We were here during Thanksgiving weekend for the Syracuse football game. The place was under construction. Rooms are newish but small. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Very close to Syracuse University. They also hooked us up with a bottle of wine. Beds were comfy and the main lobby, even though a mess, was nice to sit around and watch other football games. I'd probably come back here as the cost wasn't to bad and there are quite a bit of things around here. The downside is that the city seemed to close early but that could have been because it was Thanksgiving weekend. read more

Unfortunately the worst hotel I've stayed at on the hill as of yet and would not recommend. Visited in mid-September for homecoming and got put in a room literally as far as possible from the lobby. Syracuse is definitely not known for being hot or humid (the temp was around 70 high / 55 low) but the room and even hallway leading up were hot / humid / muggy / and musty. Cranked the AC all night and even though the temp went down the dampness and smell stayed. Felt like I was back in undergrad in some frat's basement - not a place you want to sleep. Mold in the bathroom rounds it out and I can only guess there's more that can't be seen in the room itself. Hotel seems to be in the process of being bought / transitioned to new ownership and can only hope that some major upgrades are being planned. read more

So my wife and I found out about this restaurant thanks to Groupon. We were able to get a great deal and since we love trying new places, it was a no brainer! I am actually quite surprised there are so few reviews on here, but its good to see a shared sentiment of it being absolutely delicious! The restaurant itself is located within the hotel, but its not a hotel restaurant...if you know what I mean. As soon as you walk in and make your way over to the restaurant, you will find your self extremely pleased by both the décor and the mood. The lighting is set perfectly so that you can eat your dinner, while being soft enough to make this a great location for a romantic date. They don't have a huge menu, but what is on here is great. My wife had a delicious Strip Steak and I had the Fish N Chips. Now normally, I am a burger kind of guy, but my wife urged me to try something different. I'm glad I did, as the fish itself was really tasty and the breading was just the right consistency. My only issue with my meal is that the tartar has a strong dill flavor. I hate dill, but I can't knock them for that because that is just personal taste. Some people love dill after all. My wife's steak was flavored and seasoned perfectly and her veggies were great too. This is a more fine dining experience so with that being said...the prices are a little higher than other restaurants. The food and the service is well worth it though. read more

The best thing about this hotel is it's beds. Between the soft pillows and the mattress, it's been a long time since I have slept so well. The location of this hotel is very good if you're attending a Syracuse University event. The guest rooms are well appointed. I loved the furniture in my room, but I sorely missed a refrigerator and a microwave. The food from the hotel restaurant, 1060, is good; Room service is also very accommodating. The jury is still out on whether I would choose this hotel again in the future or perhaps try another. read more

Do NOT stay here. Dirty and falling apart. Understaffed. One 1 person at front desk and a handful of female cleaners. Wish I'd read older reviews before booking because some of the problems we have were noted by other guests YEARS ago ... and hotel obviously has no interest in fixing. I'd give zero stars if that was an option. See pics attached... Dirty phone with no dial tone - so can't call front desk or housekeeping. Dirty uncovered duvet, Furniture falling apart, Crumbs on desk, Towels for two in 4 person room. Had to ask front desk for extra pillows and blankets 3 times because every time we asked for supplies, the wrong supplies were delivered. We purposefully went out to eat and did not eat in restaurant because we were so disgusted by conditions of room we didn't trust the kitchen would be clean. Oh and ... it's MOVE IN week for freshman at Syracuse University. If you can't put your best put forward for THAT week, can you imagine what the rest of the year is like?! Unbelievably the worst possible experience we could have had for Syracuse Family Weekend 2019. Declines our reservation--oversold--we were told, after booking in August. I logged into my Hotel Tonight app and there was a room at half the price I was initially guaranteed. Front desk attendant exasperated and refused to let me talk to the manager, as the restaurant was opening that night! The dumpster fire goes on and on...a wedding is hosted and we can't go to the bar because of a private event. Someone, please shut this place down. read more

