Wow! The rude women (sadly) who work in the Deli area and Bakery have made going to Gelson's feel like I'm in some bad Mean Girls movie. First is being ignored by 3 different female employees when I was the ONLY customer in front of them. Then being told to go to the Bakery section for what I wanted. I went to the bakery section and found what I was looking for on my own. When I put the bread down in the Bakery section that I found in the Deli section a 4th employee said, "that's not our bread!" I'm not exactly sure what she wanted me to do with that information, but I moved on to another section of the store at that point. Then when I got to the cash register, and was the next customer, the cashier completely ignored me, and almost ran into the arms of the customer behind me, greeting him with a huge smile and a warm Hello. She was so happy to see him, but completely ignored the fact that I was actually her current customer. Least friendly place I have ever been. I deleted my Gelson's app and won't ever be coming back. UPDATE: drove from there to Ralph's to find nice red ripe organic strawberries - they are the exact same brand as Gelson's has, but Gelson's organic strawberries were almost white/green. This is the only market where I buy fresh fish. It also has many items that can not be found at other stores. I especially like the friendly, helpful workers at Gelsons who don't act like it is a chore to help a customer find a product. There are Gelson's shoppers and then there are not Gelson's shoppers. I'm the latter of the two. I think they misjudged their audience. The lot is often empty. Their food bar is OK. Their prices are off base (see pic). Whole Foods would have been a much better fit and competitor to Vons. But, I do love their Fruit of July cake! read more

This Gelson's offers good quality meats and seafood compared to other supermarkets. The price may be a little higher but the cuts are better and they are packed very neatly. So far, I have tried their lamb, prime grade beef, chicken, and salmon. Each were fresh and good quality. The Jidori chicken wings are priced very cheaply especially for the quality and at the counter you can choose between flats or drums. Their lamb chops are also very good quality and my favorite part is that they are not Frenched. Altogether they have a good selection of items here. read more

Very impressive setup. Different from the Westlake Village location, this store reminds me much like a cross between the setup at Sprouts Camarillo and Whole Foods Oxnard. This store comes complete with a fruit and Juice Bar, the traditional Viktor Benes Bakery, I prepared meals section, food bar, olive bar, Cheese Bar Etc. With aisles clearly marked which makes it easy to find things. Special sections labeled gluten free on a sign that protrudes from the shelf and on the Shelf itself. This store exceeded my expectations greatly. Note my only two issues were they seem to be very expensive in some aspects And while they do have bulk bins which is a nice addition to this store, it is hard to figure out which numbers to write down for your products because there are two different numbers on each bin. The standard of most stores is the numbers that you write down or on the bottom corners at this store however the numbers are up at the top. It was very confusing and when I got to the register the staff member could not even find the code for the item I got, or that I wrote down. read more

I eagerly awaited the opening of this store, since I've shopped Gelson's at their other locations for years. I was not disappointed. The store was spotless and well organized and it's employees very friendly and helpful. Gelson's has a reputation of being very pricey, and while this is so in some instances other items are priced very fairly. Also, the quality of its produce and deli department are consistently excellent. There are some items I can only find here (chicken livers, English pea pods, corn rye bread, chicken fat). I shop at Trader Joe's and surrounding markets as well, but Gelsons is where I go when I want something special. ( Oh, and did I mention the incredible Victor Benes bakery? I walked in today, February 17th, at 3:15p and went to the produce department. There, two people were letting their large furry dogs (with no service tags) smell and lick the produce. I notified a store employee, and he said their store is lax on that. I went to the manager at the front desk, right in front of the people and dogs checking out. I asked him the store policy, and looking down, he said only marked service dogs were allowed. I asked him to look up in front of him, but he didn't and just walked away. Worst experience for any market in the areas I shop in, much less Gelson's which tries to make you think they are a high-end, clean and safe store. Horrid, ain't going back there soon. read more

