When our daughter wanted to learn to play piano I answered an ad for a baby grand piano for sale. The piano was being sold by John Geist, who had lovingly restored it. It sounded fantastic. When I asked if there was a guarantee that came with the instrument he looked puzzled and said "You get me with this piano." And so it was. More than a dozen years later, John still comes twice a year to tune our piano. We have gotten to know one another over the years and I look forward to his visits. John is a classical composer and his knowledge and love of music are both interesting to talk with him about and inform his approach to the sound of the instrument. He is professional, exacting and thorough. He clearly loves his work, and the piano always sounds fantastic when he is done. I did not find John to be professional. I always try to use locally-owned businesses to put funds back in the community but was very disappointed to receive a last minute cancellation from him before a very important event because he couldn't figure out to complete a simple form for payment, this was after I offered him immediate payment with a credit card even before completing the work - he does not except credit card payments. I received a very long unprofessional message along with his last minute cancellation. read more

One week before my Christmas party, another piano tuner no-showed. John was a godsend. He came on a Sunday and had my piano tuned in 90 minutes. One string was broken when he tune my piano, he explained to me this is happening even to a new piano, and suggest me calling my piano company to fix it. I understand this may happen, to save some money for him I did it, the company replaced the string for me but that key sound really bad after been placed. I think this should be included in the first tuning of him because he didn't tune this key since it was broken. But after I contacted he to tune only that key, he want to charge me again for this. I think this is not that reasonable. But I am happy he came to help me to tune that key later. read more

John brought our piano back from the dead. It had not been tuned in 15 or so years, and the damper pedal had broken. We asked him to come tune our instrument at the beginning of the pandemic. He was very respectful and came wearing a mask and gloves and arranged payment with us over the phone so we could all maintain a safe distance. Bought a used piano recently and worked with John, first, to inspect the instrument before purchasing and after purchasing he made some repairs and tuned an instrument that hadn't been touched for some years.