It's my second visit and quality wise it's been consistent. It's a beautiful old hotel that has most of the modern amenities. Check-in was quick and the front desk staff were friendly. I was assigned a room in the building across the entrance driveway from check-in. So in winter it can be cold crossing to the other building. My room was generally clean with only a few oddities. One being the sink countertop had some serious cracks in it with a bad patch. The other just being some technology issues that could stand to be updated. Here in the home to Carrier heating and cooling, I first walked into a room that was at 79F degrees. Ouch, it took a while to cool down. The bathroom was spacious. They even had one of those Kenny Rogers Roasters red heat lamps for when you step out of the shower. The hotel gives you Aveda toiletries which is a really nice touch for a more independent hotel chain. The Kleenex/tissue in the bathroom was placed on top of the toilet. Personally, I'm disgusted by that, thinking that any splash could easily end up on the tissue. The bed was comfortable, but my comforter lacked a duvet cover or top sheet. The decorative sheets and pillows were a bit over the top. I had this giant pile of decorative sheets stacked in the corner that was more of a hassle to take off the bed than anything else. It'd be one thing if they offered evening turn down service and took care of the decorative bed linens, but that doesn't seem to be a service offered at this hotel. They had a very nice widescreen TV, but most of the cable channels were standard definition. It's kind of a waste for having an HDTV in the room. The room lacked a printed channel guide, so I only found over-the-air local channels in HD. Travelers have come to expect some basic TV channels in HD like ESPN and HBO. They offered hotel WiFi service, but my built-in air card was faster. Best speeds I could achieve out of the hotel's internet were .25Mbps down and .08Mbps up. Not impressive. read more

My family and I were very unsatisfied with our 3 day stay here. Unable to access the lobby from inside the hotel for most of the stay. I had to put my coat on to get out and over to the front desk, which was a folding table. Was never about to get a menu for the restaurant and no current menu was available in the room or online. Hallways smelled like weed. Rooms felt warm and musty like a previous reviewer said. We were switched to another room, which had food, beverages, toiletries left from previous guest(s). Though the staff at least changed over the linens... with half cleaned ones. The hotel gym is the reason this review was able to get a single star. New varied machines & free weights, filtered water, fresh Towels. Got the gym to myself each time, though it's likely because it was poorly labeled and in a separate building. Also, news was on the tv each time I came to workout. Who gets pumped up watching news?? Yuck. Not really sure what I expected for my first trip to Syracuse, but the Genesee Grande is definitely not doing the town any favors. read more

Way overpriced for what you get. When we checked in we were charged an extra $50 "for incidentals" though they did remove it when we checked out. Hopefully the renovations will improve the place. We ended up in a room next to an industrial A/C unit that we could hear all night. read more

Above and beyond accommodating. I can't tell you how wonderful this place, and the staff were. I was in town because my father was getting surgery at the University Medical Center. With such a crazy and demanding schedule, this was the perfect distance to the Hospital, and were able to provide great food and drink after other restaurants in the area had closed for the evening. Then, the next morning, several hours after check out time, we were notified that my father could check out of the hospital early, and the staff were so accommodating that, without even a second thought, they wouldn't charge us for an additional night, and on the flip side, gave us a discount now knowing that we were there for a surgery. The rooms were fine, the beds comfy, but really, the staff and service were beyond the call of duty, and can't be commended enough! The food service, the drinks, and the accommodation- I will forever owe this place a debt of gratitude for what they did. This experience was the epitome of what customer service can be at its apex. read more

I am a cheap bastard when it comes to hotels so of course I Pricelined it! Lucked out with a final cost of around $70 for one night midweek. I wanted a king sized bed so the clerk upgraded me to a junior suite on the 6th floor of the Mayflower building- seems there are two buildings here so beware when reading the conflicting reviews. My junior suite (room 610) was a well-appointed 400 sq feet. The main bedroom was around 13x20, the study alcove was approx. 8x10. The bathroom was around 8x10. The driveway bisects the main building (e.g. reception, restaurant, Koi pond) from the Mayflower building where my room was located. The one elevator was kind of slow for such a large building. Their free parking is located further down the driveway between the two buildings. Happy Travels! read more

The hotel looks pretty from the outside but the rooms are outdated. The bathroom is the biggest issue. First problem was that the previous guest / housekeeping left a toilet clogged with a turd and toilet paper and we had to call the front desk to get it plunged. How did housekeeping leave it this way and clear the room for the next guest?And while we are on the toilet, let me say they are so small they seem to have been designed for toddler use only. Next came the shower. Turn on the water and the handle fell apart in our hands. Tried to screw it back in but it is stripped. Obviously not the first time it has happened. I was very excited to stay here and unfortunately I was very disappointed. When you walk in, the lobby seems fancy and the staff are friendly. As you head down the hallway to the Elevator you begin to realize how dated the hotel is. Once in the room, it smells musty and feels damp! However, our bathroom was updated which was nice. I wish they would update the beds which were quite uncomfortable in my opinion. I was in town for two nights and booked the hotel because it was the most reasonable rate at $135/night. Had I known it was like this, I would have stayed at a M or H property for $200/night. Unfortunately, as nice as the staff are and the ideal location for my stay in Syracuse, I cannot recommend this hotel. I wish it had been a better experience. read more