First of all Gelson's is my all time FAVORITE Grocery Store. Living now on the east coast I can safely say that there is nothing that compares to the service, quality and Variety. Most stores here are chock a block with any type of JUNK FOOD you can imagine. Being 'an outside aisle' shopper I can assure you that the produce is sorely missed. I recently told the store manager where I now HAVE to shop that one never hears the word NO at Gelsons. I dream of the salad bar and last month I was THRILLED to see the expansion. I have been going to gelsons ever since it opened. At first i was a little skeptical thinking that it would be overpriced. Some things here are more expensive, like the hot lunches but you definitely get what you pay for. I've been super impressed with the fruit and vegetable section . Also, the checkers are so nice here, managers are also nice and helpful. I'm just super impressed with their customer service. There's never a line here, ever! I always love the sandwiches from the deli department. Lines are always short and the food is always super fresh. I also got my Thanksgiving dinner from the deli and it worked out great! I'm so glad they have opened here and I don't have to go to Westlake! The personnel is always glad to help you, I even changed my pharmacy to here as I can't stand VONS anymore. If there are too many people in line they always open up and help the line moving. If I ask them to cut a meat package for me they are happy to do it without any problems. I have not bought meat from any other stores except Gelson's for the past 4 years. Their chicken taste good and so does the meat. It's worth every penny. If you call they help you right away. Very pretty store. They did a great job on the appeal of the store. Sushi section not good at all comparing it to other Gelson's. The sushi employees are either always gone or on break. The sushi does not taste fresh. I asked them to make me a fresh roll and the sushi guy just pulled it from his refrigerator already made. Any sushi chef would know that a fried shrimp roll needs to be made and served or it will be soggy. For $10 or $11 a roll I expected a good roll. I have tried it several times to make sure it is not an isolated incident but it's not. Won't go back there for sushi. I literally dumped the sushi I bought today away because it was so bad. The salad bar could be better. It is very bland and does not have much to it like whole foods. We like to go places where we can just pick up dinner but unfortunately this won't be the place for us. For $30-$35 we can't get anything to fill us up. The portions are way too small for anyone. I hate to have to drive all the way to whole foods but looks like I will have to go there or Trader Joe's. I really expected more for what they charge. I never see many people in the store so I'm not sure they will be able to make it unless they start changing things around soon. They are new so they still have a chance. Hopefully they will listen to their audience and see what we want. read more

I am disappointed by this location. I was hoping it would be a great alternative to Whole Foods but sadly it is not. The staff here is incredibly kind but super slow. It took 45 minutes to get hot food and pastries. The guy behind the counter looked confused and had to ask other team members for help. He could not find containers, some items were still in the back, etc. The bakery was understaffed and it took another 15 minutes just to be serviced. For the price, it's not worth the wait. Worst of all, the food was not up to par, it was bland and dried out. I'll just drive to WH, spend about the same, and get better quality hot food and service. I had high hopes for this place but it is mediocre at best. read more

This is our very favorite Gelson's! Everyone is exceptionally friendly and the prepared foods are delicious. We love the bakery ladies, every one of them! Bill works in the deli and is personable, kind, pays attention to your order, and remembers everyone's names! He treats us and everyone he meets like family. Saul is another wonderful man who works in the deli. He's always smiling and offers help readily. Victor is another winner in our book, I think somethings in the air at Gelson's on Avenida! I was thrilled with Gelsons since they opened, however their prices have always been a serious issue for me. Quite a few of the staff are wonderful, and I especially have enjoyed the folks in the fresh fish department...they are this location's true gems, always a good laugh with them that brightens up my day. HOWEVER, the pharmacy is quite another story, and for this, I will not return to this location. Due to a heart incident last June, I'm to be taking daily medications, which sadly, I'm always trying to be more consistent with. One particular prescription had 3 refills, with an expiration date of 7-19. When I went in last evening asking for a refill, the pharmacy manager told me that since I have taken the medication routinely, she wouldn't refill the prescription and would call my doctor to be sure I was to have it. Excuse me? The MD prescribed it for me daily AND ordered 3 refills! This was after this same rude woman yelled across the pharmacy for me to sit down when I was speaking with the pharmacy tech requesting my once monthly medication be put in an envelope with label since I take it at the counter and didn't want to keep adding plastic container garbage to the environment unnecessarily. Today I called another local pharmacy to ask if they knew of this practice of a pharmacist refusing to refill a medication that had 3 refills still current. They said they would happily transfer my remaining prescriptions to them, problem solved. There is just no reason to shop Gelson's to pay extra money for rudeness and unprofessionalism. read more

I am very pleased when I always shop at Gelson's. Everything looks very nicely presented to customers. There deli salads for so good; I highly recommend trying the spicy pad Thai salad; it has some refreshing Asian note with a little earthy crunch. The produce and meat is the best I have seen in some time I highly recommend that. The only 1 thing they lack on is beverage options (I'm sorry ). I was always intimidated by the boutique stores selling high price products but I'm utterly surprised by the service and quality of the deli section. It has become more of a fun experience to go grocery shopping here because of the pleasant people and atmosphere. Waited good 15 minutes for the deli guy to hand me sliced turkey as he took his sweet time and kept stopping to chat with coworkers then disappeared altogether! I should have just walked away but was curious to see just how long it would take him to get me half a pound of sliced turkey. Turned out - ridiculously long. I am a regular customer of this store. I attempted to buy (5) chicken breasts for my family of five, and was restricted to (4) chicken breasts at the counter. Nothing was posted to say you can't buy enough to feed your family. Was rather embarassed at the check out as I was being made out to be a panic hoarder. LOL. Just trying to buy dinner for my family. Maybe it was the way I was dressed? I have been working from home. Manager was extremely rude when informing me she had a family of six to feed, and I should be thankful to get what I am getting. I am sure she gets all the meat she wants from Gelsons. Needless to say, I get the current times, but I will never shop in that store again! read more
