Rottenrow contained several manses and lodging houses for the well-to-do attending at Glasgow Cathedral or the University in the High Street. Thomas de Quincy, David Livingston and Thomas Chalmers are among the famous people believed to have stayed there. But by the mid-19th century many of these houses had fallen into disrepair, although some survived into the mid-20th century. The maternity hospital opened in 1860. Now the gardens provide a great addition to Glasgow's many green spaces and are a welcome oasis in the heart of the city. Whether you're looking for a grassy area for a picnic on a sunny day, or a more secluded bench for some peace and quiet, it's worth taking a breather in here. But be warned - the site is very steep and you'll need a breather if you climb the stairs all the way to the top!

It was tranquil when I visited on Friday, though I'm sure it's busy when it's term-time at the University and would make a great spot to sit and eat a packed or takeaway lunch on one of the benches or on the wide steps at the back corner. As the site is on a steep(ish) hill, the gardens are built into terraced levels linked by paths. It's a lovely green space with flashes of purple and yellow flowers. Architectural features from the former Victorian hospital building remain, contrasting with the contemporary feel of the gardens, providing visual interest, and making the gardens feel a bit like a ruin that nature has reclaimed. There's also a piece of modern public art in the form of a giant steel sculpture of a nappy pin with a little bird perched on top, by Scottish artist George Wyllie, commemorating the site's past.

From Greenock Cruise Terminal you only have to take 2 trains: Greenock to Glasgow Central, then transfer to train that goes to Pollokshaws West. Costs about 10 pounds (taxi costs 60). There is a nice, free museum there. Restrooms and cafe are very modern and super clean. There is a tram that takes you around the park, and even stops at the train station. Kids loved this park. Very open and not busy.

We climbed up hundreds of steps to reach a hilltop area with spectacular views across the top of the forest. There's a special people carrier which offers rides for those with mobility needs, and many of the paths are wheelchair-friendly. They have exhibitions, talks and arranged walks to learn more about the gardens too. Definitely worth a visit!

I really enjoyed a trip to this park and it's well worth a visit. The entrance, through the…read moreimpressive gates, is on Regent Street and you can park on that road for no charge. The white war memorial is very striking and the first thing you see as you go through the gates. The old well which gave the park its name, was placed there by by the local laird John Shaw. There is a faded inscription, '1629', with his initials and those of his wife (Helen Housten). It was the original well for the residence of the Shaw family who were very influential on the development of the town; their mansion house was at the bottom of Lynedoch Street but demolished in 1886 owing to railway tunnelling. The Victoria Tower can easily be seen from the park, part of the impressive Town Hall (which was built in 1886 at a cost of over £100,000) and which must surely be one of the finest municipal buildings in Scotland. There are plenty of places to sit, and there are fine views over the town and beyond to the Clyde and the mountains of Argyll in the distance. There's a small children's play area too and some attractive flower beds and mature trees.

Well this we gem of an area is ideal for a sprawl in the midday Glasgow summer. Located in the middle of what once was Garnet Hill Village, this nicely landscaped wee patch of green is pretty damn cool. Opened in the early 90's this has been the summer haunt for office workers, families, art students and wino's alike. With a cool waterfall feature running its Length, a two tired layout and a plenty of areas to plonk your arse down and people watch, this is a welcome oasis for all whose feet no longer which to feel the un forgiving feel of concrete beneath there feet...if only for a few minutes. Ok, like most parks its the kind of place that you give the well known body swerve after night fall and you'll even have to do the old "i'm reading please don't bother me" manoeuvre once in a while to avoid the occasional bam, but hey, that's part of living in Glasgow. So yeah, its pretty cool. Plus there's a wee paper shop round the corner so you can get your ice cream fix too while relaxing with a book, magazine, leaflet, pamphlet, crisp bag, bus ticket or anything else that has writing on it.

I've worked in Cowcaddens for way more years than I care to mention, but have never visited here…read morebefore. It's a really small split level park - but is a total oasis of quiet and calm in the middle of the city. The ideal place to go and have lunch and de-stress :) And it has a wee tower for you to get a better view of the city.