This is a pretty nice hotel. Rooms are very classic and well furnished. I really like the bathrooms. The restaurant/bar is pretty nice as well, with good food and beer selection. Negatives: Workout area is a bit dated. Would like newer stationary bikes. And a foam roller and some space to do some core work. Wifi service is very weak. They have an AWESOME breakfast menu! Their hotel is super fancy, but their menu is simple and straight forward, which is nice to see because most nice hotels try to jazz up their menus to make them look high end So many options, hand held sandwiches, local ingredients, frittatas, omelettes, pancakes, french toast, nutella stuffed bread, fresh fruit, great presentation on the food the only mishap was that there were grinds in my coffee, but the waiter apologized profusely, replaced it and gave us all free coffee I requested for an egg scramble instead of an omelette and they did not disappoint...everything was top notch including their service... our waiter was very attentive and quick, he gave us 5 star service I will definitely go back next time im in syracuse read more

Had a comfortable stay while driving across country with my dog. It's great to have dog friendly options for travelers. Erin at the front desk was very helpful. Check in and out was a breeze. The room was clean and huge! Modern television, and Kohler fixtures. Now that's luxury. Best of all, it was very quiet. There was a nearly full parking lot, so I know there were a lot of guests. I never heard anyone else. Definitely a heavy duty building. And my dog was comfortable the whole time. Sometimes they get agitated in new settings, so I was pleased that she had a good night sleep too. Chipotle and Starbucks 2 blocks away, for traveling comfort food before you hit the road again. read more

Unfortunately this beautiful hotel was under renovations and under staffed. Our group of nine was in town for a three-day conference with other professionals from around the US. We checked in at 4:30 pm, but no rooms were ready because the early check ins got those. The gym was not available which after long days holed up in meetings was truly unfortunate. The shuttle is offered as a service but was not available to pick us up in the pouring rain because no driver was available. And lastly, dirty comforters, broken ac, and questionable debris made our visit less pleasant than we had hoped. read more

Snagged this hotel last minute as we were coming to see someone at Upstate medical. The carpet in the rooms were wet and musty, the bed was pushed away from the wall, there was dead flies on the window and mold in the bathroom. We requested to be moved and luckily did get moved into a slightly nicer room. The in room fridge was dirty however and there was dust on all the furniture and no shampoo. The staff tired to be accommodating by bringing another fridge which was nice of them. But for the price, this hotels is absolutely not worth it. It is much too dated and desperately needs to be completely redone. I would recommend looking elsewhere for cleanliness. read more

Yup, one star. Not sure where to start but probably easier to just list the problems with our one night stay: 1. Rooms were nicely decorated with adequate space, but not clean. Carpet was dirty, bathtub had scum and backed up when taking a shower. 2. No coffee maker- I called for one, they delivered a dirty pot! Of course, they replaced it with a clean one- but no apology. 3. Linens were quite worn and pillows were, well, not quite fresh. Located in the heart of a college town, this is a place for college kids for sure. As a frequent business traveler, it did not meet my needs or standards. Got this room for $60 on Priceline. The 4 stars are for the hotel and definitely not the area. Ladies don't go out alone! For $60 bucks we got a beautiful room tucked in the corner of the first floor in the mayflower building. We were allowed to check in at 11 am when we arrived in Syracuse. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was large and nicely decorated. The desk staff was friendly. I used the gym which was clean a few of the machines probably needed replacing but most were usable and they had a lot of variety. Parking was free and close to the hotel which I appreciated. read more

I travel to Syracuse three times a year and stay at either The Genesee Grand or The Sheraton. The Genesee's spectacular customer service, great location, and well kept rooms keeps me coming back to them. This evening they officially have my business going forward. I let the front desk know that I need to be up til the crack of dawn studying. Within 3 minutes someone was at my door with a coffee maker and packets of coffee. Well played Genesee. Really old converted apartment building. I asked to me in main building and was told no. Had to walk outside to get to lobby. Tiny room. Very awkward room layout. Old tub. Old and tired looking sitting chair. Felt like was in a old apartment. Cleaning person left cart and garbage bag in front of my door and had a hard time getting out. Never staying here again. Better off staying off campus and more updated and spacious hotel. read more

