Breakfast Special today at General Merchant
    Philip W.

Went to General Merchants this morning for Brunch. It is much improved from it's opening in the Summer which can only be expressed as chaos and not in a good way. I had a dish from their 'Specials' it would hard to describe. Except to say that it was amongst the nicest breakfasts that i have ever tasted. For good measure we were seated next to Ulster coach Less Kiss so I was treated to a little insider info on today's game **First class**

Salmon Teriyaki with broccoli & diced sweet potato

Tried this place for the first time a few days ago and was very impressed. I had the salmon teriyaki with broccoli & diced sweet potato cubes, full of flavour. Then treated myself to one of the raspberry & white chocolate mini cakes - sooo good! Washed this down with a Flat White coffee. Will definitely be back:)

    Choripan with salted chili fries

A friend recommended this cafe so I decided to give it a go one weekday evening. The cafe is situated on the Upper Newtownards Rd close to Stormont. It's modern with an Australian influence. The evening menu had about 6 options but each one was really different and there should be something to suit everyone. I ordered the choripan, which was a chorizo hot dog served with salted chili skinny fries. The food was perfectly cooked and very well presented. For dessert there was a banoffee waffle or you could choose from their mini cakes and pastries displayed at the counter. On viewing these I couldn't resist the white chocolate and raspberry cake. The cake was flavoursome with speckles of dried raspberry throughout and topped with a raspberry and white chocolate buttercream & white chocolate decoration. The only thing that I could fault the place for was that when we were seated we were not informed of any of the evening specials and only realised there were some when another group arrived and sat beside us and I overhead a different server list the specials off to them. This was after we had already ordered and was disappointing as some of the specials sounded great. Unfortunately the seat we were sat in did not have a view of the specials menu on the wall so it might be better if they provided a printed menu or ensure anyone at this table is informed of them by the staff. Prices are reasonable and you can also BYO.

    Sloppy Joe!

Went to General Merchants today for the first time. . We came as a party of 6 and we got seated pretty quickly, which I was surprised about, as it was packed!! I really loved the old fashioned decor and design. They have a small but fantastic looking menu, after some deliberation, I decided to go for the Sloppy Joe. One point to note at this stage is that one of our party is vegetarian and she found choices quite limited. In the end, they amended one of the salads for her. Food arrived quickly and my meal was fantastic, it didn't look big but I was stuffed! I also got a slice of carrot cake to go, and it too was beautiful. One small complaint I had was the fact that the server started teaching over people to clear away the plates of some of us who had finished, while others were still eating their food, and this made them feel rushed. All in a good experience and I would definitely go back!

SD Bells is all about the tea and coffee. In these days of tall skinny macchiatos and grande…read moreamericanos, a non coffee drinker like me (yes really, I have NEVER drunk a cup of coffee) is deeeelighted to find somewhere that has a huge range of teas. The interior is pretty traditional and comfy and I always see a complete mix of school kids, mums and tots and the more mature in Bells. I usually call in for 'elevenses' and sometimes even wait till eleven o'clock! Depending on what I've been up to the night before, I'll have either a cold diet coke or a nice civilised cup of Earl Grey if I have been a good girl. Either way, I'll also have a rather delish tray bake to get the blood sugar nice and high. I have also had lunch a couple of times and the sandwiches are fresh fresh fresh and remind me of the kind of sarnies my mum would make! Next door to the coffee shop is the really interesting part - the little shop where you can buy Bells tea and coffee to take home. The range is mind boggling and I can recommend the Oolong peaches and cream blend. Oh yes, there really is a peaches and cream tea and I love it. Being a freak of nature non coffee drinker I can't personally vouch for the beans, but everyone else tells me they're top notch! Give me a cup of tea every time (and a diet coke chaser for a caffeine hit). The original Mr Bell started the business in 1887 which explains why these guys really know their leaves and beans!

I was here last week for a nice little family day, everyone had coffee and the like. But I wired…read moreinto a little panini and it was lush!!! It did take them an age to serve it to me tho. Everyone had finished their coffee by the time that I had been given my food. But on this occasion I didn't mind because everyone was watching me eat it and I could tell they where so jealous and very upset that they didn't order something as-well. I was sitting beside my uncle who likes to eat (if you know what I mean) and he didn't talk to me the whole time, he was mesmerized by the succulent cheesy chicken I was devouring. Seriously it was like he had never seen food before!!!! I loved it and will definitely be back for some more family torture sometime, but it is a bit out of the way for me as it sits in solitude away from any kind of hustle and bustle which isn't traffic jams on the Newtownards road/Knock dual carriage-way junction.