Stayed here in late December 2013 for a Syracuse-Villanova basketball game. Had the option of staying at the Sheraton for a few bucks more, but in case they're sold out in the future, it'd be great to have a backup plan. Well, that went down the drain with this stay. Got a pretty good rate on Priceline.com and when I got there, I was ok with the location, about 1/2 mile walk to campus and the dome, and the lobby looks great. That's where the flattery ends. Got to our room and it was as if I was in a Holiday Inn circa 1982. The room ambience left a lot to be desired, but at least I didn't pay a premium. My nephew and I crammed into the small room and the beds were ok...full size, not even queens. But at least I didn't pay a premium. Then after a great game and time at the old Carousel Mall (forget what they call it now), we got back to the room and around 11pm started hearing clanking sounds. Apparantly, the heating system adjacent to our room started to clank, clank, clank at an unbearable rate. I called downstairs after a while (thinking it'd go away) and was informed engineering was gone for the night and there were no other rooms to put us in! Ugh. 30 more minutes passed and I tried to fall asleep after a long 4-hour drive up, a great game and 3 hours at the mall....but to no avail. Now past midnight and I physically walked downstairs to the front desk clerk who finally was able to find us a room. While lugging our stuff across to the other side of the hotel, I stopped by the front desk again to see if at least they can comp us breakfast. Gent at the front desk said, shouldn't be a problem and to have a good night. Had a nice room service breakfast and started to feel 'at least they made it up to us'....until I checked out and the front desk person said she saw the notes from the night before and to call back that afternoon to speak with the hotel manager who wouldn't be in until 2pm....I did....she still wasn't in. I called the next day, left a message, still no return call. Called two days later, still no return call. Noticed my credit card charged even after I was informed it would not be! Really? Still trying to sort it out with the hotel yet NO ONE will call me back!!! Claimed they were opening up another hotel somewhere and the GM, Hotel Manager and apparantly anyone with authority to comp some eggs and bacon, was involved in this grand hotel opening. Finally disputing the charge with my credit card. Buyer beware. Doubt you'll have such an issue, but geez if you do, forget about customer service. Only reason it gets one star is because I can't give it a zero...but then again, the free newspaper I guess is worth 1 star, plus Syracuse did knock off Nova. Sheraton next time or back at Carrier Circle. They have a sister hotel near the hospital you may want to steer clear of as well. read more

EASTER BRUNCH WAS AWFUL! Please save yourself from eating here for any buffet brunch!! There was not nearly enough staff working to accomodate the number of diners present. There was a constant shortage of everything: coffee mugs, COFFEE, plates ect. Want a cup of coffee? Wait here 15 minutes for a mug. You're ready to hit the buffet? Get in this line to wait for a plate. So you've got your coffee mug and ready for a second cup of coffee? Wait in this line for 20 minutes while we brew some more. Also, the buffet available was NOT the menu that was advertised and the food that WAS available was of very poor quality. Getting over the fact that for $40/person we had to fetch our own coffee, the mimosas were horrid, worse than any other champagne/mimosa we've EVER had. But we only could order one because our waiter was non-existent. But of course the gratuity was already included in the bill so the servers didn't really have to worry about actually "serving" their guests. You'd be better off avoiding this place completely. read more

3.5 is a fair number of stats for this hotel. I am giving 4 since there is no option of 3.5 and also because we got a good deal of $85 incl taxes through Priceline. We got one of their basic rooms with two double beds. The room, bed sheets and towels very clean, the bathroom was really small with a tiny sink. Staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel lobby clean and nicely decorated. The had a few events going on the evening we arrived and the parking was almost full, the only avaiable spots were at the farthest distance from the entrance. I would stay here again. read more

Front Desk Staff two incompetent, unprofessional, lowbrow girls. They run the wrong cards for the wrong reservations. Have no listening or comprehension ability. Spoke to me like I was one of their friends after they ran my card for the wrong amount and a different reservation. Girl #1. Ran my card for 3x the amount and then when my alert from my bank popped up and I was baffled why she would do that. She came back and said girl #2 would "have to deal with me". After all of their blunders and lack of hospitality they threatened to cancel my reservation and told me I would need to leave. Never an apology for charging my card 3x the amount. Still waiting to be checked in because they can't find my reservation. MAKE SURE YOU CONFIRM WITH THESE 2 YOUNG GIRLS WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND CHARGING YOUR CARD FOR BEFORE YOU GIVE IT TO THEM. read more

A few months ago, a coworker and I ate at the restaurant and was very impressed with the food and the hotel lobby. Perhaps the food wasn't great, but the weather was awesome and we had a nice dinner on their deck overlooking a very busy street. A few weeks later, every hotel in Syracuse seemed to be sold out, except the Genessee. I'm a regular visitor to Syracuse and have stayed at the Hawthorn, Sheraton, Marx, Hampton, and Embassy Suites. While my room was rather small and pathetic, it was clean and inexpensive. The hotel seems to have gone under a major rennovation, but that money seems to have been spent on the public spaces. Emily, I've stayed at the hotel next to the Syracuse airport, and I would still say that the Genesee is much better. Though not as good as it appears to be from the ads with the ladies enjoying some drinks. The hotel location is really strange - the surrounding area is borderline ghetto. read more

I was very surprised to see that this is only a 3 star hotel. It is incredibly classy, and has the feel of a strong 4 star hotel. My husband and I stayed for 2 nights, and my mother had a room for two nights also. We all really enjoyed our stay. The rooms are recently renovated and very clean. The staff were friendly. The bar was classy and the bartender was skilled. The restaurant was ok...the menu could use some change, but that won't stop me from giving this hotel a 5 star review. Pet friendly, with a small fee. Free wifi. Will definitely stay again if/when in the Syracuse area. read more

I found this hotel on Priceline for a decent $60 after taxes etc. Given the area - I guess it's "4 stars" but I wouldn't say it's luxury. But I was totally happy. Everything is clean and fine, the staff was responsive, beds comfy and bathrooms like-new. The tv seems to have a of of channels and the bar (the only thing going in the area except for Phoebe's which I heard was great, but it's closed Monday nights...) was reasonable and the wine list surprisingly substantial. The neighborhood on the other hand - yikes. Don't walk around. Parking was free which was nice though. No complaints, but I wouldn't agree with Priceline's exaggerated "4star" rating. A Hilton is 4 stars and offers a lot more in the way of luxury, amenities and extras, but at least at The Genesee, these things are free. I don't know much about Syracuse, but if the urban decay is any indication, this place seems wonderful for the money and you can stay isolated from your, err, surroundings. And check out Phoebe's Restaurant down the block. read more

OLD OLD OLD hotel! This place is in dire need of renovations. Paint chipping off the walls, the carpet coming off the floor, and the toilet in my room had a leak. The quality of my room feels as though I should be paying $50 bucks a night, definitely not worth $150 a night. Oh, and the walls are extremely thin. If someone is outside their room talking, it feels as though they're standing right next to you. The only thing positive I can say is the restaurant is actually decent. The food is better than some of the local restaurants within walking distant. Overall, I wouldn't stay here again. This place is too expensive and the hotel looked as though nothing has been changed since the 80's. I'm not sure why some would qualify this hotel as "Fancy," because it's far from. If your looking for an overly priced old hotel with decent food, then this is your spot. read more

I laugh because this hotel claims to be "luxurious." Well, the bed was so uncomfortable we had aches and pains, there was no fridge, no coffee machine, the toilet barely flushed, the sink barely drizzled water- the AC sounded like a rocket launcher with little temp control, the same bowl of French onion soup from the next room sat in the hallway for a good two days- tried to make a reservation at the restaurant downstairs but the hostess was so huffy while answering my question "is there a long wait currently?" Forget it- we went elsewhere. Long story short- the pics of the hotel are deceiving- the inside is outdated and the staff are downright rude. We won't be returning. read more

I booked a reservation for the Genesee Grand Hotel online for $129 dollars. I wasn't expecting much, but when pulling up to the hotel I was pleasantly surprised by how "grand" it actually is! The hotel lobby was beautiful and clean. The hotel staff at the front desk were very polite and even asked me how my trip in was. The check in process was very quick and painless and the young lady at the desk even gave us a room close to the rear exit because it was more accommodating (we had brought our two dogs). There was a pet fee of $50 but I was expecting that and honestly was expecting to pay more but I think the fee was reasonable. The room we stayed in was on the first floor off the lobby. The room was a little smaller than I would have expected but size shouldn't matter in a hotel room (it's really just a place to sleep anyway). The area around the hotel is right near the Syracuse campus so there were plenty of places to eat. All in all, we had a nice quiet evening and would definitely stay again! read more
